    Efficient Evaluation of the Number of False Alarm Criterion

    This paper proposes a method for computing efficiently the significance of a parametric pattern inside a binary image. On the one hand, a-contrario strategies avoid the user involvement for tuning detection thresholds, and allow one to account fairly for different pattern sizes. On the other hand, a-contrario criteria become intractable when the pattern complexity in terms of parametrization increases. In this work, we introduce a strategy which relies on the use of a cumulative space of reduced dimensionality, derived from the coupling of a classic (Hough) cumulative space with an integral histogram trick. This space allows us to store partial computations which are required by the a-contrario criterion, and to evaluate the significance with a lower computational cost than by following a straightforward approach. The method is illustrated on synthetic examples on patterns with various parametrizations up to five dimensions. In order to demonstrate how to apply this generic concept in a real scenario, we consider a difficult crack detection task in still images, which has been addressed in the literature with various local and global detection strategies. We model cracks as bounded segments, detected by the proposed a-contrario criterion, which allow us to introduce additional spatial constraints based on their relative alignment. On this application, the proposed strategy yields state-of the-art results, and underlines its potential for handling complex pattern detection tasks

    A Patch-Based Method for Repetitive and Transient Event Detection in Fluorescence Imaging

    Automatic detection and characterization of molecular behavior in large data sets obtained by fast imaging in advanced light microscopy become key issues to decipher the dynamic architectures and their coordination in the living cell. Automatic quantification of the number of sudden and transient events observed in fluorescence microscopy is discussed in this paper. We propose a calibrated method based on the comparison of image patches expected to distinguish sudden appearing/vanishing fluorescent spots from other motion behaviors such as lateral movements. We analyze the performances of two statistical control procedures and compare the proposed approach to a frame difference approach using the same controls on a benchmark of synthetic image sequences. We have then selected a molecular model related to membrane trafficking and considered real image sequences obtained in cells stably expressing an endocytic-recycling trans-membrane protein, the Langerin-YFP, for validation. With this model, we targeted the efficient detection of fast and transient local fluorescence concentration arising in image sequences from a data base provided by two different microscopy modalities, wide field (WF) video microscopy using maximum intensity projection along the axial direction and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Finally, the proposed detection method is briefly used to statistically explore the effect of several perturbations on the rate of transient events detected on the pilot biological model

    Simultaneous motion detection and background reconstruction with a conditional mixed-state markov random field

    In this work we present a new way of simultaneously solving the problems of motion detection and background image reconstruction. An accurate estimation of the background is only possible if we locate the moving objects. Meanwhile, a correct motion detection is achieved if we have a good available background model. The key of our joint approach is to define a single random process that can take two types of values, instead of defining two different processes, one symbolic (motion detection) and one numeric (background intensity estimation). It thus allows to exploit the (spatio-temporal) interaction between a decision (motion detection) and an estimation (intensity reconstruction) problem. Consequently, the meaning of solving both tasks jointly, is to obtain a single optimal estimate of such a process. The intrinsic interaction and simultaneity between both problems is shown to be better modeled within the so-called mixed-state statistical framework, which is extended here to account for symbolic states and conditional random fields. Experiments on real sequences and comparisons with existing motion detection methods support our proposal.     Point tracking: an a-contrario approach

    In this work, we propose a new approach to recover trajectories from points previously detected in a sequence of images. In presence of spurious and missing detections, actual trajectories can be characterized by an a-contrario model, that estimates the probability of observing a similar trajectory in random data. This results in a single criterion combining trajectory characteristics (duration, number of points, smoothness) and data statistics (number of images and detected points), which can then be used to drive a dynamic programming algorithm able to extract sequentially the most meaningful trajectories. The performances obtained on synthetic and real-world data are studied in detail, and shown to compare favorably to the state-of-the-art ROADS algorithm

    Geometric uncertainty models for correspondence problems in digital image processing

    Many recent advances in technology rely heavily on the correct interpretation of an enormous amount of visual information. All available sources of visual data (e.g. cameras in surveillance networks, smartphones, game consoles) must be adequately processed to retrieve the most interesting user information. Therefore, computer vision and image processing techniques gain significant interest at the moment, and will do so in the near future. Most commonly applied image processing algorithms require a reliable solution for correspondence problems. The solution involves, first, the localization of corresponding points -visualizing the same 3D point in the observed scene- in the different images of distinct sources, and second, the computation of consistent geometric transformations relating correspondences on scene objects. This PhD presents a theoretical framework for solving correspondence problems with geometric features (such as points and straight lines) representing rigid objects in image sequences of complex scenes with static and dynamic cameras. The research focuses on localization uncertainty due to errors in feature detection and measurement, and its effect on each step in the solution of a correspondence problem. Whereas most other recent methods apply statistical-based models for spatial localization uncertainty, this work considers a novel geometric approach. Localization uncertainty is modeled as a convex polygonal region in the image space. This model can be efficiently propagated throughout the correspondence finding procedure. It allows for an easy extension toward transformation uncertainty models, and to infer confidence measures to verify the reliability of the outcome in the correspondence framework. Our procedure aims at finding reliable consistent transformations in sets of few and ill-localized features, possibly containing a large fraction of false candidate correspondences. The evaluation of the proposed procedure in practical correspondence problems shows that correct consistent correspondence sets are returned in over 95% of the experiments for small sets of 10-40 features contaminated with up to 400% of false positives and 40% of false negatives. The presented techniques prove to be beneficial in typical image processing applications, such as image registration and rigid object tracking

    Video event detection and visual data pro cessing for multimedia applications

    Cette thèse (i) décrit une procédure automatique pour estimer la condition d'arrêt des méthodes de déconvolution itératives basées sur un critère d'orthogonalité du signal estimé et de son gradient à une itération donnée; (ii) présente une méthode qui décompose l'image en une partie géométrique (ou "cartoon") et une partie "texture" en utilisation une estimation de paramètre et une condition d'arrêt basées sur la diffusion anisotropique avec orthogonalité, en utilisant le fait que ces deux composantes. "cartoon" et "texture", doivent être indépendantes; (iii) décrit une méthode pour extraire d'une séquence vidéo obtenue à partir de caméra portable les objets de premier plan en mouvement. Cette méthode augmente la compensation de mouvement de la caméra par une nouvelle estimation basée noyau de la fonction de probabilité de densité des pixels d'arrière-plan. Les méthodes présentées ont été testées et comparées aux algorithmes de l'état de l'art.This dissertation (i) describes an automatic procedure for estimating the stopping condition of non-regularized iterative deconvolution methods based on an orthogonality criterion of the estimated signal and its gradient at a given iteration; (ii) presents a decomposition method that splits the image into geometric (or cartoon) and texture parts using anisotropic diffusion with orthogonality based parameter estimation and stopping condition, utilizing the theory that the cartoon and the texture components of an image should be independent of each other; (iii) describes a method for moving foreground object extraction in sequences taken by wearable camera, with strong motion, where the camera motion compensated frame differencing is enhanced with a novel kernel-based estimation of the probability density function of the background pixels.     Abstract. The aim of motion detection is to decide whether a given part of an image belongs to a moving object or to the static background. This paper proposes an automatic decision rule for the detection of moving regions. The proposed framework is derived from a perceptual grouping principle, namely the Helmholtz principle. This principle basically states that perceptually relevant events are perceived because they deviate from a model of complete randomness. Detections are then said to be performed a contrario: moving regions appear as low probability events in a model corresponding to the absence of moving objects in the scene. A careful design of the events considered under the hypothesis of absence of moving objects results in a general and robust motion detection algorithm. No posterior parameter tuning is necessary. Furthermore, a confidence level is attached to each detected region
