Generally, a reliable method of analyzing the quality of experience is through the subjective method, which is time consuming, lacks usability, lacks repeatability in real-time and near real-time. Another method is the objective measurement that aims at predicting the subjective measurement based on the estimated mean opinion score. Therefore, this study adopted the objective measurement by implementing a quality of experience framework, which employed predictive analytics techniques to analyze the mobile internet user experience dataset gathered through the mobile network. The predictive analytics employed the use of multiple regression, neural network, decision trees, random forest, and decision forest to predict the mobile internet perceived quality of experience. Result from the study shows that decision forests performs better than other algorithms used for the predictive analytics. In addition, the result indicates that the predictive analytics can be used to enhance the allocation of network resources based on location and time constituted in the dataset

One of the goals of an operator is to improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) of a client in networks where Over-the-top (OTT) content is being delivered. The appearance of services like YouTube, Netflix or Twitch, where in the first case it contains more than 300 hours of video per minute in the platform, brings issues to the managed data networks that already exist, as well as challenges to fix them. Video traffic corresponds to 75% of the whole transmitted data on the Internet. This way, not only the Internet did become the ’de facto’ video transmission path, but also the general data traffic continues to exponentially increase, due to the desire to consume more content. This thesis presents two model proposals and architecture that aim to improve the users’ quality of experience, by predicting the amount of video in advance liable of being prefetched, as a way to optimize the delivery efficiency where the quality of service cannot be guaranteed. The prefetch is done in the clients’ closest cache server. For that, an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used, where through a subjective method of attribute comparison, and from the application of a weighted function on the measured quality of service metrics, the amount of prefetch is achieved. Besides this method, artificial intelligence techniques are also taken into account. With neural networks, there is an attempt of selflearning with the behavior of OTT networks with more than 14.000 hours of video consumption under different quality conditions, to try to estimate the experience felt and maximize it, without the normal service delivery degradation. At last, both methods are evaluated and a proof of concept is made with users in a high speed train.

Video streaming applications currently dominate Internet traffic. Particularly, HTTP Adaptive Streaming ( HAS) has emerged as the dominant standard for streaming videos over the best-effort Internet, thanks to its capability of matching the video quality to the available network resources. In HAS, the video client is equipped with a heuristic that dynamically decides the most suitable quality to stream the content, based on information such as the perceived network bandwidth or the video player buffer status. The goal of this heuristic is to optimize the quality as perceived by the user, the so-called Quality of Experience (QoE). Despite the many advantages brought by the adaptive streaming principle, optimizing users' QoE is far from trivial. Current heuristics are still suboptimal when sudden bandwidth drops occur, especially in wireless environments, thus leading to freezes in the video playout, the main factor influencing users' QoE. This issue is aggravated in case of live events, where the player buffer has to be kept as small as possible in order to reduce the playout delay between the user and the live signal. In light of the above, in recent years, several works have been proposed with the aim of extending the classical purely client-based structure of adaptive video streaming, in order to fully optimize users' QoE. In this article, a survey is presented of research works on this topic together with a classification based on where the optimization takes place. This classification goes beyond client-based heuristics to investigate the usage of server-and network-assisted architectures and of new application and transport layer protocols. In addition, we outline the major challenges currently arising in the field of multimedia delivery, which are going to be of extreme relevance in future years

Nowadays, the Internet is considered an essential good, due to the fact that there is a need to communicate, but also to access and share information. With the increasing use of the Internet, allied with the increased bandwidth provided by telecommunication operators, it has created conditions for the increase of Over-the-Top (OTT) Multimedia Services, demonstrated by the huge success of Net ix and Youtube. The OTT service encompasses the delivery of video and audio through the Internet without direct control of telecommunication operators, presenting an attractive low-cost and pro table proposal. Although the OTT delivery is captivating, it has some limitations. In order to increase the number of clients and keep the high Quality of Experience (QoE) standards, an enhanced architecture for content distribution network is needed. Thus, the enhanced architecture needs to provide a good quality for the user, in an e cient and scalable way, supporting the requirements imposed by future mobile networks. This dissertation aims to approach the content distribution in wireless networks, through a distributed cache model among the several access points, thus increasing the cache size and decreasing the load on the upstream servers. The proposed architecture was tested in three di erent scenarios: the consumer is at home and it is considered that it has a xed access, the consumer is mobile between several access points in the street, the consumer is in a high speed train. Several solutions were evaluated, such as Redis2, Cachelot and Memcached to serve as caches, along with the evaluation of several proxies server in order to ful ll the required features. Also, it was tested two distributed algorithms, namely the Consistent and Rendezvous Hashing. Moreover, in this dissertation it was integrated a prefetching mechanism, which consists of inserting the content in caches before being requested by the consumers. At the end, it was veri ed that the distributed model with prefetching improved the consumers QoE as well as it reduced the load on the upstream servers

The general use of Internet access and user equipments, such as smartphones, tablets and personal computers, is creating a new wave of video content consumption. In the past two decades, the Television broadcasting industry went through several evolutions and changes, evolving from analog to digital distribution, standard definition to high definition TV-channels, form the IPTV method of distribution to the latest set of technologies in content distribution, OTT. The IPTV technology introduced features that changed the passive role of the client to an active one, revolutionizing the way users consume TV content. Thus, the clients’ habits started to shape the services offered, leading to an anywhere and anytime offer of video content. OTT video delivery is a reflection of those habits, meeting the users’ desire, introducing several benefits discussed in this work over the previous technologies. However, the OTT type of delivery poses several challenges in terms of scalability and threatens the Telecommunications Operators business model, because OTT companies use the Telcos infrastructure for free. Consequently, Telecommunications Operators must prepare their infrastructure for future demand while offering new services to stay competitive. This dissertation aims to contribute with insights on what infrastructure changes a Telecommunications Operator must perform with a proposed bandwidth forecasting model. The results obtained from the forecast model paved the way to the proposed video content delivery method, which aims to improve users’ perceived Quality-of-Experience while optimizing load balancing decisions. The overall results show an improvement of users’ experience using the proposed method.

Contribution to quality of user experience provision over wireless networks

The widespread expansion of wireless networks has brought new attractive possibilities to end users. In addition to the mobility capabilities provided by unwired devices, it is worth remarking the easy configuration process that a user has to follow to gain connectivity through a wireless network. Furthermore, the increasing bandwidth provided by the IEEE 802.11 family has made possible accessing to high-demanding services such as multimedia communications. Multimedia traffic has unique characteristics that make it greatly vulnerable against network impairments, such as packet losses, delay, or jitter. Voice over IP (VoIP) communications, video-conference, video-streaming, etc., are examples of these high-demanding services that need to meet very strict requirements in order to be served with acceptable levels of quality. Accomplishing these tough requirements will become extremely important during the next years, taking into account that consumer video traffic will be the predominant traffic in the Internet during the next years. In wired systems, these requirements are achieved by using Quality of Service (QoS) techniques, such as Differentiated Services (DiffServ), traffic engineering, etc. However, employing these methodologies in wireless networks is not that simple as many other factors impact on the quality of the provided service, e.g., fading, interferences, etc. Focusing on the IEEE 802.11g standard, which is the most extended technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), it defines two different architecture schemes. On one hand, the infrastructure mode consists of a central point, which manages the network, assuming network controlling tasks such as IP assignment, routing, accessing security, etc. The rest of the nodes composing the network act as hosts, i.e., they send and receive traffic through the central point. On the other hand, the IEEE 802.11 ad-hoc configuration mode is less extended than the infrastructure one. Under this scheme, there is not a central point in the network, but all the nodes composing the network assume both host and router roles, which permits the quick deployment of a network without a pre-existent infrastructure. This type of networks, so called Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs), presents interesting characteristics for situations when the fast deployment of a communication system is needed, e.g., tactics networks, disaster events, or temporary networks. The benefits provided by MANETs are varied, including high mobility possibilities provided to the nodes, network coverage extension, or network reliability avoiding single points of failure. The dynamic nature of these networks makes the nodes to react to topology changes as fast as possible. Moreover, as aforementioned, the transmission of multimedia traffic entails real-time constraints, necessary to provide these services with acceptable levels of quality. For those reasons, efficient routing protocols are needed, capable of providing enough reliability to the network and with the minimum impact to the quality of the service flowing through the nodes. Regarding quality measurements, the current trend is estimating what the end user actually perceives when consuming the service. This paradigm is called Quality of user Experience (QoE) and differs from the traditional Quality of Service (QoS) approach in the human perspective given to quality estimations. In order to measure the subjective opinion that a user has about a given service, different approaches can be taken. The most accurate methodology is performing subjective tests in which a panel of human testers rates the quality of the service under evaluation. This approach returns a quality score, so-called Mean Opinion Score (MOS), for the considered service in a scale 1 - 5. This methodology presents several drawbacks such as its high expenses and the impossibility of performing tests at real time. For those reasons, several mathematical models have been presented in order to provide an estimation of the QoE (MOS) reached by different multimedia services In this thesis, the focus is on evaluating and understanding the multimedia-content transmission-process in wireless networks from a QoE perspective. To this end, firstly, the QoE paradigm is explored aiming at understanding how to evaluate the quality of a given multimedia service. Then, the influence of the impairments introduced by the wireless transmission channel on the multimedia communications is analyzed. Besides, the functioning of different WLAN schemes in order to test their suitability to support highly demanding traffic such as the multimedia transmission is evaluated. Finally, as the main contribution of this thesis, new mechanisms or strategies to improve the quality of multimedia services distributed over IEEE 802.11 networks are presented. Concretely, the distribution of multimedia services over ad-hoc networks is deeply studied. Thus, a novel opportunistic routing protocol, so-called JOKER (auto-adJustable Opportunistic acK/timEr-based Routing) is presented. This proposal permits better support to multimedia services while reducing the energy consumption in comparison with the standard ad-hoc routing protocols.Universidad Politécnica de CartagenaPrograma Oficial de Doctorado en Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicacione
