Mobile application platform heterogeneity: Android vs Windows phone vs iOS vs Firefox OS

    Get PDF
Modern smartphones have a rich spectrum of increasingly sophisticated features, opening opportunities for software-led innovation. Of the large number of platforms to develop new software on, in this paper we look closely at three platforms identified as market leaders for the smartphone market by Gartner Group in 2013 and one platform, Firefox OS, representing a new paradigm for operating systems based on web technologies. We compare the platforms in several different categories, such as software architecture, application development, platform capabilities and constraints, and, finally, developer support. Using the implementation of a mobile version of the tic-tac-toe game on all the four platforms, we seek to investigate strengths, weaknesses and challenges of mobile application development on these platforms. Big differences are highlighted when inspecting community environments, hardware abilities and platform maturity. These inevitably impact upon developer choices when deciding on mobile platform development strategies

Design and implementation of a federated health record server

    Get PDF
This paper describes the practical implementation of a federated health record serverbased on a generic and comprehensive public domain architecture and deployed in alive clinical setting. The authors, working at the Centre for Health Informatics and MultiprofessionalEducation (University College London), have built up over a decade of experiencewithin Europe on the requirements and information models that are needed to underpincomprehensive multi-professional electronic health records. This work has involvedcollaboration with a wide range of healthcare and informatics organisations and partnersin the healthcare computing industry across Europe though the EU Health Telematicsprojects GEHR, Synapses, EHCR-SupA, SynEx and Medicate. The resultingarchitecture models have influenced recent European standards in this area, such asCEN TC/251 ENV 13606. UCL has now designed and built a federated health recordserver based on these models which is now running in the Department ofCardiovascular Medicine at the Whittington Hospital in north London. A new EC FifthFramework project, 6WINIT, is enabling new and innovative IPv6 and wirelesstechnology solutions to be added to this work. The north London clinical demonstrator site has provided the solid basis from which toestablish "proof of concept" verification of the design approach, and a valuableopportunity to install, test and evaluate the results of the component engineeringundertaken during the EC funded projects

Teaching and learning in virtual worlds: is it worth the effort?

    Get PDF
Educators have been quick to spot the enormous potential afforded by virtual worlds for situated and authentic learning, practising tasks with potentially serious consequences in the real world and for bringing geographically dispersed faculty and students together in the same space (Gee, 2007; Johnson and Levine, 2008). Though this potential has largely been realised, it generally isn’t without cost in terms of lack of institutional buy-in, steep learning curves for all participants, and lack of a sound theoretical framework to support learning activities (Campbell, 2009; Cheal, 2007; Kluge & Riley, 2008). This symposium will explore the affordances and issues associated with teaching and learning in virtual worlds, all the time considering the question: is it worth the effort

Transforming pre-service teacher curriculum: observation through a TPACK lens

    Get PDF
This paper will discuss an international online collaborative learning experience through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. The teacher knowledge required to effectively provide transformative learning experiences for 21st century learners in a digital world is complex, situated and changing. The discussion looks beyond the opportunity for knowledge development of content, pedagogy and technology as components of TPACK towards the interaction between those three components. Implications for practice are also discussed. In today’s technology infused classrooms it is within the realms of teacher educators, practising teaching and pre-service teachers explore and address effective practices using technology to enhance learning

Towards the 3D Web with Open Simulator

    Get PDF
Continuing advances and reduced costs in computational power, graphics processors and network bandwidth have led to 3D immersive multi-user virtual worlds becoming increasingly accessible while offering an improved and engaging Quality of Experience. At the same time the functionality of the World Wide Web continues to expand alongside the computing infrastructure it runs on and pages can now routinely accommodate many forms of interactive multimedia components as standard features - streaming video for example. Inevitably there is an emerging expectation that the Web will expand further to incorporate immersive 3D environments. This is exciting because humans are well adapted to operating in 3D environments and it is challenging because existing software and skill sets are focused around competencies in 2D Web applications. Open Simulator (OpenSim) is a freely available open source tool-kit that empowers users to create and deploy their own 3D environments in the same way that anyone can create and deploy a Web site. Its characteristics can be seen as a set of references as to how the 3D Web could be instantiated. This paper describes experiments carried out with OpenSim to better understand network and system issues, and presents experience in using OpenSim to develop and deliver applications for education and cultural heritage. Evaluation is based upon observations of these applications in use and measurements of systems both in the lab and in the wild.Postprin
