    Optimal control design for robust fuzzy friction compensation in a robot joint

    This paper presents a methodology for the compensation of nonlinear friction in a robot joint structure based on a fuzzy local modeling technique. To enhance the tracking performance of the robot joint, a dynamic model is derived from the local physical properties of friction. The model is the basis of a precompensator taking into account the dynamics of the overall corrected system by means of a minor loop. The proposed structure does not claim to faithfully reproduce complex phenomena driven by friction. However, the linearity of the local models simplifies the design and implementation of the observer, and its estimation capabilities are improved by the nonlinear integral gain. The controller can then be robustly synthesized using linear matrix inequalities to cancel the effects of inexact friction compensation. Experimental tests conducted on a robot joint with a high level of friction demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy observer-based control strategy for tracking system trajectories when operating in zero-velocity regions and during motion reversals

    A Multistate Friction Model for the Compensation of the Asymmetric Hysteresis in the Mechanical Response of Pneumatic Artificial Muscles

    These days, biomimetic and compliant actuators have been made available to the main applications of rehabilitation and assistive robotics. In this context, the interaction control of soft robots, mechatronic surgical instruments and robotic prostheses can be improved through the adoption of pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs), a class of compliant actuators that exhibit some similarities with the structure and function of biological muscles. Together with the advantage of implementing adaptive compliance control laws, the nonlinear and hysteretic force/length characteristics of PAMs pose some challenges in the design and implementation of tracking control strategies. This paper presents a parsimonious and accurate model of the asymmetric hysteresis observed in the force response of PAMs. The model has been validated through the experimental identification of the mechanical response of a small-sized PAM where the asymmetric effects of hysteresis are more evident. Both the experimental results and a comparison with other dynamic friction models show that the proposed model could be useful to implement efficient compensation strategies for the tracking control of soft robots

    Motion stabilization in the presence of friction and backlash: a hybrid system approach

    In this paper a hybrid system approach is considered to deal with backlash and friction induced nonlinearities in mechanical control systems. To describe the low velocity frictional behaviour a linearized friction model is proposed. The novelty of this study is that based on the introduced friction model, the stability theorems developed for hybrid systems can directly be applied for controller design of mechanical systems in the presence of Stribeck friction and backlash. During the controller design it is assumed that the size of the backlash gap is unknown and the load side position and velocity cannot be measured. For motion control an LQ controller is applied. A condition is formulated for the control law parameters to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the control system. Simulation measurements were performed to confirm the theoretical results

    Dynamic Friction Parameter Identification Method with LuGre Model for Direct-Drive Rotary Torque Motor

    Attainment of high-performance motion/velocity control objectives for the Direct-Drive Rotary (DDR) torque motor should fully consider practical nonlinearities in controller design, such as dynamic friction. The LuGre model has been widely utilized to describe nonlinear friction behavior; however, parameter identification for the LuGre model remains a challenge. A new dynamic friction parameter identification method for LuGre model is proposed in this study. Static parameters are identified through a series of constant velocity experiments, while dynamic parameters are obtained through a presliding process. Novel evolutionary algorithm (NEA) is utilized to increase identification accuracy. Experimental results gathered from the identification experiments conducted in the study for a practical DDR torque motor control system validate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Framework for Static and Dynamic Friction Identification for Industrial Manipulators

    Even if friction modeling and compensation is a very important issue for manipulators, quite simple models are often adopted in the industrial world to avoid too heavy solutions from the computational point of view, and because of the difficulty of finding and identifying a model applicable in any motion condition. This article proposes a general framework for friction identification for industrial manipulators with the goal of solving the previous problems through: first, a complete procedure managing all the steps from data acquisition and model identification up to the generation of the code for the implementation into the robot software architecture, second, the possibility of adopting static or dynamic models of different complexity, and third, the development of some modifications in the dynamic friction model so to achieve a reliable friction torque estimation at any velocity and acceleration regime, avoiding unfeasible peaks and overestimation. The results of experimental tests carried out for different manipulators prove the validity and generality of the proposed friction model and identification procedure

    Development and characterization of a novel piezoelectric-driven stick-slip actuator with anisotropic-friction surfaces

    Piezoelectric actuators (PEA) hold the most promise for precision positioning applications due to their capability of producing extremely small displacements down to 10 pm (1 pm = 10-12 m) as well as their high stiffness and force output. The piezoelectric-driven stick-slip (PDSS) actuator, working on the friction-inertia concept, has the capacity of accomplishing an unlimited range of motion. It also holds the promises of simple configuration and low cost. On the other hand, the PDSS actuator has a relatively low efficiency and low loading capability, which greatly limits its applications. The purpose of this research is to improve the performance of the PDSS actuators by employing specially-designed working surfaces. The working surfaces, referred as anisotropic friction (AF) surfaces in this study, can provide different friction forces depending on the direction of relative motion of the two surfaces, and are used in this research to accomplish the aforementioned purpose. To fabricate such surfaces, two nanostructure technologies are employed: hot filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD) and ion beam etching (IBE). The HFCVD is used to deposit diamond on silicon substrates; and the IBE is used to etch the diamond crystalloid with a certain angle with respect to the coating surface to obtain an unsymmetrical-triangle microstructure. A PDSS actuator prototype containing the AF surfaces was developed in this study to verify the function of the AF surfaces and characterize the performance of PDSS actuators. The designed surfaces were mounted on the prototype; and the improvement in performance was characterized by conducting a set of experiments with both the normal isotropic friction (IF) surfaces and the AF surfaces, respectively. The results illustrate that the PDSS actuator with the AF surface has a higher efficiency and improved loading capability compared to the one with the IF surfaces. A model was also developed to represent the displacement of the novel PDSS actuator. The dynamics of the PEA and the platform were approximated by using a second order dynamic system. The pre-sliding friction behaviour involved was investigated by modifying the LuGre friction model, in which six parameters (Note that three parameters are used in the LuGre model) were employed to represent the anisotropic friction. By combining the PEA mechanism model, the modified friction model, and the dynamics of end-effector, a model for the PDSS actuator with the AF surface was developed. The model with the identified parameters was simulated in MATLAB Simulink and the simulation results obtained were compared to the experimental results to verify the model. The comparison suggests that the model developed in this study is promising to represent the displacement of the novel PDSS actuators with AF surfaces

    Stable adaptive fuzzy control with TSK fuzzy friction estimation for linear drive systems

    This paper considers the control of a linear drive system with friction and disturbance compensation. A stable adaptive controller integrated with fuzzy model-based friction estimation and switching-based disturbance compensation is proposed via Lyapunov stability theory. A TSK fuzzy model with local linear friction models is suggested for real-time estimation of its consequent local parameters. The parameters update law is derived based on linear parameterization. In order to compensate for the effects resulting from estimation error and disturbance, a robust switching law is incorporated in the overall stable adaptive control system. Extensive computer simulation results show that the proposed stable adaptive fuzzy control system has very good performances, and is potential for precision positioning and trajectory tracking control of linear drive systems

    Identification of mechanical parameters at low velocities for a micropositioning stage using a velocity hysteresis model

    The paper presents a velocity hysteresis friction model. This model can be used for simulation or control of an accurate micropositioning servomechanism. The mechanical and friction parameters are identified from measured signals at low velocities, and with the use of a closed loop identification method. The measured signals are very noised. The number of measurement samples available is very low. The friction model dépends on position, velocity and acceleration and includes the Coulomb, Stribeck and viscous frictions. A hystérésis effect integrated by an exponential term and the acceleration is added in the model. The identified parameters are validated by applying an efficient precision method based on the sensitivity analysis of nonlinear models and a normalized mean-square-error criterion.AN
