Performance and Optimization Abstractions for Large Scale Heterogeneous Systems in the Cactus/Chemora Framework
We describe a set of lower-level abstractions to improve performance on
modern large scale heterogeneous systems. These provide portable access to
system- and hardware-dependent features, automatically apply dynamic
optimizations at run time, and target stencil-based codes used in finite
differencing, finite volume, or block-structured adaptive mesh refinement
codes.
These abstractions include a novel data structure to manage refinement
information for block-structured adaptive mesh refinement, an iterator
mechanism to efficiently traverse multi-dimensional arrays in stencil-based
codes, and a portable API and implementation for explicit SIMD vectorization.
These abstractions can either be employed manually, or be targeted by
automated code generation, or be used via support libraries by compilers during
code generation. The implementations described below are available in the
Cactus framework, and are used e.g. in the Einstein Toolkit for relativistic
astrophysics simulations
Zero overshoot and fast transient response using a fuzzy logic controller
In some industrial process control systems it is
desirable not to allow an overshoot beyond the setpoint or a threshold, this could be a safety constraint or the requirement of the system. This paper outlines our work in designing a fuzzy PID controller to achieve a step-response with zero overshoot while improving the output transient response. Our designed fuzzy PID controller is applied to stable, marginally stable and unstable systems and their step responses are compared with a tuned conventional PID controller. A comparative case study shows that the proposed fuzzy controller is highly effective and
outperforms the PID controller in achieving a zero overshoot response and enhancing the output transient response
Practical recommendations for gradient-based training of deep architectures
Learning algorithms related to artificial neural networks and in particular
for Deep Learning may seem to involve many bells and whistles, called
hyper-parameters. This chapter is meant as a practical guide with
recommendations for some of the most commonly used hyper-parameters, in
particular in the context of learning algorithms based on back-propagated
gradient and gradient-based optimization. It also discusses how to deal with
the fact that more interesting results can be obtained when allowing one to
adjust many hyper-parameters. Overall, it describes elements of the practice
used to successfully and efficiently train and debug large-scale and often deep
multi-layer neural networks. It closes with open questions about the training
difficulties observed with deeper architectures
A survey on fractional order control techniques for unmanned aerial and ground vehicles
In recent years, numerous applications of science and engineering for modeling and control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) systems based on fractional calculus have been realized. The extra fractional order derivative terms allow to optimizing the performance of the systems. The review presented in this paper focuses on the control problems of the UAVs and UGVs that have been addressed by the fractional order techniques over the last decade
Online Learning for Ground Trajectory Prediction
This paper presents a model based on an hybrid system to numerically simulate
the climbing phase of an aircraft. This model is then used within a trajectory
prediction tool. Finally, the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy
(CMA-ES) optimization algorithm is used to tune five selected parameters, and
thus improve the accuracy of the model. Incorporated within a trajectory
prediction tool, this model can be used to derive the order of magnitude of the
prediction error over time, and thus the domain of validity of the trajectory
prediction. A first validation experiment of the proposed model is based on the
errors along time for a one-time trajectory prediction at the take off of the
flight with respect to the default values of the theoretical BADA model. This
experiment, assuming complete information, also shows the limit of the model. A
second experiment part presents an on-line trajectory prediction, in which the
prediction is continuously updated based on the current aircraft position. This
approach raises several issues, for which improvements of the basic model are
proposed, and the resulting trajectory prediction tool shows statistically
