Incremental Hierarchical Clustering driven Automatic Annotations for Unifying IoT Streaming Data
In the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and sensor technologies huge and variety of streaming sensor data is generated. The unification of streaming sensor data is a challenging problem. Moreover, the huge amount of raw data has implied the insufficiency of manual and semi-automatic annotation and leads to an increase of the research of automatic semantic annotation. However, many of the existing semantic annotation mechanisms require many joint conditions that could generate redundant processing of transitional results for annotating the sensor data using SPARQL queries. In this paper, we present an Incremental Clustering Driven Automatic Annotation for IoT Streaming Data (IHC-AA-IoTSD) using SPARQL to improve the annotation efficiency. The processes and corresponding algorithms of the incremental hierarchical clustering driven automatic annotation mechanism are presented in detail, including data classification, incremental hierarchical clustering, querying the extracted data, semantic data annotation, and semantic data integration. The IHCAA-IoTSD has been implemented and experimented on three healthcare datasets and compared with leading approaches namely- Agent-based Text Labelling and Automatic Selection (ATLAS), Fuzzy-based Automatic Semantic Annotation Method (FBASAM), and an Ontology-based Semantic Annotation Approach (OBSAA), yielding encouraging results with Accuracy of 86.67%, Precision of 87.36%, Recall of 85.48%, and F-score of 85.92% at 100k triple data
Semantic Gateway as a Service architecture for IoT Interoperability
The Internet of Things (IoT) is set to occupy a substantial component of
future Internet. The IoT connects sensors and devices that record physical
observations to applications and services of the Internet. As a successor to
technologies such as RFID and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), the IoT has
stumbled into vertical silos of proprietary systems, providing little or no
interoperability with similar systems. As the IoT represents future state of
the Internet, an intelligent and scalable architecture is required to provide
connectivity between these silos, enabling discovery of physical sensors and
interpretation of messages between things. This paper proposes a gateway and
Semantic Web enabled IoT architecture to provide interoperability between
systems using established communication and data standards. The Semantic
Gateway as Service (SGS) allows translation between messaging protocols such as
XMPP, CoAP and MQTT via a multi-protocol proxy architecture. Utilization of
broadly accepted specifications such as W3C's Semantic Sensor Network (SSN)
ontology for semantic annotations of sensor data provide semantic
interoperability between messages and support semantic reasoning to obtain
higher-level actionable knowledge from low-level sensor data.Comment: 16 page
Interoperability in IoT through the semantic profiling of objects
The emergence of smarter and broader people-oriented IoT applications and services requires interoperability at both data and knowledge levels. However, although some semantic IoT architectures have been proposed, achieving a high degree of interoperability requires dealing with a sea of non-integrated data, scattered across vertical silos. Also, these architectures do not fit into the machine-to-machine requirements, as data annotation has no knowledge on object interactions behind arriving data. This paper presents a vision of how to overcome these issues. More specifically, the semantic profiling of objects, through CoRE related standards, is envisaged as the key for data integration, allowing more powerful data annotation, validation, and reasoning. These are the key blocks for the development of intelligent applications.Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) [UID/MULTI/00631/2013
A Data Annotation Architecture for Semantic Applications in Virtualized Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become very popular and are being used
in many application domains (e.g. smart cities, security, gaming and
agriculture). Virtualized WSNs allow the same WSN to be shared by multiple
applications. Semantic applications are situation-aware and can potentially
play a critical role in virtualized WSNs. However, provisioning them in such
settings remains a challenge. The key reason is that semantic applications
provisioning mandates data annotation. Unfortunately it is no easy task to
annotate data collected in virtualized WSNs. This paper proposes a data
annotation architecture for semantic applications in virtualized heterogeneous
WSNs. The architecture uses overlays as the cornerstone, and we have built a
prototype in the cloud environment using Google App Engine. The early
performance measurements are also presented.Comment: This paper has been accepted for presentation in main technical
session of 14th IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Network and Service
Management (IM 2015) to be held on 11-15 May, 2015, Ottawa, Canad
Context Aware Computing for The Internet of Things: A Survey
As we are moving towards the Internet of Things (IoT), the number of sensors
deployed around the world is growing at a rapid pace. Market research has shown
a significant growth of sensor deployments over the past decade and has
predicted a significant increment of the growth rate in the future. These
sensors continuously generate enormous amounts of data. However, in order to
add value to raw sensor data we need to understand it. Collection, modelling,
reasoning, and distribution of context in relation to sensor data plays
critical role in this challenge. Context-aware computing has proven to be
successful in understanding sensor data. In this paper, we survey context
awareness from an IoT perspective. We present the necessary background by
introducing the IoT paradigm and context-aware fundamentals at the beginning.
Then we provide an in-depth analysis of context life cycle. We evaluate a
subset of projects (50) which represent the majority of research and commercial
solutions proposed in the field of context-aware computing conducted over the
last decade (2001-2011) based on our own taxonomy. Finally, based on our
evaluation, we highlight the lessons to be learnt from the past and some
possible directions for future research. The survey addresses a broad range of
techniques, methods, models, functionalities, systems, applications, and
middleware solutions related to context awareness and IoT. Our goal is not only
to analyse, compare and consolidate past research work but also to appreciate
their findings and discuss their applicability towards the IoT.Comment: IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials Journal, 201
Modeling IoT-aware Business Processes - A State of the Art Report
This research report presents an analysis of the state of the art of modeling
Internet of Things (IoT)-aware business processes. IOT links the physical world
to the digital world. Traditionally, we would find information about events and
processes in the physical world in the digital world entered by humans and
humans using this information to control the physical world. In the IoT
paradigm, the physical world is equipped with sensors and actuators to create a
direct link with the digital world. Business processes are used to coordinate a
complex environment including multiple actors for a common goal, typically in
the context of administrative work. In the past few years, we have seen
research efforts on the possibilities to model IoT- aware business processes,
extending process coordination to real world entities directly. This set of
research efforts is relatively small when compared to the overall research
effort into the IoT and much of the work is still in the early research stage.
To create a basis for a bridge between IoT and BPM, the goal of this report is
to collect and analyze the state of the art of existing frameworks for modeling
IoT-aware business processes.Comment: 42 page
