    Ship Hull Representation by Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline Surface Patches

    The purpose of this work is to propose a new method for representing the ship hull shape with mathematic surfaces so that geometric data can be generated for any point on the hull where required to assist the production process. An extensive survey of previous work is presented covering both the use of parametric curves and surfaces to model the ship hull and also the most relevant software systems developed for that purpose. The main methods and algorithms available for the generation and edition of curves and surfaces are presented and compared taking into consideration the intended application. From the analysis of the formulations available it was concluded that the most adequate one, which however had not yet been extensively used to model ship hulls was the Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS), due to the potential of their capability to represent exactly conic curves and surfaces. Therefore these surfaces were selected as the basis of the method developed in this thesis. A procedure is proposed for the representation of a given hull form in a two step approach, creating first a wireframe model over which the surface patches are generated. Both curves and surfaces are based on the NURBS formulation. To create the wireframe model, first a set of longitudinal boundary lines is selected, dividing the surface into areas of similar shape. Then, these lines are fitted by curves and faired to some extent. Next, transverse sections are defined and split by the boundary lines. Surface patches are then generated over the transverse section curves within the limits of each patch. Finally, to obtain the traditional representation of the ship surface by transverse sections, buttocks and waterlines, contour lines are generated for constant values of x, y and z coordinates. A computer system has been developed incorporating an interface that allows the visualization of the curves and surfaces being modeled. The system incorporates several algorithms for generation and edition of curves and surfaces, in addition to the main contribution of this thesis which is the use of NURBS to represent the ship hull surface. The system also incorporates curve and surface analysis tools and some basic fairing algorithms so that during the several steps of the creation of the model, the fairness of the curves and surfaces can be evaluated and improved to some extent. The procedure is tested and compared with an existing commercial system through some application examples, of a complete hull and in more detail in the bow region, showing that good results can be obtained with the system presented here

    Fairing wireframes in industrial surface design

    Wireframe is a modeling tool widely used in industrial geometric design. The term wireframe refers to two sets of curves, with the property that each curve from one set intersects with each curve from the other set. Akin to the mu-, v-isocurves in a tensor-product surface, the two sets of curves in a wireframe span an underlying surface. In many industrial design activities, wireframes are usually set up and adjusted by the designers before the whole surfaces are reconstructed. For adjustment, the fairness of wireframe has a direct influence on the quality of the underlying surface. Wireframe fairing is significantly different from fairing individual curves in that intersections should be preserved and kept in the same order. In this paper, we first present a technique for wireframe fairing by fixing the parameters during fairing. The limitation of fixed parameters is further released by an iterative gradient descent optimization method with step-size control. Experimental results show that our solution is efficient, and produces reasonably fairing results of the wireframes

    Key Challenges and Opportunities in Hull Form Design Optimisation for Marine and Offshore Applications

    New environmental regulations and volatile fuel prices have resulted in an ever-increasing need for reduction in carbon emission and fuel consumption. Designs of marine and offshore vessels are more demanding with complex operating requirements and oil and gas exploration venturing into deeper waters and hasher environments. Combinations of these factors have led to the need to optimise the design of the hull for the marine and offshore industry. The contribution of this paper is threefold. Firstly, the paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-ofthe- art techniques in hull form design. Specifically, it analyses geometry modelling, shape transformation, optimisation and performance evaluation. Strengths and weaknesses of existing solutions are also discussed. Secondly, key challenges of hull form optimisation specific to the design of marine and offshore vessels are identified and analysed. Thirdly, future trends in performing hull form design optimisation are investigated and possible solutions proposed. A case study on the design optimisation of bulbous bow for passenger ferry vessel to reduce wavemaking resistance is presented using NAPA software. Lastly, main issues and challenges are discussed to stimulate further ideas on future developments in this area, including the use of parallel computing and machine intelligence

    Enhancement of surface definition and gridding in the EAGLE code

    Algorithms for smoothing of curves and surfaces for the EAGLE grid generation program are presented. The method uses an existing automated technique which detects undesirable geometric characteristics by using a local fairness criterion. The geometry entity is then smoothed by repeated removal and insertion of spline knots in the vicinity of the geometric irregularity. The smoothing algorithm is formulated for use with curves in Beta spline form and tensor product B-spline surfaces

    Fairing-PIA: Progressive iterative approximation for fairing curve and surface generation

    The fairing curves and surfaces are used extensively in geometric design, modeling, and industrial manufacturing. However, the majority of conventional fairing approaches, which lack sufficient parameters to improve fairness, are based on energy minimization problems. In this study, we develop a novel progressive-iterative approximation method for fairing curve and surface generation (fairing-PIA). Fairing-PIA is an iteration method that can generate a series of curves (surfaces) by adjusting the control points of B-spline curves (surfaces). In fairing-PIA, each control point is endowed with an individual weight. Thus, the fairing-PIA has many parameters to optimize the shapes of curves and surfaces. Not only a fairing curve (surface) can be generated globally through fairing-PIA, but also the curve (surface) can be improved locally. Moreover, we prove the convergence of the developed fairing-PIA and show that the conventional energy minimization fairing model is a special case of fairing-PIA. Finally, numerical examples indicate that the proposed method is effective and efficient.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure

    AbstractA non-deterministic evolutionary approach for approximating the outlines of planar shapes has been developed. Non-uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS) have been utilized as an underlying approximation curve scheme. Simulated Annealing heuristic is used as an evolutionary methodology. In addition to independent studies of the optimization of weight and knot parameters of the NURBS, a separate scheme has also been developed for the optimization of weights and knots simultaneously. The optimized NURBS models have been fitted over the contour data of the planar shapes for the ultimate and automatic output. The output results are visually pleasing with respect to the threshold provided by the user. A web-based system has also been developed for the effective and worldwide utilization. The objective of this system is to provide the facility to visualize the output to the whole world through internet by providing the freedom to the user for various desired input parameters setting in the algorithm designed

    Feasible Form Parameter Design of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry

    This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It is for this reason that we use the title feasible form parameter design. In form parameter design, a design space is represented by a tuple of design parameters which are extended in each design space dimension. In this representation, a single feasible design is a consistent set of real valued parameters, one for every component of the design space tuple. Using the methodology to be given here, we pick out designs which consist of consistent parameters, narrowed to any desired precision up to that of the machine, even for equality constraints. Furthermore, the method is developed to enable the generation of complex hull forms using an extension of the basic rules idea to allow for automated generation of rules networks, plus the use of the truncated hierarchical B-splines, a wavelet-adaptive extension of standard B-splines and hierarchical B-splines. The adaptive resolution methods are employed in order to allow an automated program the freedom to generate complex B-spline representations of the geometry in a robust manner across multiple levels of detail. Thus two complementary objectives are pursued: ensuring feasible starting sets of form parameters, and enabling the generation of complex hull form geometry
