    On Role Logic

    We present role logic, a notation for describing properties of relational structures in shape analysis, databases, and knowledge bases. We construct role logic using the ideas of de Bruijn's notation for lambda calculus, an encoding of first-order logic in lambda calculus, and a simple rule for implicit arguments of unary and binary predicates. The unrestricted version of role logic has the expressive power of first-order logic with transitive closure. Using a syntactic restriction on role logic formulas, we identify a natural fragment RL^2 of role logic. We show that the RL^2 fragment has the same expressive power as two-variable logic with counting C^2 and is therefore decidable. We present a translation of an imperative language into the decidable fragment RL^2, which allows compositional verification of programs that manipulate relational structures.     OCL2Trigger: Deriving active mechanisms for relational databases using Model-Driven Architecture

Our main contribution to this work is to provide a complete approach for deriving the active mechanisms for Relational Databases from the specification of the integrity constraints by using OCL. This approach is designed in accordance with the MDA approach which consists of transforming the specified OCL clauses into a class diagram into SQL:2003 standard triggers, then transforming the standard triggers into target DBMS triggers. We believe that developing triggers and plugging them into a given model is insufficient because the behaviour of such triggers is invisible to the developers, and therefore not controllable. For this reason, a DBMS trigger verification model is used in our approach, in order to ensure the termination of trigger execution.     Using formal metamodels to check consistency of functional views in information systems specification

    UML notations require adaptation for applications such as Information Systems (IS). Thus we have defined IS-UML. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we propose an extension to this language to deal with functional aspects of IS. We use two views to specify IS transactions: the first one is defined as a combination of behavioural UML diagrams (collaboration and state diagrams), and the second one is based on the definition of specific classes of an extended class diagram. The final objective of the article is to consider consistency issues between the various diagrams of an IS-UML specification. In common with other UML languages, we use a metamodel to define IS-UML. We use class diagrams to summarize the metamodel structure and a formal language, B, for the full metamodel. This allows us to formally express consistency checks and mapping rules between specific metamodel concepts. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.

    This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.

    The exploration of a category theory-based virtual Geometrical product specification system for design and manufacturing

    In order to ensure quality of products and to facilitate global outsourcing, almost all the so-called “world-class” manufacturing companies nowadays are applying various tools and methods to maintain the consistency of a product’s characteristics throughout its manufacturing life cycle. Among these, for ensuring the consistency of the geometric characteristics, a tolerancing language − the Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) has been widely adopted to precisely transform the functional requirements from customers into manufactured workpieces expressed as tolerance notes in technical drawings. Although commonly acknowledged by industrial users as one of the most successful efforts in integrating existing manufacturing life-cycle standards, current GPS implementations and software packages suffer from several drawbacks in their practical use, possibly the most significant, the difficulties in inferring the data for the “best” solutions. The problem stemmed from the foundation of data structures and knowledge-based system design. This indicates that there need to be a “new” software system to facilitate GPS applications. The presented thesis introduced an innovative knowledge-based system − the VirtualGPS − that provides an integrated GPS knowledge platform based on a stable and efficient database structure with knowledge generation and accessing facilities. The system focuses on solving the intrinsic product design and production problems by acting as a virtual domain expert through translating GPS standards and rules into the forms of computerized expert advices and warnings. Furthermore, this system can be used as a training tool for young and new engineers to understand the huge amount of GPS standards in a relative “quicker” manner. The thesis started with a detailed discussion of the proposed categorical modelling mechanism, which has been devised based on the Category Theory. It provided a unified mechanism for knowledge acquisition and representation, knowledge-based system design, and database schema modelling. As a core part for assessing this knowledge-based system, the implementation of the categorical Database Management System (DBMS) is also presented in this thesis. The focus then moved on to demonstrate the design and implementation of the proposed VirtualGPS system. The tests and evaluations of this system were illustrated in Chapter 6. Finally, the thesis summarized the contributions to knowledge in Chapter 7. After thoroughly reviewing the project, the conclusions reached construe that the III entire VirtualGPS system was designed and implemented to conform to Category Theory and object-oriented programming rules. The initial tests and performance analyses show that the system facilitates the geometric product manufacturing operations and benefits the manufacturers and engineers alike from function designs, to a manufacturing and verification

    Integrating intelligent methodological and tutoring assistance in a CASE platform: The PANDORA experience

    Database Design discipline involves so different aspects as conceptual and logical modelling knowledge or domain understanding. That implies a great effort to carry out the real world abstraction task and represent it through a data model. CASE tools emerge in order to automating the database development process. These platforms try to help to the database designer in different database design phases. Nevertheless, this tools are frequently mere diagrammers and do not carry completely out the design methodology that they are supposed to support; furthermore, they do not offer intelligent methodological advice to novice designers. This paper introduces the PANDORA tool (acronym of Platform for Database Development and Learning via Internet) that is being developed in a research project which tries to mitigate some of the deficiencies observed in several CASE tools, defining methods and techniques for database development which are useful for students and practitioners. Specifically, this work is focused on two PANDORA components: Conceptual Modelling and Learning Support subsystems

    BIM semantic-enrichment for built heritage representation

    In the built heritage context, BIM has shown difficulties in representing and managing the large and complex knowledge related to non-geometrical aspects of the heritage. Within this scope, this paper focuses on a domain-specific semantic-enrichment of BIM methodology, aimed at fulfilling semantic representation requirements of built heritage through Semantic Web technologies. To develop this semantic-enriched BIM approach, this research relies on the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base created through information ontologies. The result is knowledge base system - and a prototypal platform - that enhances semantic representation capabilities of BIM application to architectural heritage processes. It solves the issue of knowledge formalization in cultural heritage informative models, favouring a deeper comprehension and interpretation of all the building aspects. Its open structure allows future research to customize, scale and adapt the knowledge base different typologies of artefacts and heritage activities

One of them is the automatization of database design process using CASE tools. Frequently, these tools do not completely support all phases of database analysis and the design methodology that they propose. Therefore, we propose to incorporate new features to these tools enhancing them and solving some of the modelling problems. In this paper we present an add-in module that aims to generate triggers for preserving the multiplicity constraints of a conceptual scheme in the transformation to a relational scheme.
