    Twelve Theses on Reactive Rules for the Web

    Reactivity, the ability to detect and react to events, is an essential functionality in many information systems. In particular, Web systems such as online marketplaces, adaptive (e.g., recommender) systems, and Web services, react to events such as Web page updates or data posted to a server. This article investigates issues of relevance in designing high-level programming languages dedicated to reactivity on the Web. It presents twelve theses on features desirable for a language of reactive rules tuned to programming Web and Semantic Web applications

    An Architectural Approach to Ensuring Consistency in Hierarchical Execution

    Hierarchical task decomposition is a method used in many agent systems to organize agent knowledge. This work shows how the combination of a hierarchy and persistent assertions of knowledge can lead to difficulty in maintaining logical consistency in asserted knowledge. We explore the problematic consequences of persistent assumptions in the reasoning process and introduce novel potential solutions. Having implemented one of the possible solutions, Dynamic Hierarchical Justification, its effectiveness is demonstrated with an empirical analysis

    Assessing the joint impact of DNAPL source-zone behavior and degradation products on the probabilistic characterization of human health risk

    The release of industrial contaminants into the subsurface has led to a rapid degradation of groundwater resources. Contamination caused by Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPLs) is particularly severe owing to their limited solubility, slow dissolution and in many cases high toxicity. A greater insight into how the DNAPL source zone behavior and the contaminant release towards the aquifer impact human health risk is crucial for an appropriate risk management. Risk analysis is further complicated by the uncertainty in aquifer properties and contaminant conditions. This study focuses on the impact of the DNAPL release mode on the human health risk propagation along the aquifer under uncertain conditions. Contaminant concentrations released from the source zone are described using a screening approach with a set of parameters representing several scenarios of DNAPL architecture. The uncertainty in the hydraulic properties is systematically accounted for by high-resolution Monte Carlo simulations. We simulate the release and the transport of the chlorinated solvent perchloroethylene and its carcinogenic degradation products in randomly heterogeneous porous media. The human health risk posed by the chemical mixture of these contaminants is characterized by the low-order statistics and the probability density function of common risk metrics. We show that the zone of high risk (hot spot) is independent of the DNAPL mass release mode, and that the risk amplitude is mostly controlled by heterogeneities and by the source zone architecture. The risk is lower and less uncertain when the source zone is formed mostly by ganglia than by pools. We also illustrate how the source zone efficiency (intensity of the water flux crossing the source zone) affects the risk posed by an exposure to the chemical mixture. Results display that high source zone efficiencies are counter-intuitively beneficial, decreasing the risk because of a reduction in the time available for the production of the highly toxic subspecies.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Ontology-Based Context-Aware Service Discovery for Pervasive Environments

    Existing service discovery protocols use a service matching process in order to offer services of interest to the clients. Potentially, the context information of the services and client can be used to improve the quality of service matching. To make use of context information in service matching, service discovery needs to address certain challenges. Firstly, it is required that the context information should have unambiguous representation. Secondly, the mobile devices should be able to disseminate context information seamlessly in the fixed network. And thirdly, dynamic nature of the context information should be taken into account. The proposed Context Aware Service Discovery (CASD) architecture deals with these challenges by means of an ontological representation and processing of context information, a concept of nomadic mobile context source and a mechanism of persistent service discovery respectively.     Elastic Business Process Management: State of the Art and Open Challenges for BPM in the Cloud

    With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are nowadays able to react rapidly to changing demands for computational resources. Not only individual applications can be hosted on virtual cloud infrastructures, but also complete business processes. This allows the realization of so-called elastic processes, i.e., processes which are carried out using elastic cloud resources. Despite the manifold benefits of elastic processes, there is still a lack of solutions supporting them. In this paper, we identify the state of the art of elastic Business Process Management with a focus on infrastructural challenges. We conceptualize an architecture for an elastic Business Process Management System and discuss existing work on scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring, decentralized coordination, and state management for elastic processes. Furthermore, we present two representative elastic Business Process Management Systems which are intended to counter these challenges. Based on our findings, we identify open issues and outline possible research directions for the realization of elastic processes and elastic Business Process Management.Comment: Please cite as: S.     Machining feature-based system for supporting step-compliant milling process

    STEP standards aims at setting up a standard description method for product data and providing a neutral exchanging mechanism that is independent of all the information processing systems for product information model. STEP Part 21 is the first implementation method from EXPRESS language and implemented successfully in CAD data. However, this text file consists of purely geometrical and topological data is hardly to be applied in machining process planning which requires machining features enriched data. The aim of this research is developing a new methodology to translate the EXPRESS language model of CAD STEP data into a new product data representation and enriched in machining features which is more beneficial to machining process planning. In this research, a target Database Management System (DBMS) was proposed for developing this system by using its fourth-generation tools that allow rapid development of applications through the provision of nonprocedural query language, reports generators, form generators, graphics generators, and application generators. The use of fourth-generation tools can improve productivity significantly and produce program that are easier to maintain. From this research, a new product data representation in a compact new table format is generated. Then this new product data representation has gone through a series of data enrichment process, such as normal face direction generation, edge convexity/concavity determination and machining features with transition feature recognition. Lastly, this new enriched product data representation is verified by generating to a new STEP standard data format which is according to ISO1030-224 standard format and providing an important part of solution for supporting STEP-compliant process planning and applications in milling process

    Quadrotor control for persistent surveillance of dynamic environments

    Thesis (M.S.)--Boston UniversityThe last decade has witnessed many advances in the field of small scale unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In particular, the quadrotor has attracted significant attention. Due to its ability to perform vertical takeoff and landing, and to operate in cluttered spaces, the quadrotor is utilized in numerous practical applications, such as reconnaissance and information gathering in unsafe or otherwise unreachable environments. This work considers the application of aerial surveillance over a city-like environment. The thesis presents a framework for automatic deployment of quadrotors to monitor and react to dynamically changing events. The framework has a hierarchical structure. At the top level, the UAVs perform complex behaviors that satisfy high- level mission specifications. At the bottom level, low-level controllers drive actuators on vehicles to perform the desired maneuvers. In parallel with the development of controllers, this work covers the implementation of the system into an experimental testbed. The testbed emulates a city using physical objects to represent static features and projectors to display dynamic events occurring on the ground as seen by an aerial vehicle. The experimental platform features a motion capture system that provides position data for UAVs and physical features of the environment, allowing for precise, closed-loop control of the vehicles. Experimental runs in the testbed are used to validate the effectiveness of the developed control strategies
