Efficient Iterative Processing in the SciDB Parallel Array Engine
Many scientific data-intensive applications perform iterative computations on
array data. There exist multiple engines specialized for array processing.
These engines efficiently support various types of operations, but none
includes native support for iterative processing. In this paper, we develop a
model for iterative array computations and a series of optimizations. We
evaluate the benefits of an optimized, native support for iterative array
processing on the SciDB engine and real workloads from the astronomy domain
Multi-Step Knowledge-Aided Iterative ESPRIT for Direction Finding
In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for DOA estimation which
iteratively reduces the disturbance factors of the estimated data covariance
matrix and incorporates prior knowledge which is gradually obtained on line. An
analysis of the MSE of the reshaped data covariance matrix is carried out along
with comparisons between computational complexities of the proposed and
existing algorithms. Simulations focusing on closely-spaced sources, where they
are uncorrelated and correlated, illustrate the improvements achieved.Comment: 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1703.1052
Multiuser Detection and Channel Estimation for Multibeam Satellite Communications
In this paper, iterative multi-user detection techniques for multi-beam
communications are presented. The solutions are based on a successive
interference cancellation architecture and a channel decoding to treat the
co-channel interference. Beams forming and channels coefficients are estimated
and updated iteratively. A developed technique of signals combining allows
power improvement of the useful received signal; and then reduction of the bit
error rates with low signal to noise ratios. The approach is applied to a
synchronous multi-beam satellite link under an additive white Gaussian channel.
Evaluation of the techniques is done with computer simulations, where a noised
and multi-access environment is considered. The simulations results show the
good performance of the proposed solutions.Comment: 12 page
Compact continuum source-finding for next generation radio surveys
We present a detailed analysis of four of the most widely used radio source
finding packages in radio astronomy, and a program being developed for the
Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The four
packages; SExtractor, SFind, IMSAD and Selavy are shown to produce source
catalogues with high completeness and reliability. In this paper we analyse the
small fraction (~1%) of cases in which these packages do not perform well. This
small fraction of sources will be of concern for the next generation of radio
surveys which will produce many thousands of sources on a daily basis, in
particular for blind radio transients surveys. From our analysis we identify
the ways in which the underlying source finding algorithms fail. We demonstrate
a new source finding algorithm Aegean, based on the application of a Laplacian
kernel, which can avoid these problems and can produce complete and reliable
source catalogues for the next generation of radio surveys.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Maskless imaging of dense samples using pixel super-resolution based multi-height lensfree on-chip microscopy.
Lensfree in-line holographic microscopy offers sub-micron resolution over a large field-of-view (e.g., ~24 mm2) with a cost-effective and compact design suitable for field use. However, it is limited to relatively low-density samples. To mitigate this limitation, we demonstrate an on-chip imaging approach based on pixel super-resolution and phase recovery, which iterates among multiple lensfree intensity measurements, each having a slightly different sample-to-sensor distance. By digitally aligning and registering these lensfree intensity measurements, phase and amplitude images of dense and connected specimens can be iteratively reconstructed over a large field-of-view of ~24 mm2 without the use of any spatial masks. We demonstrate the success of this multi-height in-line holographic approach by imaging dense Papanicolaou smears (i.e., Pap smears) and blood samples
On multi-user EXIT chart analysis aided turbo-detected MBER beamforming designs
Abstract—This paper studies the mutual information transfer characteristics of a novel iterative soft interference cancellation (SIC) aided beamforming receiver communicating over both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath slow fading channels. Based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart technique, we investigate the convergence behavior of an iterative minimum bit error rate (MBER) multiuser detection (MUD) scheme as a function of both the system parameters and channel conditions in comparison to the SIC aided minimum mean square error (SIC-MMSE) MUD. Our simulation results show that the EXIT chart analysis is sufficiently accurate for the MBER MUD. Quantitatively, a two-antenna system was capable of supporting up to K=6 users at Eb/N0=3dB, even when their angular separation was relatively low, potentially below 20?. Sum Throughput Maximization in Multi-Tag Backscattering to Multiantenna Reader
Backscatter communication (BSC) is being realized as the core technology for
pervasive sustainable Internet-of-Things applications. However, owing to the
resource-limitations of passive tags, the efficient usage of multiple antennas
at the reader is essential for both downlink excitation and uplink detection.
This work targets at maximizing the achievable sum-backscattered-throughput by
jointly optimizing the transceiver (TRX) design at the reader and
backscattering coefficients (BC) at the tags. Since, this joint problem is
nonconvex, we first present individually-optimal designs for the TRX and BC. We
show that with precoder and {combiner} designs at the reader respectively
targeting downlink energy beamforming and uplink Wiener filtering operations,
the BC optimization at tags can be reduced to a binary power control problem.
Next, the asymptotically-optimal joint-TRX-BC designs are proposed for both low
and high signal-to-noise-ratio regimes. Based on these developments, an
iterative low-complexity algorithm is proposed to yield an efficient
jointly-suboptimal design. Thereafter, we discuss the practical utility of the
proposed designs to other application settings like wireless powered
communication networks and BSC with imperfect channel state information.
Lastly, selected numerical results, validating the analysis and shedding novel
insights, demonstrate that the proposed designs can yield significant
enhancement in the sum-backscattered throughput over existing benchmarks.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on
