Because of the limited bandwidth of the channels, such random packet losses could occur, simultaneously, in the communication channels from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator. The random packet loss is assumed to obey the Bernoulli random binary distribution, and the parameter uncertainties are norm-bounded and enter into both the system and output matrices. In the presence of random packet losses, an observer-based feedback controller is designed to robustly exponentially stabilize the networked system in the sense of mean square and also achieve the prescribed Hinfin disturbance-rejection-attenuation level. Both the stability-analysis and controller-synthesis problems are thoroughly investigated. It is shown that the controller-design problem under consideration is solvable if certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are feasible. A simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed LMI approach

Robust H-infinity sliding mode control for nonlinear stochastic systems with multiple data packet losses
This is the post-print version of this Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 John Wiley & SonsIn this paper, an ∞ sliding mode control (SMC) problem is studied for a class of discrete-time nonlinear stochastic systems with multiple data packet losses. The phenomenon of data packet losses, which is assumed to occur in a random way, is taken into consideration in the process of data transmission through both the state-feedback loop and the measurement output. The probability for the data packet loss for each individual state variable is governed by a corresponding individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution over the interval [0 1]. The discrete-time system considered is also subject to norm-bounded parameter uncertainties and external nonlinear disturbances, which enter the system state equation in both matched and unmatched ways. A novel stochastic discrete-time switching function is proposed to facilitate the sliding mode controller design. Sufficient conditions are derived by means of the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. It is shown that the system dynamics in the specified sliding surface is exponentially stable in the mean square with a prescribed ∞ noise attenuation level if an LMI with an equality constraint is feasible. A discrete-time SMC controller is designed capable of guaranteeing the discrete-time sliding mode reaching condition of the specified sliding surface with probability 1. Finally, a simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the U.K. under Grant

A modified Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is proposed in which the consequent parts are composed of a set of discrete-time state equations containing a repeated scalar nonlinearity. Such a model can describe some well-known nonlinear systems such as recurrent neural networks. The measurement transmission between the plant and controller is assumed to be imperfect and a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution is utilized to represent the phenomenon of random packet losses. Attention is focused on the analysis and design of H∞ fuzzy controllers with the same repeated scalar nonlinearities such that the closed-loop T-S fuzzy control system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H∞ performance. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of admissible controllers, and the cone complementarity linearization procedure is employed to cast the controller design problem into a sequential minimization one subject to linear matrix inequalities, which can be readily solved by using standard numerical software. Two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method

All the system parameters are time-varying and the uncertainty enters into the state matrix. The measurement missing phenomenon occurs in a random way, and the missing probability for each sensor is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval . The stochastic nonlinearities under consideration here are described by statistical means which can cover several classes of well-studied nonlinearities. Sufficient conditions are derived for a finite-horizon filter to satisfy both the estimation error variance constraints and the prescribed H ∞ performance requirement. These conditions are expressed in terms of the feasibility of a series of recursive linear matrix inequalities (RLMIs). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed filter design scheme. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the U.K. by Grant GR/S27658/01, the Royal Society of the U.K., National Natural Science Foundation of China by Grants 60825303 and 60834003, National 973 Project of China by Grant 2009CB320600, Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation by Grant

Observer-based networked control for continuous-time systems with random sensor delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link - Copyright 2009 Elsevier LtdThis paper is concerned with the networked control system design for continuous-time systems with random measurement, where the measurement channel is assumed to subject to random sensor delay. A design scheme for the observer-based output feedback controller is proposed to render the closed-loop networked system exponentially mean-square stable with H∞ performance requirement. The technique employed is based on appropriate delay systems approach combined with a matrix variable decoupling technique. The design method is fulfilled through solving linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is used to verify the effectiveness and the merits of the present results. This paper was not presented at any IFAC meeting. Observer-based H∞ control for systems with repeated scalar nonlinearities and multiple packet losses
This paper is concerned with the H∞ control problem for a class of systems with repeated scalar nonlinearities and multiple missing measurements. The nonlinear system is described by a discrete-time state equation involving a repeated scalar nonlinearity, which typically appears in recurrent neural networks. The measurement missing phenomenon is assumed to occur, simultaneously, in the communication channels from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator, where the missing probability for each sensor/actuator is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval [0 1]. Attention is focused on the analysis and design of an observer-based feedback controller such that the closed-loop control system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H∞ performance. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of admissible controllers. It is shown that the controller design problem under consideration is solvable if certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are feasible. Three examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed theoretical result
Analysis, filtering, and control for Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models in networked systems

Among different kinds of models for fuzzy systems, the so-called Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model has been quite popular due to its convenient and simple dynamic structure as well as its capability of approximating any smooth nonlinear function to any specified accuracy within any compact set. In terms of such a model, the performance analysis and the design of controllers and filters play important roles in the research of fuzzy systems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the T-S fuzzy control and filtering problems with various network-induced phenomena. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include communication delays, packet dropouts, signal quantization, and randomly occurring uncertainties (ROUs). With such network-induced phenomena, the developments on T-S fuzzy control and filtering issues are reviewed in detail. In addition, some latest results on this topic are highlighted. In the end, conclusions are drawn and some possible future research directions are pointed out. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61134009, 61329301, 11301118 and 61174136, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province of China under Grant BK20130017, the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China under Grant CUSF-DH-D-2013061, the Royal Society of the U.K., and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
Distributed Event-Based State Estimation for Networked Systems: An LMI-Approach
In this work, a dynamic system is controlled by multiple sensor-actuator
agents, each of them commanding and observing parts of the system's input and
output. The different agents sporadically exchange data with each other via a
common bus network according to local event-triggering protocols. From these
data, each agent estimates the complete dynamic state of the system and uses
its estimate for feedback control. We propose a synthesis procedure for
designing the agents' state estimators and the event triggering thresholds. The
resulting distributed and event-based control system is guaranteed to be stable
and to satisfy a predefined estimation performance criterion. The approach is
applied to the control of a vehicle platoon, where the method's trade-off
between performance and communication, and the scalability in the number of
agents is demonstrated.Comment: This is an extended version of an article to appear in the IEEE
