Design and semantics of form and movement
Contemporary cognitive science and neuroscience offer us some rather precise insights into the mechanisms that are responsible for certain body movements. In this paper, we argue that this knowledge may be highly relevant to the design of meaningful movement and behavior, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Taking the example of a leech, we investigate and identify the basic principles of "embodied movement" that govern the motion of this simple creature, and argue that the development and adoption of a design methodology that incorporates these principles right from the start, may be the best way forward, if one wants to realize and design movements with certain desirable characteristics

Improving Recall of Browsing Sets in Image Retrieval from a Semiotics Perspective
The purpose of dissertation is to utilize connotative messages for enhancing image retrieval and browsing. By adopting semiotics as a theoretical tool, this study explores problems of image retrieval and proposes an image retrieval model. The semiotics approach conceptually demonstrates that: 1) a fundamental reason for the dissonance between retrieved images and user needs is representation of connotative messages, and 2) the image retrieval model which makes use of denotative index terms is able to facilitate users to browse connotatively related images effectively even when the users' needs are potentially expressed in the form of denotative query. Two experiments are performed for verifying the semiotic-based image retrieval model and evaluating the effectiveness of the model. As data sources, 5,199 records are collected from Artefacts Canada: Humanities by Canadian Heritage Information Network, and the candidate terms of connotation and denotation are extracted from Art & Architecture Thesaurus. The first experiment, by applying term association measures, verifies that the connotative messages of an image can be derived from denotative messages of the image. The second experiment reveals that the association thesaurus which is constructed based on the associations between connotation and denotation facilitates assigning connotative terms to image documents. In addition, the result of relevant judgments presents that the association thesaurus improves the relative recall of retrieved image documents as well as the relative recall of browsing sets. This study concludes that the association thesaurus indicating associations between connotation and denotation is able to improve the accessibility of the connotative messages. The results of the study are hoped to contribute to the conceptual knowledge of image retrieval by providing understandings of connotative messages within an image and to the practical design of image retrieval system by proposing an association thesaurus which can supplement the limitations of the current content-based image retrieval systems (CBIR)
Polysemy in Advertising
The article reviews the conceptual foundations of advertising polysemy – the occurrence of different interpretations for the same advertising message. We discuss how disciplines as diverse as psychology, semiotics and literary theory have dealt with the issue of polysemy, and provide translations and integration among these multiple perspectives. From such review we draw recurrent themes to foster future research in the area and to show how seemingly opposed methodological and theoretical perspectives complement and extend each other. Implications for advertising research and practice are discussed.Advertising;Polysemy;Semiotics
Colonial imagery in responsible travel dvertisement, a critique from a postcolonial perspective
This master's thesis analyses a selection of images used to advertise outbound responsible travel to
various destinations in Africa. It shows that in the advertisement of the selected destinations
colonial imagery and texts are emphasised. Colonial imagery is reproduced in a binary
representation model of the "self" and the "other" that not only supports the criticised creation of
knowledge of the Global South but also restores racism as an ideology of dominance. To
demonstrate this, images and text material are analysed with regard to findings of postcolonial
theory. It becomes apparent that contemporary outbound responsible travel agencies continue
colonial ideas and power relations. It is thus determined that there is a gap between the declared
aims of responsible tourism agencies and the single-perspective and derogatory meanings the
images, they use to advertise their products, carry. Accordingly, recommendations for DMOs
(Destination Management Organisations) and decision makers that are involved in the promotion of
global travel are developed.

A Conceptual Framework of Designer Responses in Designing Furniture Application from Upcycled Plastic Materials
Understanding the design should be an emotion's role in various aspects of design, represent not only this research goal for research purpose but also for the successfulness of any design that has good philosophy. However, upcycling the solid waste plastic material to create another creative object could reduce the pollution issue and at the same time, support the awareness sustainability campaign. An underlying objective of this research understudy is to investigate and develop furniture application design, which will respond from designer and their experience. This is to contribute guidelines for the future development of new alternative material for furniture applications.

Representation of national identity in Malaysian state mosque built form as a socio-cultural product
The formation of national identity is the essence for a multi-racial country like Malaysia because it can strengthen national solidarity, create a common aspiration, and sustain the continuity of a historical heritage with multiple ethnicity and background. Nevertheless, the characteristics of this national identity is still not fully dealt with from an architectural aspect. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the problem of national architectural identity in Malaysia. This is vital to uncover the resulting design principles with national architectural identity characteristics by referencing to three typologies of local state mosque as case study. The finding outlines that there are six architectural principles that influence the formation of national identity. These are the understanding of built form detail elements, materials usage, local style composition and expression, application of organic theory, designing a regionalistic articulation of space and form as well as an understanding of democratic values form to reflect the characteristics of national identity. These established referential guideline design on national identity is of benefit for future designers, builders, developer and related authority to produce built form that symbolizes nation political values as well as responsive to the existing social culture context
A Semiotic-Cognitive Analysis Of Selected Arab Spring Political Cartoons (2011-2013)
This study analyzed the responses of twenty five Arab postgraduates in USM, Penang, Malaysia in relation to the selected Arab Spring political cartoons from semiotic-cognitive perspectives. A total of five Arab Spring cartoon panels from the year 2011 to 2013 are selected from electronic newspapers and websites, as they reflect Arab Spring events progressively to investigate their denotative and connotative meanings, patterns of interpretations and plurality of meaning. This study utilizes Barthes‘ (1977) visual semiotics and Moriarty‘s (1997; 2005) application of Peirce‘s (1933; 1994) cognitive inferences to investigate visuals Semiotically. This study identified five main themes from the responses; negative intention towards Arab Spring, manifestation of Arab peoples‘ struggle with democracy, the powerful of social media, the reluctant international community offers the Syrian political crisis no compromising solution, and Arab Spring freedom achievement
