Business Role-Object Specification: A Language for Behavior-aware Structural Modeling of Business Objects
Representing and reusing the business objects of a domain model for various use cases can be difficult. Especially, if the domain model is acting as a template or a guideline, it is necessary to map the enterpriseâs individual structure and processes on the shared domain model. Structural modeling languages often do not meet this requirement of reusing structures and complying to established processes. We propose a modeling language called BROS (Business Role-Object Specification) for describing the business objectsâ structure and behavior for structural models, based on a given domain model and process models. It utilizes roles for a use case related specification of business objects as well as events as interfaces for the business processes affecting these roles. Thus, we are able to represent and adapt the business object in different contexts with individual requirements, without changing the underlying domain model. We demonstrate our approach by modeling a simple case
Versions and configurations in object-oriented database systems : a uniform treatment
Object-oriented database models usually allow versions only at the most specialized type/c1ass in an inheritance hierarchy. The possibility of having versions at different levels of abstraction provides a richer model and allows a more natural representation of the reality. The presence of objects and its corresponding sets of versions at different levels of a type/class hierarchy introduces the need for handling version mappings. Integrity constraints can be associated to these mappings, restricting the set of possible combinations of versions appearing at different levels of the hierarchy. Sets of versions associated with each levei of an object hierarchy often represent a very large set of possible configurations for that object, which is difficult to be handled directly by the user. In this context, adequate mechanisms are very important to define and build object configurations by means of selections applied to the set of all possible configurations, defined by the combinations of versions. This paper proposes an approach in which versions and configurations may appear at different levels of an inheritance hierarchy, and a uniform treatment is given to these two concepts
Object migration in temporal object-oriented databases
The paper presents T-ORM (Temporal Objects with Roles Model), an object-oriented data model based on the concepts of class and role. In order to represent the evolution of real-world entities, T-ORM allows objects to change state, roles and class in their lifetime. In particular, it handles structural and behavioral changes that occur in objects when they migrate from a given class to another. First, the paper introduces the basic features of the T-ORM data model, emphasizing those related to object migration. Then, it presents the query and manipulation languages associated with T-ORM, focusing on the treatment of the temporal aspects of object evolution
The use of Database Management Systems to support non conventional applications put in evidence a set of requirements not supported by the traditional database systerns, and strongly motivated research work towards object oriented database systems. In this context, it was evident the need to liberate the number of instances associated to one database object, to represent the history of the object, to gain flexibility in schema evolution, ar to maintain data consistency, in concurrent access environments, originating the version concept. This work presents an analysis of the version concept, when integrated with the already incorporated concepts of the object-oriented paradigm and discusses the need for new concepts. Aspects considered include: relationships between versions, as well as the conditions imposed by the class and type hierarchies over the versioning of objects and its ascendants and descendants. A multi-Ievel architecture is proposed, which allows versioned objects to appear in any levei of a type ar class hierarchy. This approach is compared with the traditional one, in which versions appear only at the leaves of the hierarchies. It is shown how the proposed architecture allows modeling of many situations of real world applications in a more natural way
Role-based Adaptation of Business Reference Models to Application Models: An Enterprise Modeling Methodology for Software Construction
Large software systems are in need of a construction plan to determine and define every concept and element used in order to not end up in complex, unusable, and cost-intensive systems. Different modeling languages, like UML, support the development of these construction plans and visualize them for the systemâs stakeholders. Reference models are a specific kind of construction plan, used as templates for information systems and already capture business domain knowledge for reuse and tailoring. By adaptation, reference models are tailored to enterprise-specific application models, which can be used for software construction and maintenance. However, current adaptation methods suffer from the limitations of pure object-oriented development (e.g., identity issues, large inheritance trees, and inflexibility). In this thesis, the usage of roles as the sole adaptation mechanism is proposed to solve these challenges. With the help of conceptual roles, it is possible to create rich model variations and adaptations from existing (industry standard) reference models, and it is simpler to react to model evolution and changing business logic. Adaptations can be specified with more precision by maintaining or even increasing the modelâs expressiveness. As a consequence, the role-enriched final application model can be used to describe software systems in more detail, with different perspectives, and, if available, can be implemented with a role supporting programming language. However, even without this step, the application model itself will provide valuable insights into the overall construction plan of a software system by the combination of structure and behavior and a clear separation of relatively stable domain knowledge from its use case specific adaptation

An object-oriented temporal model
The representation of complex objects anel behaviors (state transition s) in infmmation systems is a central issue in software engineering. In an infonnation system, supported by a conventional database, the only available state is the set of present values. The object's behavior is controlled by integrity constrains defining only the valid ~;tates. Almost all the representation of the dynamic evolution is lost in the traditional modeling process. In this paper the main concern is to present the extensions made on an ObjectOiiented Model, the F-ORM model [DeAntonellis 91 J to expand the representation o f the object's evolution and to support the teniporal aspects involved. Temporal object-oriented rnodels can be used to specify behavioral requirements of information systems. Four different model ing concepts are defined to represent temporal information: ( l) a set o f temporal data types anel their associated function s, to be used in properties' definitions; (2) time stamps assoei ateei to instances anel to dynamic properties; (3) a special null value for attribute values outside the validity period; and (4) temporal conditions added to rules, written in a temporal logic language. An example showing the use of the Temporal F-ORM is developed
