An efficiency study on obtaining the minimum weight of a thermal protection system
Three minimizing techniques are evaluated to determine the most efficient method for minimizing the weight of a thermal protection system and for reducing computer usage time. The methods used (numerical optimization and nonlinear least squares) for solving the minimum-weight problem involving more than one material and more than one constraint are discussed. In addition, the one material and one constraint problem is discussed

Thick GaN film stress-induced self-separation
Cracking of thick GaN films on sapphire substrates during the cooling down
after the growth was studied. The cracking was suppressed by increasing the
film-to-substrate thickness ratio and by using an intermediate carbon buffer
layer, that reduced the binding energy between the GaN film and the substrate.
Wafer-scale self-separation of thick GaN films has been demonstrated.Comment: Published in Proceedings of the 2019 IEEE Conference of Russian Young

Automatic face alignment by maximizing similarity score
Accurate face registration is of vital importance to the performance of a face recognition algorithm. We propose a face registration method which searches for the optimal alignment by maximizing the score of a face recognition algorithm. In this paper we investigate the practical usability of our face registration method. Experiments show that our registration method achieves better results in face verification than the landmark based registration method. We even obtain face verification results which are similar to results obtained using landmark based registration with manually located eyes, nose and mouth as landmarks. The performance of the method is tested on the FRGCv1 database using images taken under both controlled and uncontrolled conditions
Chebyshev semi-iteration in Preconditioning
It is widely believed that Krylov subspace iterative methods are better than Chebyshev semi-iterative methods. When the solution of a linear system with a symmetric and positive definite coefficient matrix is required then the Conjugate Gradient method will compute the optimal approximate solution from the appropriate Krylov subspace, that is, it will implicitly compute the optimal polynomial. Hence a semi-iterative method, which requires eigenvalue bounds and computes an explicit polynomial, must, for just a little less computational work, give an inferior result. In this manuscript we identify a specific situation in the context of preconditioning when the Chebyshev semi-iterative method is the method of choice since it has properties which make it superior to the Conjugate Gradient method
