Energy-efficient wireless communication
In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters
Throughput of ADSL modems
This paper considers the throughput of ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) modems, used for high-speed data transmission over relatively unreliable connections, e.g. copper telephone wires. The modem technique uses an error correcting code and interleaving. The settings include a grouping factor which affects the amount of data per code word, the number of redundant bytes per code word and the interleave depth . The influence of these parameters on both the effective data transmission rate and the resulting error rate in the received signal are determined for two error situations: random errors and bursts of errors. An approximate analysis for the random error case of the throughput of a TCP (Transport Control Protocol) connection using an ADSL modem shows that maximum throughput is obtained for the highest values of and
Evaluation of cross-layer reliability mechanisms for satellite digital multimedia broadcast
This paper presents a study of some reliability mechanisms which may be put at work in the context of Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (SDMB) to mobile devices such as handheld phones. These mechanisms include error correcting codes, interleaving at the physical layer, erasure codes at
intermediate layers and error concealment on the video decoder. The evaluation is made on a realistic satellite channel and takes into account practical constraints such as the maximum zapping time and the user mobility at several speeds. The evaluation is done by simulating different scenarii with complete protocol stacks. The simulations indicate that, under the assumptions taken here, the scenario using highly compressed video protected by erasure codes at intermediate layers seems to be the best solution

Unequal Error Protected JPEG 2000 Broadcast Scheme with Progressive Fountain Codes
This paper proposes a novel scheme, based on progressive fountain codes, for
broadcasting JPEG 2000 multimedia. In such a broadcast scheme, progressive
resolution levels of images/video have been unequally protected when
transmitted using the proposed progressive fountain codes. With progressive
fountain codes applied in the broadcast scheme, the resolutions of images (JPEG
2000) or videos (MJPEG 2000) received by different users can be automatically
adaptive to their channel qualities, i.e. the users with good channel qualities
are possible to receive the high resolution images/vedio while the users with
bad channel qualities may receive low resolution images/vedio. Finally, the
performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated with the MJPEG 2000 broadcast
prototype
Reliable Video Streaming over mmWave with Multi Connectivity and Network Coding
The next generation of multimedia applications will require the
telecommunication networks to support a higher bitrate than today, in order to
deliver virtual reality and ultra-high quality video content to the users. Most
of the video content will be accessed from mobile devices, prompting the
provision of very high data rates by next generation (5G) cellular networks. A
possible enabler in this regard is communication at mmWave frequencies, given
the vast amount of available spectrum that can be allocated to mobile users;
however, the harsh propagation environment at such high frequencies makes it
hard to provide a reliable service. This paper presents a reliable video
streaming architecture for mmWave networks, based on multi connectivity and
network coding, and evaluates its performance using a novel combination of the
ns-3 mmWave module, real video traces and the network coding library Kodo. The
results show that it is indeed possible to reliably stream video over cellular
mmWave links, while the combination of multi connectivity and network coding
can support high video quality with low latency.Comment: To be presented at the 2018 IEEE International Conference on
