    EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON QUEUEING THEORY 2016

    International audienceThis booklet contains the proceedings of the second European Conference in Queueing Theory (ECQT) that was held from the 18th to the 20th of July 2016 at the engineering school ENSEEIHT, Toulouse, France. ECQT is a biannual event where scientists and technicians in queueing theory and related areas get together to promote research, encourage interaction and exchange ideas. The spirit of the conference is to be a queueing event organized from within Europe, but open to participants from all over the world. The technical program of the 2016 edition consisted of 112 presentations organized in 29 sessions covering all trends in queueing theory, including the development of the theory, methodology advances, computational aspects and applications. Another exciting feature of ECQT2016 was the institution of the Takács Award for outstanding PhD thesis on "Queueing Theory and its Applications"

    A Continuous Review inventory Control Model within Batch Arrival Queuing Framework: A Parameter-Tuned Imperialist Competitive Algorithm

    In this paper, a multi-product continues review inventory control problem within batch arrival queuing approach (MQr/M/1) is modeled to find the optimal quantities of maximum inventory. The objective function is to minimize summation of ordering, holding and shortage costs under warehouse space, service level, and expected lost-sales shortage cost constraints from retailer and warehouse viewpoints. Since the proposed model is Np-Hard, an efficient imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is proposed to solve the model. To justify proposed ICA, a simulated annealing algorithm has been utilized. In order to determine the best value of algorithms parameters that result in a better solution, a fine-tuning procedure is executed. Finally, the performance of the proposed ICA is analyzed using some numerical illustrations

    Stochastic and Optimal Distributed Control for Energy Optimization and Spatially Invariant Systems

    Improving energy efficiency and grid responsiveness of buildings requires sensing, computing and communication to enable stochastic decision-making and distributed operations. Optimal control synthesis plays a significant role in dealing with the complexity and uncertainty associated with the energy systems. The dissertation studies general area of complex networked systems that consist of interconnected components and usually operate in uncertain environments. Specifically, the contents of this dissertation include tools using stochastic and optimal distributed control to overcome these challenges and improve the sustainability of electric energy systems. The first tool is developed as a unifying stochastic control approach for improving energy efficiency while meeting probabilistic constraints. This algorithm is applied to demonstrate energy efficiency improvement in buildings and improving operational efficiency of virtualized web servers, respectively. Although all the optimization in this technique is in the form of convex optimization, it heavily relies on semidefinite programming (SP). A generic SP solver can handle only up to hundreds of variables. This being said, for a large scale system, the existing off-the-shelf algorithms may not be an appropriate tool for optimal control. Therefore, in the sequel I will exploit optimization in a distributed way. The second tool is itself a concrete study which is optimal distributed control for spatially invariant systems. Spatially invariance means the dynamics of the system do not vary as we translate along some spatial axis. The optimal H2 [H-2] decentralized control problem is solved by computing an orthogonal projection on a class of Youla parameters with a decentralized structure. Optimal H∞ [H-infinity] performance is posed as a distance minimization in a general L∞ [L-infinity] space from a vector function to a subspace with a mixed L∞ and H∞ space structure. In this framework, the dual and pre-dual formulations lead to finite dimensional convex optimizations which approximate the optimal solution within desired accuracy. Furthermore, a mixed L2 [L-2] /H∞ synthesis problem for spatially invariant systems as trade-offs between transient performance and robustness. Finally, we pursue to deal with a more general networked system, i.e. the Non-Markovian decentralized stochastic control problem, using stochastic maximum principle via Malliavin Calculus

    Concurrent design for optimal quality and cycle time

In order to assess and optimize the product and manufacturing system design, an objective evaluation framework is needed. Despite the many existing tools for product and manufacturing system design, there is a missing link between the product design and the production performances under system variability. The goal of the thesis is to explore and understand the interactions among part design and tolerancing, processes and system variability, and system control decision, then provide an integrated model to assess the total cost in a system. This model will be used to aid part design, tolerancing, batching, as well as strategy analysis in process improvement. A two-stage modeling approach is used to tackle the problem: quality prediction and production prediction. The quality prediction model projects the process variations into the output quality variations at each manufacturing stage, then predict the yield rate from the stochastic behavior of the variations and the tolerance. The production prediction model projects the demand rate and variability, processing times and variability, yield rates and batch-sizes into the manufacturing cycle time and inventories. After the performances are predicted through the previous two models, concurrent optimization of part design, tolerance, and batch-sizes are achieved by varying them to find the minimum cost. A case study at Boeing Tube shop is used to illustrate this approach. The result shows that the costless decisions in part design, tolerancing, and batch- sizes can significantly improve the system performance.     The impact of Information Technology (IT) on the financial performance of organizations in a developing country

    Bibliography: pages 84-90.The effect of IT investment on the risk and risk profile of managers were studied in the IT-using industry in Namibia. IT investment uses certain of an organization's resources. The following models (computerization index (CI), IT expense ratio (ITEX) , IT costs efficiency ratio (ITCE), operating cost efficiency ratio (OPEX), operating leverage, cost-benefit ratio, return on IT assets ratio and profitability performance measurements in terms of six strategic ratios; profit/total assets, profit/turnover, turnover/total assets, gross margin/turnover, profit growth rate and sales growth rate) were used. The study also established the importance of perceived risk in any organization's and managers' daily activities. The study further investigated the close link between calculated organizational risk and IT investment decisions. The results displayed a positive association between the CI and turnover growth. A link was shown between ITEX and OPEX and OPEX and the monetary value of IT, allowing the study to accept these two hypotheses. It was thus concluded that CI and ITEX could be used as a possible measurement of computerization. On the other hand, managerial perceived and calculated organizational risk were not found to be the deciding factors while an IT investment was being made

    A Framework for Industry 4.0

    The potential of the Industry 4.0 will allow the national industry to develop all kinds of procedures, especially in terms of competitive differentiation. The prospects and motivations behind Industry 4.0 are related to the management that is essentially geared towards industrial internet, to the integrated analysis and use of data, to the digitalization of products and services, to new disruptive business models and to the cooperation within the value chain. It is through the integration of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), into the maintenance process that it is possible to carry out a continuous monitoring of industrial machines, as well as to apply advanced techniques for predictive and proactive maintenance. The present work is based on the MANTIS project, aiming to construct a specific platform for the proactive maintenance of industrial machines, targeting particularly the case of GreenBender ADIRA Steel Sheet. In other words, the aim is to reduce maintenance costs, increase the efficiency of the process and consequently the profit. Essentially, the MANTIS project is a multinational research project, where the CISTER Research Unit plays a key role, particularly in providing the communications infrastructure for one MANTIS Pilot. The methodology is based on a follow-up study, which is jointly carried with the client, as well as within the scope of the implementation of the ADIRA Pilot. The macro phases that are followed in the present work are: 1) detailed analysis of the business needs; 2) preparation of the architecture specification; 3) implementation/development; 4) tests and validation; 5) support; 6) stabilization; 7) corrective and evolutionary maintenance; and 8) final project analysis and corrective measures to be applied in future projects. The expected results of the development of such project are related to the integration of the industrial maintenance process, to the continuous monitoring of the machines and to the application of advanced techniques of preventive and proactive maintenance of industrial machines, particularly based on techniques and good practices of the Software Engineering area and on the integration of Cyber-Physical Systems.O potencial desenvolvido pela Indústria 4.0 dotará a indústria nacional de capacidades para desenvolver todo o tipo de procedimentos, especialmente a nível da diferenciação competitiva. As perspetivas e as motivações por detrás da Indústria 4.0 estão relacionadas com uma gestão essencialmente direcionada para a internet industrial, com uma análise integrada e utilização de dados, com a digitalização de produtos e de serviços, com novos modelos disruptivos de negócio e com uma cooperação horizontal no âmbito da cadeia de valor. É através da integração dos sistemas ciber-físicos no processo de manutenção que é possível proceder a um monitoramento contínuo das máquinas, tal como à aplicação de técnicas avançadas para a manutenção preditiva e pró-ativa das mesmas. O presente trabalho é baseado no projeto MANTIS, objetivando, portanto, a construção de uma plataforma específica para a manutenção pró-ativa das máquinas industriais, neste caso em concreto das prensas, que serão as máquinas industriais analisadas ao longo do presente trabalho. Dito de um outro modo, objetiva-se, através de uma plataforma em específico, reduzir todos os custos da sua manutenção, aumentando, portanto, os lucros industriais advindos da produção. Resumidamente, o projeto MANTIS consiste num projeto de investigação multinacional, onde a Unidade de Investigação CISTER desenvolve um papel fundamental, particularmente no fornecimento da infraestrutura de comunicação no Piloto MANTIS. A metodologia adotada é baseada num estudo de acompanhamento, realizado em conjunto com o cliente, e no âmbito da implementação do Piloto da ADIRA. As macro fases que são compreendidas por esta metodologia, e as quais serão seguidas, são: 1) análise detalhada das necessidades de negócio; 2) preparação da especificação da arquitetura; 3) implementação/desenvolvimento; 4) testes e validação; 5) suporte; 6) estabilização; 7) manutenção corretiva e evolutiva; e 8) análise final do projeto e medidas corretivas a aplicar em projetos futuros. Os resultados esperados com o desenvolvimento do projeto estão relacionados com a integração do processo de manutenção industrial, a monitorização contínua das máquinas e a aplicação de técnicas avançadas de manutenção preventiva e pós-ativa das máquinas, especialmente com base em técnicas e boas práticas da área de Engenharia de Software
