An ant colony optimization approach for maximizing the lifetime of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks
Maximizing the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a challenging problem. Although some methods exist to address the problem in homogeneous WSNs, research on this problem in heterogeneous WSNs have progressed at a slow pace. Inspired by the promising performance of ant colony optimization (ACO) to solve combinatorial problems, this paper proposes an ACO-based approach that can maximize the lifetime of heterogeneous WSNs. The methodology is based on finding the maximum number of disjoint connected covers that satisfy both sensing coverage and network connectivity. A construction graph is designed with each vertex denoting the assignment of a device in a subset. Based on pheromone and heuristic information, the ants seek an optimal path on the construction graph to maximize the number of connected covers. The pheromone serves as a metaphor for the search experiences in building connected covers. The heuristic information is used to reflect the desirability of device assignments. A local search procedure is designed to further improve the search efficiency. The proposed approach has been applied to a variety of heterogeneous WSNs. The results show that the approach is effective and efficient in finding high-quality solutions for maximizing the lifetime of heterogeneous WSNs
Performance and area optimization for reliable FPGA-based shifter design
This thesis addresses the problem of implementing reliable FPGA-based shifters. An FPGA-based design requires optimization between performance and resource utilization, and an effective verification methodology to validate design behavior. The FPGA-based implementation of a large shifter design is restricted by an I/O resource bottleneck. The verification of the design behavior presents a further challenge due to the \u27black-box\u27 nature of FPGAs. To tackle these design challenges, we propose a novel approach to implement FPGA-based shifters. The proposed design alleviates the I/O bottleneck while significantly reducing the logic resources required. This is achieved with a minimal increase in the design delay. The design is seamlessly scalable to a multi-FPGA chip setup to improve performance or to implement larger shifters. It is configured using assertion checkers for efficient design verification. The assertion-based design is further optimized to alleviate the performance degradation caused by the assertion checkers
Software-based fault-tolerant routing algorithm in multidimensional networks
Massively parallel computing systems are being built with hundreds or thousands of components such as nodes, links, memories, and connectors. The failure of a component in such systems will not only reduce the computational power but also alter the network's topology. The software-based fault-tolerant routing algorithm is a popular routing to achieve fault-tolerance capability in networks. This algorithm is initially proposed only for two dimensional networks (Suh et al., 2000). Since, higher dimensional networks have been widely employed in many contemporary massively parallel systems; this paper proposes an approach to extend this routing scheme to these indispensable higher dimensional networks. Deadlock and livelock freedom and the performance of presented algorithm, have been investigated for networks with different dimensionality and various fault regions. Cross-layer design of multi-hop wireless networks
MULTI -hop wireless networks are usually defined as a collection of nodes
equipped with radio transmitters, which not only have the capability to
communicate each other in a multi-hop fashion, but also to route each others’ data
packets. The distributed nature of such networks makes them suitable for a variety of
applications where there are no assumed reliable central entities, or controllers, and
may significantly improve the scalability issues of conventional single-hop wireless
networks.
This Ph.D. dissertation mainly investigates two aspects of the research issues
related to the efficient multi-hop wireless networks design, namely: (a) network
protocols and (b) network management, both in cross-layer design paradigms to
ensure the notion of service quality, such as quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh
networks (WMNs) for backhaul applications and quality of information (QoI) in
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sensing tasks. Throughout the presentation of
this Ph.D. dissertation, different network settings are used as illustrative examples,
however the proposed algorithms, methodologies, protocols, and models are not
restricted in the considered networks, but rather have wide applicability.
First, this dissertation proposes a cross-layer design framework integrating
a distributed proportional-fair scheduler and a QoS routing algorithm, while using
WMNs as an illustrative example. The proposed approach has significant performance
gain compared with other network protocols. Second, this dissertation proposes
a generic admission control methodology for any packet network, wired and
wireless, by modeling the network as a black box, and using a generic mathematical

function and Taylor expansion to capture the admission impact. Third, this dissertation
further enhances the previous designs by proposing a negotiation process,
to bridge the applications’ service quality demands and the resource management,
while using WSNs as an illustrative example. This approach allows the negotiation
among different service classes and WSN resource allocations to reach the optimal
operational status. Finally, the guarantees of the service quality are extended to
the environment of multiple, disconnected, mobile subnetworks, where the question
of how to maintain communications using dynamically controlled, unmanned data
ferries is investigated
Dynamic routing optimization using traffic prediction
In this dissertation, a new efficient routing maintenance algorithm, called Predicting of Future Load-based Routing (PFLR), is introduced for optimizing the routing performance in IP-based networks. The main idea of PFLR algorithm is combing the predicted link load with the current link load with an effective method to optimize the link weights and so reduce the network congestions. Another research objective is introducing a new efficient Traffic Engineering (TE) algorithm, called Prediction-based Decentralized Routing (PDR) algorithm, which is fully decentralized and self-organized approach
A dynamic ridesharing dispatch and idle vehicle repositioning strategy with integrated transit transfers
We propose a ridesharing strategy with integrated transit in which a private
on-demand mobility service operator may drop off a passenger directly
door-to-door, commit to dropping them at a transit station or picking up from a
transit station, or to both pickup and drop off at two different stations with
different vehicles. We study the effectiveness of online solution algorithms
for this proposed strategy. Queueing-theoretic vehicle dispatch and idle
vehicle relocation algorithms are customized for the problem. Several
experiments are conducted first with a synthetic instance to design and test
the effectiveness of this integrated solution method, the influence of
different model parameters, and measure the benefit of such cooperation.
Results suggest that rideshare vehicle travel time can drop by 40-60%
consistently while passenger journey times can be reduced by 50-60% when demand
is high. A case study of Long Island commuters to New York City (NYC) suggests
having the proposed operating strategy can substantially cut user journey times
and operating costs by up to 54% and 60% each for a range of 10-30 taxis
initiated per zone. This result shows that there are settings where such
service is highly warranted
