Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations
The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded. Using Erlang in Research and Education in a Technical University
This paper addresses the problem of using functional programming (FP) languages for research and education purposes. In order to identify problems associated with usage of FP languages, such as Erlang, an experiment consisting of two surveys was performed. The rst survey was anonymous, and aimed at establishing whether the participants prefer object-oriented or functional coding. The second one was a survey after students have nished an Erlang course. The results of these two surveys demonstrate that functional programming is underrated without apparent reasons. Possible steps to address this problem are suggested
The AFLOW Fleet for Materials Discovery
The traditional paradigm for materials discovery has been recently expanded
to incorporate substantial data driven research. With the intent to accelerate
the development and the deployment of new technologies, the AFLOW Fleet for
computational materials design automates high-throughput first principles
calculations, and provides tools for data verification and dissemination for a
broad community of users. AFLOW incorporates different computational modules to
robustly determine thermodynamic stability, electronic band structures,
vibrational dispersions, thermo-mechanical properties and more. The AFLOW data
repository is publicly accessible online at aflow.org, with more than 1.7
million materials entries and a panoply of queryable computed properties. Tools
to programmatically search and process the data, as well as to perform online

COEL: A Web-based Chemistry Simulation Framework
The chemical reaction network (CRN) is a widely used formalism to describe
macroscopic behavior of chemical systems. Available tools for CRN modelling and
simulation require local access, installation, and often involve local file
storage, which is susceptible to loss, lacks searchable structure, and does not
support concurrency. Furthermore, simulations are often single-threaded, and
user interfaces are non-trivial to use. Therefore there are significant hurdles
to conducting efficient and collaborative chemical research. In this paper, we
introduce a new enterprise chemistry simulation framework, COEL, which
addresses these issues. COEL is the first web-based framework of its kind. A
visually pleasing and intuitive user interface, simulations that run on a large
computational grid, reliable database storage, and transactional services make
COEL ideal for collaborative research and education. COEL's most prominent
features include ODE-based simulations of chemical reaction networks and
multicompartment reaction networks, with rich options for user interactions
with those networks. COEL provides DNA-strand displacement transformations and
visualization (and is to our knowledge the first CRN framework to do so), GA
optimization of rate constants, expression validation, an application-wide
plotting engine, and SBML/Octave/Matlab export. We also present an overview of
the underlying software and technologies employed and describe the main
architectural decisions driving our development. COEL is available at
http://coel-sim.org for selected research teams only. We plan to provide a part

Epistemological Foundations for Neuroeconomics
Neuroeconomics is an emerging field crossing neuroscientific data, the use of brain-imaging tools, experimental and behavioral economics, and an attempt at a better understanding of the cognitive assumptions that underlie theoretical predictive economic models. In this paper the authors try two things: 1) To assess the epistemological biases that affect Neuroeconomics as it is currently done. Charting domains of silence - a description of a process of feminist training addressing the rape of men in prison
The rape of adult males is a subject in need of attention. The rape of men within South African prisons particularly, has been inadequately researched and documented. Investigation is necessary in order to challenge myths which serve to maintain a 'cycle of silence' regarding the male rape, to guide preventative measures, and inform appropriate services. A training programme within Pollsmoor Prison, is described. The initiative addressed the rape of men in prison, upon request of a group of inmates and warders named 'Friends Against Abuse'. This record is a self-reflexive account of a facilitator's experiences of the research and training. It describes a process of reflection and action, its style consistent with the feminist values that informed the work. The methodological blend of Participatory Action Research, Experiential Training, and contributions from psychodynamic thinking, are elaborated. Discussion explores professional and personal challenges to women working within this domain. It raises questions regarding the impact of a feminist agenda on such work and considers issues of sustainability and the impact of similar interventions. Strategies to ensure effective implementation, monitoring and evaluation are suggested, as well as mechanisms to guarantee integrity, such as 'debriefings' and supervision
