    A LightGBM-Based EEG Analysis Method for Driver Mental States Classification

    Fatigue driving can easily lead to road traffic accidents and bring great harm to individuals and families. Recently, electroencephalography- (EEG-) based physiological and brain activities for fatigue detection have been increasingly investigated. However, how to find an effective method or model to timely and efficiently detect the mental states of drivers still remains a challenge. In this paper, we combine common spatial pattern (CSP) and propose a light-weighted classifier, LightFD, which is based on gradient boosting framework for EEG mental states identification. ,e comparable results with traditional classifiers, such as support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neural network (CNN), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and large margin nearest neighbor (LMNN), show that the proposed model could achieve better classification performance, as well as the decision efficiency. Furthermore, we also test and validate that LightFD has better transfer learning performance in EEG classification of driver mental states. In summary, our proposed LightFD classifier has better performance in real-time EEG mental state prediction, and it is expected to have broad application prospects in practical brain-computer interaction (BCI)

    Driver drowsiness classification using fuzzy wavelet-packet-based feature-extraction algorithm

    Driver drowsiness and loss of vigilance are a major cause of road accidents. Monitoring physiological signals while driving provides the possibility of detecting and warning of drowsiness and fatigue. The aim of this paper is to maximize the amount of drowsiness-related information extracted from a set of electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during a simulation driving test. Specifically, we develop an efficient fuzzy mutual-information (MI)- based wavelet packet transform (FMIWPT) feature-extraction method for classifying the driver drowsiness state into one of predefined drowsiness levels. The proposed method estimates the required MI using a novel approach based on fuzzy memberships providing an accurate-information content-estimation measure. The quality of the extracted features was assessed on datasets collected from 31 drivers on a simulation test. The experimental results proved the significance of FMIWPT in extracting features that highly correlate with the different drowsiness levels achieving a classification accuracy of 95%-97% on an average across all subjects. © 2011 IEEE

    A Physiological Signal Processing System for Optimal Engagement and Attention Detection.

    In today’s high paced, hi-tech and high stress environment, with extended work hours, long to-do lists and neglected personal health, sleep deprivation has become common in modern culture. Coupled with these factors is the inherent repetitious and tedious nature of certain occupations and daily routines, which all add up to an undesirable fluctuation in individuals’ cognitive attention and capacity. Given certain critical professions, a momentary or prolonged lapse in attention level can be catastrophic and sometimes deadly. This research proposes to develop a real-time monitoring system which uses fundamental physiological signals such as the Electrocardiograph (ECG), to analyze and predict the presence or lack of cognitive attention in individuals during task execution. The primary focus of this study is to identify the correlation between fluctuating level of attention and its implications on the physiological parameters of the body. The system is designed using only those physiological signals that can be collected easily with small, wearable, portable and non-invasive monitors and thereby being able to predict well in advance, an individual’s potential loss of attention and ingression of sleepiness. Several advanced signal processing techniques have been implemented and investigated to derive multiple clandestine and informative features. These features are then applied to machine learning algorithms to produce classification models that are capable of differentiating between the cases of a person being attentive and the person not being attentive. Furthermore, Electroencephalograph (EEG) signals are also analyzed and classified for use as a benchmark for comparison with ECG analysis. For the study, ECG signals and EEG signals of volunteer subjects are acquired in a controlled experiment. The experiment is designed to inculcate and sustain cognitive attention for a period of time following which an attempt is made to reduce cognitive attention of volunteer subjects. The data acquired during the experiment is decomposed and analyzed for feature extraction and classification. The presented results show that to a fairly reasonable accuracy it is possible to detect the presence or lack of attention in individuals with just their ECG signal, especially in comparison with analysis done on EEG signals. The continual work of this research includes other physiological signals such as Galvanic Skin Response, Heat Flux, Skin Temperature and video based facial feature analysis

    Effects of force load, muscle fatigue and extremely low frequency magnetic stimulation on EEG signals during side arm lateral raise task

    Objective: This study was to quantitatively investigate the effects of force load, muscle fatigue and extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic stimulation on electroencephalography (EEG) signal features during side arm lateral raise task. Approach: EEG signals were recorded by a BIOSEMI Active Two system with Pin-Type active-electrodes from 18 healthy subjects when they performed the right arm side lateral raise task (90° away from the body) with three different loads (0 kg, 1 kg and 3 kg; their order was randomized among the subjects) on the forearm. The arm maintained the loads until the subject felt exhausted. The first 10 s recording for each load was regarded as non-fatigue status and the last 10 s before the subject was exhausted as fatigue status. The subject was then given a 5 min resting between different loads. Two days later, the same experiment was performed on each subject except that ELF magnetic stimulation was applied to the subject's deltoid muscle during the 5 min resting period. EEG features from C3 and C4 electrodes including the power of alpha, beta and gamma and sample entropy were analyzed and compared between different loads, non-fatigue/fatigue status, and with/without ELF magnetic stimulation. Main results: The key results were associated with the change of the power of alpha band. From both C3-EEG and C4-EEG, with 1 kg and 3 kg force loads, the power of alpha band was significantly smaller than that from 0 kg for both non-fatigue and fatigue periods (all p    0.05 for all the force loads except C4-EEG with ELF simulation). The power of alpha band at fatigue status was significantly increased for both C3-EEG and C4-EEG when compared with the non-fatigue status (p    0.05, except between non-fatigue and fatigue with magnetic stimulation in gamma band of C3-EEG at 1 kg, and in the SampEn at 1 kg and 3 kg force loads from C4-EEG). Significance: Our study comprehensively quantified the effects of force, fatigue and the ELF magnetic stimulation on EEG features with difference forces, fatigue status and ELF magnetic stimulation

    Comparing features extractors in EEG-based cognitive fatigue detection of demanding computer tasks

    © 2015 IEEE. An electroencephalography (EEG)-based classification system could be used as a tool for detecting cognitive fatigue from demanding computer tasks. The most widely used feature extractor in EEG-based fatigue classification is power spectral density (PSD). This paper investigates PSD and three alternative feature extraction methods, in order to find the best feature extractor for the classification of cognitive fatigue during cognitively demanding tasks. These compared methods are power spectral entropy (PSE), wavelet, and autoregressive (AR). Bayesian neural network was selected as the classifier in this study. The results showed that the use of PSD and PSE methods provide an average accuracy of 60% for each computer task. This finding is slightly improved using the wavelet method which has an average accuracy of 61%. The AR method is the best feature extractor compared with the PSD, PSE and wavelet in this study with accuracy of 75.95% in AX-continuous performance test (AX-CPT), 75.23% in psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) and 76.02% in Stroop task (p-value < 0.05)

    Classifying Unstable and Stable Walking Patterns Using Electroencephalography Signals and Machine Learning Algorithms

    Analyzing unstable gait patterns from Electroencephalography (EEG) signals is vital to develop real-time brain-computer interface (BCI) systems to prevent falls and associated injuries. This study investigates the feasibility of classification algorithms to detect walking instability utilizing EEG signals. A 64-channel Brain Vision EEG system was used to acquire EEG signals from 13 healthy adults. Participants performed walking trials for four different stable and unstable conditions: (i) normal walking, (ii) normal walking with medial-lateral perturbation (MLP), (iii) normal walking with dual-tasking (Stroop), (iv) normal walking with center of mass visual feedback. Digital biomarkers were extracted using wavelet energy and entropies from the EEG signals. Algorithms like the ChronoNet, SVM, Random Forest, gradient boosting and recurrent neural networks (LSTM) could classify with 67 to 82% accuracy. The classification results show that it is possible to accurately classify different gait patterns (from stable to unstable) using EEG-based digital biomarkers. This study develops various machine-learning-based classification models using EEG datasets with potential applications in detecting unsteady gait neural signals and intervening by preventing falls and injuries

    A systematic review of physiological signals based driver drowsiness detection systems.

    Driving a vehicle is a complex, multidimensional, and potentially risky activity demanding full mobilization and utilization of physiological and cognitive abilities. Drowsiness, often caused by stress, fatigue, and illness declines cognitive capabilities that affect drivers' capability and cause many accidents. Drowsiness-related road accidents are associated with trauma, physical injuries, and fatalities, and often accompany economic loss. Drowsy-related crashes are most common in young people and night shift workers. Real-time and accurate driver drowsiness detection is necessary to bring down the drowsy driving accident rate. Many researchers endeavored for systems to detect drowsiness using different features related to vehicles, and drivers' behavior, as well as, physiological measures. Keeping in view the rising trend in the use of physiological measures, this study presents a comprehensive and systematic review of the recent techniques to detect driver drowsiness using physiological signals. Different sensors augmented with machine learning are utilized which subsequently yield better results. These techniques are analyzed with respect to several aspects such as data collection sensor, environment consideration like controlled or dynamic, experimental set up like real traffic or driving simulators, etc. Similarly, by investigating the type of sensors involved in experiments, this study discusses the advantages and disadvantages of existing studies and points out the research gaps. Perceptions and conceptions are made to provide future research directions for drowsiness detection techniques based on physiological signals.
