Prediction of progression in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis using CT scans atbaseline: A quantum particle swarm optimization - Random forest approach
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal lung disease characterized by an unpredictable progressive declinein lung function. Natural history of IPF is unknown and the prediction of disease progression at the time ofdiagnosis is notoriously difficult. High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has been used for the diagnosisof IPF, but not generally for monitoring purpose. The objective of this work is to develop a novel predictivemodel for the radiological progression pattern at voxel-wise level using only baseline HRCT scans. Mainly, thereare two challenges: (a) obtaining a data set of features for region of interest (ROI) on baseline HRCT scans andtheir follow-up status; and (b) simultaneously selecting important features from high-dimensional space, andoptimizing the prediction performance. We resolved the first challenge by implementing a study design andhaving an expert radiologist contour ROIs at baseline scans, depending on its progression status in follow-upvisits. For the second challenge, we integrated the feature selection with prediction by developing an algorithmusing a wrapper method that combines quantum particle swarm optimization to select a small number of featureswith random forest to classify early patterns of progression. We applied our proposed algorithm to analyzeanonymized HRCT images from 50 IPF subjects from a multi-center clinical trial. We showed that it yields aparsimonious model with 81.8% sensitivity, 82.2% specificity and an overall accuracy rate of 82.1% at the ROIlevel. These results are superior to other popular feature selections and classification methods, in that ourmethod produces higher accuracy in prediction of progression and more balanced sensitivity and specificity witha smaller number of selected features. Our work is the first approach to show that it is possible to use onlybaseline HRCT scans to predict progressive ROIs at 6 months to 1year follow-ups using artificial intelligence
A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms
Level set medical image segmentation aided by cooperative quantum particle optimization with Lévy flights
Image segmentation plays an important part of image processing, and is also the premise and basis of image analysis and image understanding and recognition. Among the level set based methods, the original Local Binary Fitting (LBF) algorithm is a successful deterministic algorithm that suffers from sensitization to size of the local minimum, image contours, shapes, and initial positions. Among them, Level Set method promotes the two-dimensional problem to the three-dimensional one and then solves it using implicit method to express closed curve of plane. In this article, a novel Level Set model aided by PSO was proposed to solve automated medical image segmentation. The experimental result of segmentations on the benchmark shows that our proposed method is effective to both simple and complex medical images
Techniques in Image Segmentations, its Limitations and Future Directions
There many techniques, used for image segmentation but few of them face problems like: improper utilization of spatial information. In this paper, combined fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM) with modified Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to improve the search ability of PSO and to integrate spatial information into the membership function for clustering is used. Here, in this paper discussion on segmentation techniques with their limitations is done. This would help in determining image segmentation method which would result to improved accuracy and performance
Velocity control of longitudinal vibration ultrasonic motor using improved Elman neural network trained by CQPSO with Lévy flights
Longitudinally vibration ultrasonic motor (LV-USM), a canonical nonlinear system, utilizes the inverse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric ceramic to generate the mechanical vibration within the scope of ultrasonic frequency. However, it is very difficult to establish a strict and accurate mathematical model. Hence seeking a dynamic identifier and controller for LV-USM avoiding the accurate mathematical model becomes a feasible approach. In this paper, a novel learning algorithm for dynamic recurrent Elman neural networks is present based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) to identify and control an LV-USM. To overcome the PSO’s global search ability, Lévy flights, a kind of random walks, are imported to improve the ability of exploration rather than Brownian motion or Gauss disturbance based on Cooperative Quantum-behaved PSO (CQPSO). Thereafter, a controller is designed to perform speed control for LV-USM along with the nonlinear identification also using this kind of neural network. By discrete Lyapunov stability approach, the controller is proven to be stable theoretically and the latter trial shows its robustness of anti-noise performance. In the experiments, the numerical results illustrate that the designed identifier and controller can achieve both higher convergence precision and speed, relative to current state-of-the-art other methods. Moreover, this controller shows lower control error than other approaches while the displacement of the rotor disc in LV-USM appears more smooth and uniform
