    Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey

    Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

    Networked PID control design : a pseudo-probabilistic robust approach

    Networked Control Systems (NCS) are feedback/feed-forward control systems where control components (sensors, actuators and controllers) are distributed across a common communication network. In NCS, there exist network-induced random delays in each channel. This paper proposes a method to compensate the effects of these delays for the design and tuning of PID controllers. The control design is formulated as a constrained optimization problem and the controller stability and robustness criteria are incorporated as design constraints. The design is based on a polytopic description of the system using a Poisson pdf distribution of the delay. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method

    An artificial immune systems based predictive modelling approach for the multi-objective elicitation of Mamdani fuzzy rules: a special application to modelling alloys

    In this paper, a systematic multi-objective Mamdani fuzzy modeling approach is proposed, which can be viewed as an extended version of the previously proposed Singleton fuzzy modeling paradigm. A set of new back-error propagation (BEP) updating formulas are derived so that they can replace the old set developed in the singleton version. With the substitution, the extension to the multi-objective Mamdani Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems (FRBS) is almost endemic. Due to the carefully chosen output membership functions, the inference and the defuzzification methods, a closed form integral can be deducted for the defuzzification method, which ensures the efficiency of the developed Mamdani FRBS. Some important factors, such as the variable length coding scheme and the rule alignment, are also discussed. Experimental results for a real data set from the steel industry suggest that the proposed approach is capable of eliciting not only accurate but also transparent FRBS with good generalization ability

    Comparison of PID methods for networked control systems

    This work presents significant developments in Networked Control Systems based on PID, Internal Model Control and Smith Predictor algorithms. The main purpose of this research paper is to study the performance and robustness offered by these control design methods in handling the challenging control problem encountered with systems subject to time-varying delays and dropouts. It is expected that proposed design methods achieve design requirements such as margins of robustness, performance criterions and stability conditions while the simplicity and flexibility of the controller are preferred. Performance of these controllers is evaluated and extensive simulations of these methods are presented using Matlab TrueTime toolbox

    Optimal excitation controllers, and location and sizing of energy storage for all-electric ship power system

    The Navy\u27s future all-electric ship power system is based on the integrated power system (IPS) architecture consisting of power generation, propulsion systems, hydrodynamics, and DC zonal electric distribution system (DC-ZEDS). To improve the power quality, optimal excitation systems, and optimal location and sizing of energy storage modules (ESMs) are studied. In this dissertation, clonal selection algorithm (CSA) based controller design is firstly introduced. CSA based controller design shows better exploitation ability with relatively long search time when compared to a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based design. Furthermore, \u27optimal\u27 small population PSO (SPPSO) based excitation controller is introduced. Parameter sensitivity analysis shows that the parameters of SPPSO for regeneration can be fined tuned to achieve fast optimal controller design, and thus exploiting SPPSO features for problem of particles get trapped in local minima and long search time. Furthermore, artificial immune system based concepts are used to develop adaptive and coordinated excitation controllers for generators on ship IPS. The computational approaches for excitation controller designs have been implemented on digital signal processors interfaced to an actual laboratory synchronous machine, and to multimachine electric ship power systems simulated on a real-time digital simulator. Finally, an approach to evaluate ESM location and sizing is proposed using three metrics: quality of service, survivability and cost.     In this present year, engineers have been researching and inventing to get the optimum of less emission in every vehicle for a better environmental friendly. Diesel engines are known reusing of the exhaust gas in order to reduce the exhaust emissions such as NOx that contribute high factors in the pollution. In this paper, we have conducted a study that EGR instalment in the vehicle can be good as it helps to prevent highly amount of toxic gas formation, which NOx level can be lowered. But applying the EGR it can lead to more cooling and more space which will affect in terms of the costing. Throughout the research, fuelling in the engine affects the EGR producing less emission. Other than that, it contributes to the less of performance efficiency when vehicle load is less

    A data-driven model inversion approach to cancer immunotherapy control

    A novel data-driven control design approach for Multiple Input Multiple Output nonlinear systems is proposed in the paper, relying on the identification of a polynomial prediction model of the system to control and its on-line inversion. A simulated study is then presented, concerning the design of a control strategy for cancer immunotherapy. This study shows that the proposed approach may be quite effective in treating cancer patients, and may give results similar to (or perhaps better than) those provided by “standard” methods. The fundamental difference is that “standard” methods are typically based on the unrealistic assumption that an accurate physiological model of the cancer-immune mechanism is avail- able; in the approach proposed here, the controller is designed without such a strong assumption

    Swarm Intelligence Autotune For Differential Drive Wheeled Mobile Robot

    Differential Drive Wheeled Mobile Robot (DDWMR) is a nonholonomic robot with constrained movement. Such constraint makes robot position control more difficult. A closed-loop control system such as PID can control robot position. However, DDWMR is a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output system. There will be many feedback gains to be tuned, and the wrong value will make the system unstable. Therefore this research proposes an offline autotune method to choose optimal feedback gain that minimizes a fitness function. The fitness function uses Integral Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE). These works propose to autotune feedback gain for DDWMR Jetbot, which implements a PI control system with six feedback gains. The methods used to tune the feedback gain are Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bird Swarm Algorithm (BSA). There are four different scenarios to do the autotune. The autotune result performance shows that those two methods can find an optimal gain to make the robot follow four different continuous trajectories without much trajectory deformation. PSO and BSA can do an autotune PI gain with six variables to minimize the Integral Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE)

    A robust controlling methodology for a grouting process

    The grouting technology is an effective and economic method in the grouting industry field. In this paper, a nonlinear model for the grouting dynamic process was established, and the controlling parameters were further modified through a robust method. Moreover, the grouting pressure system for the neural network was also modelled based on a sensitivity analysis algorithm, and in particular, the iterative learning algorithm and Lyapunov asymptotical theory. The results showed that such a robust controlling methodology was better than the normal manual operation method. The subsequent numerical simulations demonstrated that the tuning methodology could meet all the requirements for the grouting control with the maximum pressure variable in the range of 8.1%. The present study and the proposed method could be applied to various engineering projects and especially, to implement in the real control of damming grouting

    Bidirectional optimization of the melting spinning process

Copyright 2014 @ IEEE.A bidirectional optimizing approach for the melting spinning process based on an immune-enhanced neural network is proposed. The proposed bidirectional model can not only reveal the internal nonlinear relationship between the process configuration and the quality indices of the fibers as final product, but also provide a tool for engineers to develop new fiber products with expected quality specifications. A neural network is taken as the basis for the bidirectional model, and an immune component is introduced to enlarge the searching scope of the solution field so that the neural network has a larger possibility to find the appropriate and reasonable solution, and the error of prediction can therefore be eliminated. The proposed intelligent model can also help to determine what kind of process configuration should be made in order to produce satisfactory fiber products. To make the proposed model practical to the manufacturing, a software platform is developed. Simulation results show that the proposed model can eliminate the approximation error raised by the neural network-based optimizing model, which is due to the extension of focusing scope by the artificial immune mechanism. Meanwhile, the proposed model with the corresponding software can conduct optimization in two directions, namely, the process optimization and category development, and the corresponding results outperform those with an ordinary neural network-based intelligent model.
