    Latency Bounds of Packet-Based Fronthaul for Cloud-RAN with Functionality Split

    The emerging Cloud-RAN architecture within the fifth generation (5G) of wireless networks plays a vital role in enabling higher flexibility and granularity. On the other hand, Cloud-RAN architecture introduces an additional link between the central, cloudified unit and the distributed radio unit, namely fronthaul (FH). Therefore, the foreseen reliability and latency for 5G services should also be provisioned over the FH link. In this paper, focusing on Ethernet as FH, we present a reliable packet-based FH communication and demonstrate the upper and lower bounds of latency that can be offered. These bounds yield insights into the trade-off between reliability and latency, and enable the architecture design through choice of splitting point, focusing on high layer split between PDCP and RLC and low layer split between MAC and PHY, under different FH bandwidth and traffic properties.     Low-Latency Millimeter-Wave Communications: Traffic Dispersion or Network Densification?

    This paper investigates two strategies to reduce the communication delay in future wireless networks: traffic dispersion and network densification. A hybrid scheme that combines these two strategies is also considered. The probabilistic delay and effective capacity are used to evaluate performance. For probabilistic delay, the violation probability of delay, i.e., the probability that the delay exceeds a given tolerance level, is characterized in terms of upper bounds, which are derived by applying stochastic network calculus theory. In addition, to characterize the maximum affordable arrival traffic for mmWave systems, the effective capacity, i.e., the service capability with a given quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, is studied. The derived bounds on the probabilistic delay and effective capacity are validated through simulations. These numerical results show that, for a given average system gain, traffic dispersion, network densification, and the hybrid scheme exhibit different potentials to reduce the end-to-end communication delay. For instance, traffic dispersion outperforms network densification, given high average system gain and arrival rate, while it could be the worst option, otherwise. Furthermore, it is revealed that, increasing the number of independent paths and/or relay density is always beneficial, while the performance gain is related to the arrival rate and average system gain, jointly. Therefore, a proper transmission scheme should be selected to optimize the delay performance, according to the given conditions on arrival traffic and system service capability

    Performance Prediction of Cloud-Based Big Data Applications

    Big data analytics have become widespread as a means to extract knowledge from large datasets. Yet, the heterogeneity and irregular- ity usually associated with big data applications often overwhelm the existing software and hardware infrastructures. In such con- text, the exibility and elasticity provided by the cloud computing paradigm o er a natural approach to cost-e ectively adapting the allocated resources to the application’s current needs. However, these same characteristics impose extra challenges to predicting the performance of cloud-based big data applications, a key step to proper management and planning. This paper explores three modeling approaches for performance prediction of cloud-based big data applications. We evaluate two queuing-based analytical models and a novel fast ad hoc simulator in various scenarios based on di erent applications and infrastructure setups. The three ap- proaches are compared in terms of prediction accuracy, nding that our best approaches can predict average application execution times with 26% relative error in the very worst case and about 7% on average

    Exact Simulation for Fork-Join Networks with Heterogeneous Service

    This paper considers a fork-join network with a group of heterogeneous servers in each service station, e.g. servers having different service rate. The main research interests are the properties of such fork-join networks in equilibrium, such as distributions of response times, maximum queue lengths and load carried by servers. This paper uses exact Monte-Carlo simulation methods to estimate the characteristics of heterogeneous fork-join networks in equilibrium, for which no explicit formulas are available. The algorithm developed is based on coupling from the past. The efficiency of the sampling algorithm is shown theoretically and via simulation

    Nested Fork-Join Queuing Networks and Their Application to Mobility Airfield Operations Analysis

    A single-chain nested fork-join queuing network (FJQN) model of mobility airfield ground processing is proposed. In order to analyze the queuing network model, advances on two fronts are made. First, a general technique for decomposing nested FJQNs with probabilistic forks is proposed, which consists of incorporating feedback loops into the embedded Markov chain of the synchronization station, then using Marie\u27s Method to decompose the network. Numerical studies show this strategy to be effective, with less than two percent relative error in the approximate performance measures in most realistic cases. The second contribution is the identification of a quick, efficient method for solving for the stationary probabilities of the λn/Ck/r/N queue. Unpreconditioned Conjugate Gradient Squared is shown to be the method of choice in the context of decomposition using Marie\u27s Method, thus broadening the class of networks where the method is of practical use. The mobility airfield model is analyzed using the strategies described above, and accurate approximations of airfield performance measures are obtained in a fraction of the time needed for a simulation study.
