A temporally adaptive hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for time-dependent compressible flows

The potential of the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method has been recognized for the computation of stationary flows. Extending the method to time-dependent problems can, e.g., be done by backward difference formulae (BDF) or diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) methods. In this work, we investigate the use of embedded DIRK methods in an HDG solver, including the use of adaptive time-step control. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of the method for both linear and nonlinear (systems of) time-dependent convection-diffusion equations

A numerical study of radial basis function based methods for option pricing under one dimension jump-diffusion model

The aim of this paper is to show how option prices in the Jump-diffusion model can be computed using meshless methods based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation. The RBF technique is demonstrated by solving the partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) in one-dimension for the Ameri- can put and the European vanilla call/put options on dividend-paying stocks in the Merton and Kou Jump-diffusion models. The radial basis function we select is the Cubic Spline. We also propose a simple numerical algorithm for finding a finite computational range of a global integral term in the PIDE so that the accuracy of approximation of the integral can be improved. Moreover, the solution functions of the PIDE are approximated explicitly by RBFs which have exact forms so we can easily compute the global intergal by any kind of numerical quadrature. Finally, we will also show numerically that our scheme is second order accurate in spatial variables in both American and European cases

An adaptive, fully implicit multigrid phase-field model for the quantitative simulation of non-isothermal binary alloy solidification

Using state-of-the-art numerical techniques, such as mesh adaptivity, implicit time-stepping and a non-linear multi-grid solver, the phase-field equations for the non-isothermal solidification of a dilute binary alloy have been solved. Using the quantitative, thin-interface formulation of the problem we have found that at high Lewis number a minimum in the dendrite tip radius is predicted with increasing undercooling, as predicted by marginal stability theory. Over the dimensionless undercooling range 0.2–0.8 the radius selection parameter, σ*, was observed to vary by over a factor of 2 and in a non-monotonic fashion, despite the anisotropy strength being constant

A conservative implicit multirate method for hyperbolic problems

This work focuses on the development of a self adjusting multirate strategy based on an implicit time discretization for the numerical solution of hyperbolic equations, that could benefit from different time steps in different areas of the spatial domain. We propose a novel mass conservative multirate approach, that can be generalized to various implicit time discretization methods. It is based on flux partitioning, so that flux exchanges between a cell and its neighbors are balanced. A number of numerical experiments on both non-linear scalar problems and systems of hyperbolic equations have been carried out to test the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach

Extrapolation-Based Implicit-Explicit Peer Methods with Optimised Stability Regions

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate a new class of implicit-explicit (IMEX) two-step methods of Peer type for systems of ordinary differential equations with both non-stiff and stiff parts included in the source term. An extrapolation approach based on already computed stage values is applied to construct IMEX methods with favourable stability properties. Optimised IMEX-Peer methods of order p = 2, 3, 4, are given as result of a search algorithm carefully designed to balance the size of the stability regions and the extrapolation errors. Numerical experiments and a comparison to other implicit-explicit methods are included.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
