    Digital Control of Power Converters and Drives for Hybrid Traction and Wireless Charging

    In the last years environmental issues and constant increase of fuel and energy cost have been incentivizing the development of low emission and high efficiency systems, either in traction field or in distributed generation systems from renewable energy sources. In the automotive industry, alternative solutions to the standard internal combustion engine (ICE) adopted in the conventional vehicles have been developed, i.e. fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) or pure electric vehicles (EVs), also referred as battery powered electric vehicles (BEV). Both academic and industry researchers all over the world are still facing several technical development areas concerning HEV components, system topologies, power converters and control strategies. Efficiency, lifetime, stability and volume issues have moved the attention on a number of bidirectional conversion solutions, both for the energy transfer to/from the storage element and to/from the electric machine side. Moreover, along with the fast growing interest in EVs and PHEVs, wireless charging, as a new way of charging batteries, has drawn the attention of researchers, car manufacturers, and customers recently. Compared to conductive power transfer (usually plug-in), wireless power transfer (WPT) is more convenient, weather proof, and electric shock protected. However, there is still more research work needs to be done to optimize efficiency, cost, increase misalignment tolerance, and reduce size of the WPT chargers. The proposed dissertation describes the work from 2012 to 2014, during the PhD course at the Electric Drives Laboratory of the University of Udine and during my six months visiting scholarship at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. The topics studied are related to power conversion and digital control of converters and drives suitable for hybrid/electric traction, generation from renewable energy sources and wireless charging applications. From the theoretical point of view, multilevel and multiphase DC/AC and DC/DC converters are discussed here, focusing on design issues, optimization (especially from the efficiency point-of-view) and advantages. Some novel modulation algorithms for the neutral-point clamped three-level inverter are presented here as well as a new multiphase proposal for a three-level buck converter. In addition, a new active torque damping technique in order to reduce torque oscillations in internal combustion engines is proposed here. Mainly, two practical implementations are considered in this dissertation, i.e. an original two-stage bi-directional converter for mild hybrid traction and a wireless charger for electric vehicles fast charge

    Inverter Fault Diagnosis of an Electrical Series-Connected Two Sinusoidal Six-Phase Permanent Magnet Machines Drive

    This paper investigates a real-time fault diagnostic of a transportation system which needs two drives with fault-tolerance capabilities. Because of constraints on the mass of the system and on the cost of the Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), a drive with two Six-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) in series-connection supplied by two six-leg inverters is chosen. Despite the serial -connection, independent control of the two machines and fault –tolerance to open-switch fault is ensured. Nevertheless, a Fault Detection Identification (FDI) process is required for analysis and/or control reconfiguration. The proposed FDI is based on the combination of different criteria obtained from the two zero-sequence currents and from the normalized currents mapped into two frames defined by the Concordia Transformation. Results obtained from simulation and experimental tests show the effectiveness of the proposal.Projet CE2

    Оптимизация динамических режимов комплекса асинхронных электроприводов технологической линии

    The paper researches and synthesizes a control system of an electric drive complex for a fiberboard painting line for the construction and furniture industries. The line is built based on variable frequency drives (VFD). To improve the quality of products, a uniform coloring and drying of sheets at all stages of the technological process was provided. As some of the line rolls were transferred to an individual drive and a positive feedback on the current of the stator in an VFD with sensorless control was introduced, the task of integrated control of electric drives of the color line and reducing the share of defects to 1-3 % was solved.Представлены результаты исследований и синтеза системы управления комплекса электроприводов технологической линии окраски листового материала – древесноволокнистой плиты (ДВП) для строительной и мебельной промышленности. Линия построена на базе асинхронных электроприводов с частотным управлением (АЭП). Для повышения качества изделий решалась задача обеспечения равномерной окраски и сушки листов на всех стадиях технологического процесса. Перевод части валков линии на индивидуальный привод обеспечил возможность регулирования их скорости, что позволило добиться выравнивания линейной скорости протягивания листа. Введение положительной обратной связи по току статора в АЭП с бездатчиковым управлением группы валков, отвечающей за покраску листа ДВП, позволило эффективно решить задачу комплексного управления электроприводами линии окраски и уменьшить долю брака до 1–3 %

    The design and practical implementation of a six-phase induction motor

    This thesis presents a re-designed conventional three phase 5-hp squirrel cage, 4-pole, 48 slots induction motor to a six-phase induction motor (SPIM). It also presents the in-depth of a single layer winding of a three-phase motor that was re-design to the six-phase split winding layout which was practically explained to the understanding of both the engineers and the technicians who normally find it difficult with windings of electrical machines. The optimized re-designed SPIM is presented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to perform a comparative assessment of the different phase loss scenarios of the six-phase configuration with respect to the six-phase healthy case and its conventional three-phase induction motor. The result shows a comparative benefit of the six-phase induction motor over the three-phase induction motor; in such that in the near future because of its effective way to provide a higher reliability and sustainability under the loss of phase/phases condition it will be practically applied in the power driven devices/machines like in the area of Electric Vehicles, etc

    The first part of this thesis has focused on the construction of a twelve-phase asynchronous machine for More Electric Aircraft (MEA) applications. In fact, the aerospace world has found in electrification the way to improve the efficiency, reliability and maintainability of an aircraft. This idea leads to the aircraft a new management and distribution of electrical services. In this way is possible to remove or to reduce the hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic systems inside the aircraft. The second part of this dissertation is dedicated on the enhancement of the control range of matrix converters (MCs) operating with non-unity input power factor and, at the same time, on the reduction of the switching power losses. The analysis leads to the determination in closed form of a modulation strategy that features a control range, in terms of output voltage and input power factor, that is greater than that of the traditional strategies under the same operating conditions, and a reduction in the switching power losses

    Modelling and control techniques for multiphase electric drives: a phase variable approach

    Multiphase electric drives are today one of the most relevant research topics for the electrical engineering scientific community, thanks to the many advantages they offer over standard three-phase solutions (e.g., power segmentation, fault-tolerance, optimized performances, torque/power sharing strategies, etc...). They are considered promising solutions in many application areas, like industry, traction and renewable energy integration, and especially in presence of high-power or high-reliability requirements. However, contrarily to the three-phase counterparts, multiphase drives can assume a wider variety of different configurations, concerning both the electrical machine (e.g., symmetrical/asymmetrical windings disposition, concentrated/distributed windings, etc...) and the overall drive topology (e.g., single-star configuration, multiple-star configuration, open-end windings, etc…). This aspect, together with the higher number of variables of the system, can make their analysis and control more challenging, especially when dealing with reconfigurable systems (e.g., in post-fault scenarios). This Ph.D. thesis is focused on the mathematical modelling and on the control of multiphase electric drives. The aim of this research is to develop a generalized model-based approach that can be used in multiple configurations and scenarios, requiring minimal reconfigurations to deal with different machine designs and/or different converter topologies, and suitable both in healthy and in faulty operating conditions. Standard field-oriented approaches for the analysis and control of multiphase drives, directly derived as extensions of the three-phase equivalents, despite being relatively easy and convenient solutions to deal with symmetrical machines, may suffer some hurdles when applied to some asymmetrical configurations, including post-fault layouts. To address these issues, a different approach, completely derived in the phase variable domain, is here developed. The method does not require any vector space decomposition or rotational transformation but instead explicitly considers the mathematical properties of the multiphase machine and the effects of the drive topology (which typically introduces some constraints on the system variables). In this thesis work, the proposed approach is particularized for multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machines and for multiphase synchronous reluctance machines. All the results are obtained through rigorous mathematical derivations, and are supported and validated by both numerical analysis and experimental tests. As proven considering many different configurations and scenarios, the main benefits of the proposed methodology are its generality and flexibility, which make it a viable alternative to standard modelling and control algorithms
