    Comparison of intelligent charging algorithms for electric vehicles to reduce peak load and demand variability in a distribution grid

    A potential breakthrough of the electrification of the vehicle fleet will incur a steep rise in the load on the electrical power grid. To avoid huge grid investments, coordinated charging of those vehicles is a must. In this paper, we assess algorithms to schedule charging of plug-in (hybrid) electric vehicles as to minimize the additional peak load they might cause. We first introduce two approaches, one based on a classical optimization approach using quadratic programming, and a second one, market based coordination, which is a multi-agent system that uses bidding on a virtual market to reach an equilibrium, price that matches demand and supply. We benchmark these two methods against each other, as well as to a baseline scenario of uncontrolled charging. Our simulation results covering a residential area with 63 households show that controlled charging reduces peak load, load variability, and deviations from the nominal grid voltage

    Time-optimal Control Strategies for Electric Race Cars with Different Transmission Technologies

    This paper presents models and optimization methods to rapidly compute the achievable lap time of a race car equipped with a battery electric powertrain. Specifically, we first derive a quasi-convex model of the electric powertrain, including the battery, the electric machine, and two transmission technologies: a single-speed fixed gear and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Second, assuming an expert driver, we formulate the time-optimal control problem for a given driving path and solve it using an iterative convex optimization algorithm. Finally, we showcase our framework by comparing the performance achievable with a single-speed transmission and a CVT on the Le Mans track. Our results show that a CVT can balance its lower efficiency and higher weight with a higher-efficiency and more aggressive motor operation, and significantly outperform a fixed single-gear transmission.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to the 2020 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conferenc

    Automated engine calibration of hybrid electric vehicles

    We present a method for automated engine calibration, by optimizing engine management settings and power-split control of a hybrid electric vehicle. The problem, which concerns minimization of fuel consumption under a NOx constraint, is formulated as an optimal control problem. By applying Pontryagin's maximum principle, this study shows that the problem is separable in space. In the case where the limits of battery state of charge are not activated, we show that the optimization problem is also separable in time. The optimal solution is obtained by iteratively solving the power-split control problem using dynamic programming or the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy. In addition, we present a computationally efficient suboptimal solution, which aims at reducing the number of power-split optimizations required.     Hybrid railway vehicle trajectory optimisation using a non‐convex function and evolutionary hybrid forecast algorithm

    AbstractThis paper introduces a novel optimisation algorithm for hybrid railway vehicles, combining a non‐linear programming solver with the highly efficient “Mayfly Algorithm” to address a non‐convex optimisation problem. The primary objective is to generate efficient trajectories that enable effective power distribution, optimal energy consumption, and economical use of multiple onboard power sources. By reducing unnecessary load stress on power sources during peak time, the algorithm contributes to lower maintenance costs, reduced downtime, and extended operational life of these sources. The algorithm's design considers various operational parameters, such as power demand, regenerative braking, velocity and additional power requirements, enabling it to optimise the energy consumption profile throughout the journey. Its adaptability to the unique characteristics of hybrid railway vehicles allows for efficient energy management by leveraging its hybrid powertrain capabilities.</jats:p

    Pontryagin's Minimum Principle based model predictive control of energy management for a plug-in hybrid electric bus

    To improve computational efficiency of energy management strategies for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), this paper proposes a stochastic model predictive controller (MPC) based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP), which differs from widely used dynamic programming (DP)-based predictive methods. First, short-time speed forecasting is achieved using a Markov chain model, based on real-world driving cycles. The PMP- and DP-based MPCs are compared under four preview horizons (5 s, 10 s, 15 s and 20 s), and the results show that the computational time of the DP-MPC is almost four times of that in the PMP-MPC. Moreover, the influence of predication horizon length on computational time and energy consumption is examined. Given a preview horizon of 5 s, the PMP-MPC holds a total energy consumption cost of 7.80 USD and computational time per second of 0.0130 s. When the preview horizon increases to 20 s, the total cost is 7.77 USD with the computational time per second increasing to 0.0502 s. Finally, DP, PMP, and rule-based strategies are contrasted to the PMP-MPC method, further demonstrating the promising performance and computational efficiency of the proposed methodology

    New Energy Management Systems for Battery Electric Vehicles with Supercapacitor

    Recently, the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has been considered to be a proper candidate to terminate the problems associated with fuel-based vehicles. Therefore, the development and enhancement of the BEVs have lately formed an attractive field of study. One of the significant challenges to commercialize BEVs is to overcome the battery drawbacks that limit the BEV’s performance. One promising solution is to hybridize the BEV with a supercapacitor (SC) so that the battery is the primary source of energy meanwhile the SC handles sudden fluctuations in power demand. Obviously, to exploit the most benefits from this hybrid system, an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS) is required. In this thesis, different EMSs are developed: first, the Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) based on Newton Generalized Minimum Residual (Newton/GMRES) method. The NMPC effectively optimizes the power distribution between the battery and supercapacitor as a result of NMPC ability to handle multi-input, multi-output problems and utilize past information to predict future power demand. However, real-time application of the NMPC is challenging due to its huge computational cost. Therefore, Newton/GMRES, which is a fast real-time optimizer, is implemented in the heart of the NMPC. Simulation results demonstrate that the Newton/GMRES NMPC successfully protects the battery during high power peaks and nadirs. On the other hand, future power demand is inherently probabilistic. Consequently, Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) is employed to maximize the battery lifespan while considering the uncertain nature of power demand. The next power demand is predicted by a Markov chain. The SDP approach determines the optimal policy using the policy iteration algorithm. Implementation of the SDP is quite free-to-launch since it does not require any additional equipment. Furthermore, the SDP is an offline approach, thus, computational cost is not an issue. Simulation results are considerable compared to those of other rival approaches. Recent success stories of applying bio-inspired techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to control area have motivated the author to investigate the potential of this algorithm to solve the problem at hand. The PSO is a population-based method that effectively seeks the best answer in the solution space with no need to solve complex equations. Simulation results indicate that PSO is successful in terms of optimality, but it shows some difficulties for real-time application
