    Personal data broker instead of blockchain for students’ data privacy assurance

    Data logs about learning activities are being recorded at a growing pace due to the adoption and evolution of educational technologies (Edtech). Data analytics has entered the field of education under the name of learning analytics. Data analytics can provide insights that can be used to enhance learning activities for educational stakeholders, as well as helping online learning applications providers to enhance their services. However, despite the goodwill in the use of Edtech, some service providers use it as a means to collect private data about the students for their own interests and benefits. This is showcased in recent cases seen in media of bad use of students’ personal information. This growth in cases is due to the recent tightening in data privacy regulations, especially in the EU. The students or their parents should be the owners of the information about them and their learning activities online. Thus they should have the right tools to control how their information is accessed and for what purposes. Currently, there is no technological solution to prevent leaks or the misuse of data about the students or their activity. It seems appropriate to try to solve it from an automation technology perspective. In this paper, we consider the use of Blockchain technologies as a possible basis for a solution to this problem. Our analysis indicates that the Blockchain is not a suitable solution.     Leveraging Cloud Computing and Software-as-a-Service to Build Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains

    Building sustainable and resilient supply chains has emerged as a strategic priority for organizations to improve their environmental, social, and governance performance while deal with unexpected disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, clear guidance for practitioners and analysis of the practices serving both purposes are missing. Leveraging cloud computing benefits, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products feature commercial and technical characteristics that help organizations resolve certain sustainable and resilient supply chain challenges by strengthening key capabilities, such as transparency, collaboration, and agility. We apply an affordance lens and a theory-generation case research design to define these challenges and identify how SaaS solutions can respond to them, using empirical qualitative data. We formulate SaaS affordances promoting the concepts of community, standard, update, data, applications, communication, and governance. We determine and illustrate the potential of SaaS solutions for sustainability and resilience for supply chain practitioners and software providers to help them unleash it

    Application programming interfaces (APIs) are an important component of digital infrastructure. Extensively employed in diverse industries, APIs are a boundary resource that enables new business models, enhances efficiency, and generates new sources of revenue. As little is known about how organizations deploy APIs, we conducted an exploratory examination of organizational deployment challenges of this important component of digital infrastructure. Analysis of semi-structured interview data collected within two large organizations reveals managerial challenges involving data, incentives, shared knowledge, and supplier management. Overall, our study contributes to knowledge about boundary resources while informing management practice concerning this emergent business imperative in the fourth industrial revolution

    Business organizations are increasing their investments in resources related to data analytics. However, these investments would not be transferred to business value unless business organizations use these resources efficiently for value creation. Prior literature has suggested that data analytics capabilities (DAC) are critical in generating value from data and data analytics for business organizations. However, prior research has primarily centered on examining the role of resources in data and data-related technologies and ignored the importance of data services and the quality of data-related resources in building DAC and in generating value. Thus, this study develops a data analytics capability building model based on the resource-based view and the information systems success model to explain how data quality, data system quality, and data service quality in business organizations may help build DAC, which could enhance business organizations’ business performance

    Digital transformation of higher education in Australia: Understanding affordance dynamics in E-Textbook engagement and use

    This paper addresses digital transformation in higher education by exploring the engagement and use of e-textbooks through an affordance theory lens. Drawing on the insights from in-depth interviews (n = 18), focus group discussions (n = 15), a pilot survey (n = 83) and the main survey (n = 344) in Australia, we developed and validated an affordance actualisation model for the engagement and use of e-textbooks. The partial least squares (PLS) technique was used to validate the dimensions of affordance actualisation and its relationship with e-textbooks engagement and affordance effect. The findings indicate the efficacy of the two affordance constructs, as well as the significant mediating effect of engagement. An important lesson for the e-textbook industry is that firms need to consider affordance actualisation dimensions (i.e., portability, accessibility, searchability, highlighting, copying, browsing, hedonic and utilitarian value) when enhancing digital engagement and use of e-textbooks

    Technology-Enhanced Learning Environments and Adaptive Learning Systems – Development of Functionality Taxonomies

    Especially against the background of the current coronavirus crisis, technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs) increasingly characterize teaching at universities. For the successful use and integration of TELEs, it is important to understand the functionalities of the technologies used. Based on the state of the art and following [1], we develop two taxonomies. The first taxonomy depicts eleven functionalities with different dimensions relevant for successfully designing TELEs. Sound knowledge of the functionalities supports research on adaptive learning within TELEs and the implementation of student-centered learning opportunities, which is structured in a second functionality taxonomy for adaptive learning systems (ALSs). We contribute to current research on TELEs and ALSs by providing a structured overview of functionalities and suggestions for further research with our research opportunities

    Online child sexual exploitation: a new MIS challenge

    © 2021, Association for Information Systems. All rights reserved. This paper deals with the difficult yet increasingly important MIS phenomenon of online child sexual exploitation (online CSE). Through the use of secondary and publicly available data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as primary data from a cybercrime police unit in the United Kingdom, this study takes a grounded theory approach and organizes the role that technologies and social actors play in shaping online CSE. The paper contributes to IS theory by providing a consolidated model for online CSE, which we call the technology and imagery dimensions model. This model combines the staging of the phenomenon and the key dimensions that depict how the use of technology and imagery both fuels and defuses the phenomenon. In informing the construction of the model, the paper extracts, organizes, and generalizes the affordances of technology and discusses the role of information systems in detecting online CSE
