Location-free Spectrum Cartography
Spectrum cartography constructs maps of metrics such as channel gain or
received signal power across a geographic area of interest using spatially
distributed sensor measurements. Applications of these maps include network
planning, interference coordination, power control, localization, and cognitive
radios to name a few. Since existing spectrum cartography techniques require
accurate estimates of the sensor locations, their performance is drastically
impaired by multipath affecting the positioning pilot signals, as occurs in
indoor or dense urban scenarios. To overcome such a limitation, this paper
introduces a novel paradigm for spectrum cartography, where estimation of
spectral maps relies on features of these positioning signals rather than on
location estimates. Specific learning algorithms are built upon this approach
and offer a markedly improved estimation performance than existing approaches
relying on localization, as demonstrated by simulation studies in indoor

Hardware Development of an Ultra-Wideband System for High Precision Localization Applications
A precise localization system in an indoor environment has been developed. The developed system is based on transmitting and receiving picosecond pulses and carrying out a complete narrow-pulse, signal detection and processing scheme in the time domain. The challenges in developing such a system include: generating ultra wideband (UWB) pulses, pulse dispersion due to antennas, modeling of complex propagation channels with severe multipath effects, need for extremely high sampling rates for digital processing, synchronization between the tag and receivers’ clocks, clock jitter, local oscillator (LO) phase noise, frequency offset between tag and receivers’ LOs, and antenna phase center variation. For such a high precision system with mm or even sub-mm accuracy, all these effects should be accounted for and minimized.
In this work, we have successfully addressed many of the above challenges and developed a stand-alone system for positioning both static and dynamic targets with approximately 2 mm and 6 mm of 3-D accuracy, respectively. The results have exceeded the state of the art for any commercially available UWB positioning system and are considered a great milestone in developing such technology. My contributions include the development of a picosecond pulse generator, an extremely wideband omni-directional antenna, a highly directive UWB receiving antenna with low phase center variation, an extremely high data rate sampler, and establishment of a non-synchronized UWB system architecture. The developed low cost sampler, for example, can be easily utilized to sample narrow pulses with up to 1000 GS/s while the developed antennas can cover over 6 GHz bandwidth with minimal pulse distortion.
The stand-alone prototype system is based on tracking a target using 4-6 base stations and utilizing a triangulation scheme to find its location in space. Advanced signal processing algorithms based on first peak and leading edge detection have been developed and extensively evaluated to achieve high accuracy 3-D localization. 1D, 2D and 3D experiments have been carried out and validated using an optical reference system which provides better than 0.3 mm 3-D accuracy. Such a high accuracy wireless localization system should have a great impact on the operating room of the future
Investigations of 5G localization with positioning reference signals
TDOA is an user-assisted or network-assisted technique, in which the user equipment calculates the time of arrival of precise positioning reference signals conveyed by mobile base stations and provides information about the measured time of arrival estimates in the direction of the position server. Using multilateration grounded on the TDOA measurements of the PRS received from at least three base stations and known location of these base stations, the location server determines the position of the user equipment.
Different types of factors are responsible for the positioning accuracy in TDOA method, such as the sample rate, the bandwidth, network deployment, the properties of PRS, signal propagation condition, etc. About 50 meters positioning is good for the 4G/LTE users, whereas 5G requires an accuracy less than a meter for outdoor and indoor users. Noteworthy improvements in positioning accuracy can be achievable with the help of redesigning the PRS in 5G technology.
The accuracy for the localization has been studied for different sampling rates along with different algorithms. High accuracy TDOA with 5G positioning reference signal (PRS) for sample rate and bandwidth hasn’t been taken into consideration yet. The key goal of the thesis is to compare and assess the impact of different sampling rates and different bandwidths of PRS on the 5G positioning accuracy.
By performing analysis with variable bandwidths of PRS in resource blocks and comparing all the analyses with different bandwidths of PRS in resource blocks, it is undeniable that there is a meaningful decrease in the RMSE and significant growth in the SNR. The higher bandwidth of PRS in resource blocks brings higher SNR while the RMSE of positioning errors also decreases with higher bandwidth. Also, the number of PRS in resource blocks provides lower SNR with higher RMSE values. The analysis with different bandwidths of PRS in resource blocks reveals keeping the RMSE value lower than a meter each time with different statistics is a positivity of the research.
The positioning accuracy also analyzed with different sample sizes. With an increased sample size, a decrease in the root mean square error and a crucial increase in the SNR was observed.
From this thesis investigation, it is inevitable to accomplish that two different analyses (sample size and bandwidth) done in a different way with the targeted output. A bandwidth of 38.4 MHz and sample size N = 700 required to achieve below 1m accuracy with SNR of 47.04 dB
A Review of Radio Frequency Based Localization for Aerial and Ground Robots with 5G Future Perspectives
Efficient localization plays a vital role in many modern applications of
Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) and Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which would
contribute to improved control, safety, power economy, etc. The ubiquitous 5G
NR (New Radio) cellular network will provide new opportunities for enhancing
localization of UAVs and UGVs. In this paper, we review the radio frequency
(RF) based approaches for localization. We review the RF features that can be
utilized for localization and investigate the current methods suitable for
Unmanned vehicles under two general categories: range-based and fingerprinting.
The existing state-of-the-art literature on RF-based localization for both UAVs
and UGVs is examined, and the envisioned 5G NR for localization enhancement,
and the future research direction are explored
LocaRDS: A Localization Reference Data Set
The use of wireless signals for the purposes of localization enables a host of applications relating to the determination and verification of the positions of network participants ranging from radar to satellite navigation. Consequently, this has been a longstanding interest of theoretical and practical research in mobile networks and many solutions have been proposed in the scientific literature. However, it is hard to assess the performance of these in the real world and, more importantly, to compare their advantages and disadvantages in a controlled scientific manner. With this work, we attempt to improve the current state of art methodology in localization research and to place it on a solid scientific grounding for future investigations. Concretely, we developed LocaRDS, an open reference data set of real-world crowdsourced flight data featuring more than 222 million measurements from over 50 million transmissions recorded by 323 sensors. We demonstrate how we can verify the quality of LocaRDS measurements so that it can be used to test, analyze and directly compare different localization methods. Finally, we provide an example implementation for the aircraft localization problem and a discussion of possible metrics for use with LocaRDS
Positioning and Sensing System Based on Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband Technology
Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) is a wireless carrier communication technology using nanosecond non-sinusoidal narrow pulses to transmit data. Therefore, the IR-UWB signal has a high resolution in the time domain and is suitable for high-precision positioning or sensing systems in IIoT scenarios. This thesis designs and implements a high-precision positioning system and a contactless sensing system based on the high temporal resolution characteristics of IR-UWB technology. The feasibility of the two applications in the IIoT is evaluated, which provides a reference for human-machine-thing positioning and human-machine interaction sensing technology in large smart factories. By analyzing the commonly used positioning algorithms in IR-UWB systems, this thesis designs an IRUWB relative positioning system based on the time of flight algorithm. The system uses the IR-UWB transceiver modules to obtain the distance data and calculates the relative position between the two individuals through the proposed relative positioning algorithm. An improved algorithm is proposed to simplify the system hardware, reducing the three serial port modules used in the positioning system to one. Based on the time of flight algorithm, this thesis also implements a contactless gesture sensing system with IR-UWB. The IR-UWB signal is sparsified by downsampling, and then the feature information of the signal is obtained by level-crossing sampling. Finally, a spiking neural network is used as the recognition algorithm to classify hand gestures
