Posture Recognition Using the Interdistances Between Wearable Devices
Recognition of user's postures and activities is particularly important, as it allows applications to customize their operations according to the current situation. The vast majority of available solutions are based on wearable devices equipped with accelerometers and gyroscopes. In this article, a different approach is explored: The posture of the user is inferred from the interdistances between the set of devices worn by the user. Interdistances are first measured by using ultra-wideband transceivers operating in two-way ranging mode and then provided as input to a classifier that estimates current posture. An experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method is effective (up to ∼98.2% accuracy), especially when using a personalized model. The method could be used to enhance the accuracy of activity recognition systems based on inertial sensors
Clutter removal of near-field UWB SAR imaging for pipeline penetrating radar
Recently, ultrawideband (UWB) near-field synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging has been proposed for pipeline penetrating radar applications thanks to its capability in providing suitable resolution and penetration depth. Because of geometrical restrictions, there are many complicated sources of clutter in the pipe. However, this issue has not been investigated yet. In this article, we investigate some well-known clutter removal algorithms
using full-wave simulated data and compare their results considering
image quality, signal to clutter ratio and contrast. Among candidate algorithms, two-dimensional singular spectrum analysis (2-D SSA) shows a good potential to improve the signal to clutter ratio. However, basic 2-D SSA produces some artifacts in the image. Therefore, to mitigate this issue, we propose “modified 2-D SSA.” After developing the suitable clutter removal algorithm, wepropose a complete algorithm chain for pipeline imaging. and automatic positioner are implemented and the image of drilled
perforations in a concrete pipe mimicking oil well structure as a case
study is reconstructed to test the proposed algorithm. Compared to
the literature, a comprehensive near-field SAR imaging algorithm
including new clutter removal is proposed and its performance is
verified by obtaining high-quality images in experimental results
Remote Human Vital Sign Monitoring Using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Radar at Millimeter-Wave Frequencies
Non-contact respiration rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) monitoring using millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars has gained lots of attention for medical, civilian, and military applications. These mmWave radars are small, light, and portable which can be deployed to various places. To increase the accuracy of RR and HR detection, distributed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar can be used to acquire non-redundant information of vital sign signals from different perspectives because each MIMO channel has different fields of view with respect to the subject under test (SUT). This dissertation investigates the use of a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar operating at 77-81 GHz for this application. Vital sign signal is first reconstructed with Arctangent Demodulation (AD) method using phase change’s information collected by the radar due to chest wall displacement from respiration and heartbeat activities. Since the heartbeat signals can be corrupted and concealed by the third/fourth harmonics of the respiratory signals as well as random body motion (RBM) from the SUT, we have developed an automatic Heartbeat Template (HBT) extraction method based on Constellation Diagrams of the received signals. The extraction method will automatically spot and extract signals’ portions that carry good amount of heartbeat signals which are not corrupted by the RBM. The extracted HBT is then used as an adapted wavelet for Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) to reduce interferences from respiratory harmonics and RBM, as well as magnify the heartbeat signals. As the nature of RBM is unpredictable, the extracted HBT may not completely cancel the interferences from RBM. Therefore, to provide better HR detection’s accuracy, we have also developed a spectral-based HR selection method to gather frequency spectra of heartbeat signals from different MIMO channels. Based on this gathered spectral information, we can determine an accurate HR even if the heartbeat signals are significantly concealed by the RBM. To further improve the detection’s accuracy of RR and HR, two deep learning (DL) frameworks are also investigated. First, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been proposed to optimally select clean MIMO channels and eliminate MIMO channels with low SNR of heartbeat signals. After that, a Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN) is utilized to reconstruct the heartbeat signals that will be used to assess and select the final HR with high confidence
Autonomous navigation of robotic units in mobile sensor network
This work is motivated by the problem of detecting buried anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in roads or some border regions. The problem is tried to be solved by use of small mobile robotic sensors and their some abilities such as measurement of local fields, navigation around a region, communications with each other, and constituting team within a mission area. The aim of this work is to investigate the navigation problem for the team behavior of mobile sensors within a potential field available in a small-scale environment such as an indoor area or an outdoor region. The mobile sensor network here is a collection of robotic units with sensing capability of earth magnetic field anomalies. A new kind of positioning system is needed for their collective behavior. In this work, a new method of navigation is proposed as a local positioning system. It utilizes ultrasound and radio frequency information to determine the coordinates of the points inside the operational area. The method proposed here is compared with the ultra wideband ranging ping-pong method that is used widely in recent applications. A time division multiple access method is used for the communications among the mobile sensors. The results on the positioning methods together with several simulations and experimental works are given. It is shown that the positioning method utilizing ultrasound-radio frequency method can give fairly good results. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
IoT Platform for COVID-19 Prevention and Control: A Survey
As a result of the worldwide transmission of severe acute respiratory
syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has
evolved into an unprecedented pandemic. Currently, with unavailable
pharmaceutical treatments and vaccines, this novel coronavirus results in a
great impact on public health, human society, and global economy, which is
likely to last for many years. One of the lessons learned from the COVID-19
pandemic is that a long-term system with non-pharmaceutical interventions for
preventing and controlling new infectious diseases is desirable to be
implemented. Internet of things (IoT) platform is preferred to be utilized to
achieve this goal, due to its ubiquitous sensing ability and seamless
connectivity. IoT technology is changing our lives through smart healthcare,
smart home, and smart city, which aims to build a more convenient and
intelligent community. This paper presents how the IoT could be incorporated
into the epidemic prevention and control system. Specifically, we demonstrate a
potential fog-cloud combined IoT platform that can be used in the systematic
and intelligent COVID-19 prevention and control, which involves five
interventions including COVID-19 Symptom Diagnosis, Quarantine Monitoring,
Contact Tracing & Social Distancing, COVID-19 Outbreak Forecasting, and
SARS-CoV-2 Mutation Tracking. We investigate and review the state-of-the-art
literatures of these five interventions to present the capabilities of IoT in
countering against the current COVID-19 pandemic or future infectious disease

Learning to Detect Open Carry and Concealed Object with 77GHz Radar
Detecting harmful carried objects plays a key role in intelligent
surveillance systems and has widespread applications, for example, in airport
security. In this paper, we focus on the relatively unexplored area of using
low-cost 77GHz mmWave radar for the carried objects detection problem. The
proposed system is capable of real-time detecting three classes of objects -
laptop, phone, and knife - under open carry and concealed cases where objects
are hidden with clothes or bags. This capability is achieved by the initial
signal processing for localization and generating range-azimuth-elevation image
cubes, followed by a deep learning-based prediction network and a multi-shot
post-processing module for detecting objects. Extensive experiments for
validating the system performance on detecting open carry and concealed objects
have been presented with a self-built radar-camera testbed and collected
dataset. Additionally, the influence of different input formats, factors, and
parameters on system performance is analyzed, providing an intuitive
understanding of the system. This system would be the very first baseline for
other future works aiming to detect carried objects using 77GHz radar.Comment: 12 page
Investigating Key Techniques to Leverage the Functionality of Ground/Wall Penetrating Radar
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been extensively utilized as a highly efficient and non-destructive testing method for infrastructure evaluation, such as highway rebar detection, bridge decks inspection, asphalt pavement monitoring, underground pipe leakage detection, railroad ballast assessment, etc. The focus of this dissertation is to investigate the key techniques to tackle with GPR signal processing from three perspectives: (1) Removing or suppressing the radar clutter signal; (2) Detecting the underground target or the region of interest (RoI) in the GPR image; (3) Imaging the underground target to eliminate or alleviate the feature distortion and reconstructing the shape of the target with good fidelity.
In the first part of this dissertation, a low-rank and sparse representation based approach is designed to remove the clutter produced by rough ground surface reflection for impulse radar. In the second part, Hilbert Transform and 2-D Renyi entropy based statistical analysis is explored to improve RoI detection efficiency and to reduce the computational cost for more sophisticated data post-processing. In the third part, a back-projection imaging algorithm is designed for both ground-coupled and air-coupled multistatic GPR configurations. Since the refraction phenomenon at the air-ground interface is considered and the spatial offsets between the transceiver antennas are compensated in this algorithm, the data points collected by receiver antennas in time domain can be accurately mapped back to the spatial domain and the targets can be imaged in the scene space under testing. Experimental results validate that the proposed three-stage cascade signal processing methodologies can improve the performance of GPR system
