    Analysis of Intermittent Distributed Connectivity in Urban Areas

    Analysis of hypothetical connectivity of wirelessly interconnected networks and infrastructures deployed over a one-square kilometre of the Brussels Metropolitan area is presented. Upper and lower margins of wireless transceiver range are considered with a view to characterise representative interconnectivity profiles. Graph and percolation analyses of intermittent connectivity and its implications for resilience and vulnerability of the network are discussed. Based on these findings the report presents a proposal for the dimensioning of connectivity profiles for generic areas based on intrinsic algebraic network properties.JRC.E.4-Safety and Security of Building

    Random access MAC protocols and system monitoring methodology in wireless mesh networks.

    As an extension of wireless Ad Hoc 1 and sensor 2 networks, wireless mesh networks (WMN) 3 have recently been developed as a key solution to provide high-quality multimedia services and applications, such as voice, data and video, over wireless personal area networks (WPAN) 4, wireless local area network (WXAN) 5 and wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) 6. A WMN usually has a hierarchical network infrastructure with backbone and access networks operated in both Ad Hoc and centralized modes with self-organization and self-configuration capabilities. Along with flexibilities, WMN brings several problems and requirements at the same time. In this thesis, problems and challenges such as packet collisions, interference and security issues are initialized discussed with existing solutions reviewed. After that, three innovative random access MAC protocols are proposed for wireless mesh access networks with comprehensive analysis and discussion followed. Moreover, in order to detect misbehaviors of wireless terminals and abnormal performance of applications, the network traffic flow concept in wired IP network is extended to WMN with "Meshflow" defined. Based on this new concept, a comprehensive framework is designed for wireless mesh backbone network to monitor users, routers, applications and services so as to achieve abnormal or intrusion detection, malicious user identification and traceback

    The history of WiMAX: a complete survey of the evolution in certification and standarization for IEEE 802.16 and WiMAX

    Most researchers are familiar with the technical features of WiMAX technology but the evolution that WiMAX went through, in terms of standardization and certification, is missing and unknown to most people. Knowledge of this historical process would however aid to understand how WiMAX has become the widespread technology that it is today. Furthermore, it would give insight in the steps to undertake for anyone aiming at introducing a new wireless technology on a worldwide scale. Therefore, this article presents a survey on all relevant activities that took place within three important organizations: the 802.16 Working Group of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for technology development and standardization, the WiMAX Forum for product certification and the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) for international recognition. An elaborated and comprehensive overview of all those activities is given, which reveals the importance of the willingness to innovate and to continuously incorporate new ideas in the IEEE standardization process and the importance of the WiMAX Forum certification label granting process to ensure interoperability. We also emphasize the steps that were taken in cooperating with the ITU to improve the international esteem of the technology. Finally, a WiMAX trend analysis is made. We showed how industry interest has fluctuated over time and quantified the evolution in WiMAX product certification and deployments. It is shown that most interest went to the 2.5 GHz and 3.5GHz frequencies, that most deployments are in geographic regions with a lot of developing countries and that the highest people coverage is achieved in Asia Pacific. This elaborated description of all standardization and certification activities, from the very start up to now, will make the reader comprehend how past and future steps are taken in the development process of new WiMAX features

    Performance analysis and application development of hybrid WiMAX-WiFi IP video surveillance systems

    Traditional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) analogue cameras installed in buildings and other areas of security interest necessitates the use of cable lines. However, analogue systems are limited by distance; and storing analogue data requires huge space or bandwidth. Wired systems are also prone to vandalism, they cannot be installed in a hostile terrain and in heritage sites, where cabling would distort original design. Currently, there is a paradigm shift towards wireless solutions (WiMAX, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G) to complement and in some cases replace the wired system. A wireless solution of the Fourth-Generation Surveillance System (4GSS) has been proposed in this thesis. It is a hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance system. The performance analysis of the hybrid WiMAX-WiFi is compared with the conventional WiMAX surveillance models. The video surveillance models and the algorithm that exploit the advantages of both WiMAX and Wi-Fi for scenarios of fixed and mobile wireless cameras have been proposed, simulated and compared with the mathematical/analytical models. The hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance model has been extended to include a Wireless Mesh configuration on the Wi-Fi part, to improve the scalability and reliability. A performance analysis for hybrid WiMAX-WiFi system with an appropriate Mobility model has been considered for the case of mobile cameras. A security software application for mobile smartphones that sends surveillance images to either local or remote servers has been developed. The developed software has been tested, evaluated and deployed in low bandwidth Wi-Fi wireless network environments. WiMAX is a wireless metropolitan access network technology that provides broadband services to the connected customers. Major modules and units of WiMAX include the Customer Provided Equipment (CPE), the Access Service Network (ASN) which consist one or more Base Stations (BS) and the Connectivity Service Network (CSN). Various interfaces exist between each unit and module. WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 family of standards. Wi-Fi, on the other hand, is a wireless access network operating in the local area network; and it is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards

    Managing Wireless Networks in the Healthcare Sector: Emerging Experiences of Cultural Impacts

    The existing body of knowledge has generally supported that organizational culture plays a significant role in shaping group identity, work pattern, communication schemes, and interpersonal relations; all of these cultural elements are important organizational factors that shape workplaces and operational routines. In the context of emerging information technology, it has also been suggested that organizational culture could affect IT implementation and management. However, little is known about how emerging information technology shapes organizational culture, which in turn helps reshape the organization as a whole. The purpose of this paper is thus to build empirical understanding of how IT in general and emerging wireless networks in particular reshapes organizational culture. Case studies conducted in two hospitals situated in southwest U.S.A. illustrated that the implementation of wireless networks indeed helped shape and/or reshape organizational culture in the healthcare sector and in turn enhance healthcare organizations’ competitiveness in the marketplace. For IT managers and practitioners in healthcare institutions, effective strategy to plan and manage emerging ITs such as wireless networks will thus have long-term implications on cultivating organizational culture that could eventually reshape workplace and competitiveness
