Research relative to high resolution camera on the advanced X-ray astrophysics facility
The HRC (High Resolution Camera) is a photon counting instrument to be flown on the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF). It is a large field of view, high angular resolution, detector for the x-ray telescope. The HRC consists of a CsI coated microchannel plate (MCP) acting as a soft x-ray photocathode, followed by a second MCP for high electronic gain. The MCPs are readout by a crossed grid of resistively coupled wires to provide high spatial resolution along with timing and pulse height data. The instrument will be used in two modes, as a direct imaging detector with a limiting sensitivity of 10 to the -15 ergs sq cm sec in a 10 to the 5th second exposure, and as a readout for an objective transmission grating providing spectral resolution of several hundreds to thousands
Structural and optical properties of CsI thin films: Influence of film thickness and humidity
Structural and optical studies have been performed on the
thermally-evaporated "as-deposited" and "humid air aged" CsI thin films. The
structural analysis for both "as-deposited" and "humid air aged" films shows a
well-oriented peaks position of (110) and (220) lattice planes with a
compressive stress in the films. The crystal quality has been investigated
through the structural parameters. The increase in peak intensity as well as
sharpness with film thickness implies the improvement of crystallinity. The
optical absorbance of CsI films has been analyzed in the wavelength range of
190 nm - 900 nm in order to estimate the band gap energy of the films. Slater's
model has also been used to explain the degradation of band gap energy with the
increase in crystallite size.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica B: Condensed Matter Journa

Metal assisted chemically etched silicon nanowires for application in a hybrid solar cell
>Magister Scientiae - MScPhotovoltaic (PV) devices based on inorganic-organic hybrid active layers have been
extensively studied for over a decade now. However, photoactive hybrid layers of
material combinations such as rr-P3HT and SiNWs still require further exploration as
candidates for solar cell (SC) fabrication, due to favourable optical absorption and
charge carrier mobility associated with them respectively. The ultimate goal of the study
is to fabricate ITO/PEDOT:PSS/rr-P3HT:SiNWs/Al SCs with different SiNWs content
and investigate the different parameters or factors influencing the performance of these
cells. The vertically aligned SiNW arrays on a Si wafer were synthesised via metal
assisted chemical etching (MACE) and a method of chemically detaching these wires
was developed. The average length and the diameter of the SiNWs obtained were 4.5
μm and 0.2 μm, respectively. Different weight ratios of as-synthesised SiNWs were then
incorporated within rr-P3HT to form different hybrid solutions, i.e. rr-P3HT: 0.3 wt%
SiNWs, rr-P3HT: 0.7 wt% SiNWs and rr-P3HT: 1.3 wt% SiNWs. In addition, a pure rr-
P3HT solution was made for reference purposes. SEM characterisation shows that the
SiNWs are randomly distributed across the active area, and that the film becomes
progressively inhomogeneous upon addition of SiNWs, whereas the TEM
characterisation revealed that there is no chemical interaction between the rr-P3HT and
SiNWs. The UV-Vis and PL spectra suggest that there are changes in absorption and
emission characteristics upon SiNW incorporation into the rr-P3HT matrix, which may
have impacted the charge transfer .The electrical properties of the different hybrid films
were probed using Hall Effect measurements, which revealed that the conductivity
increases with the increase in the concentration of nanowires (NWs). The increase in
conductivity upon the addition of SiNWs in the rr-P3HT matrix was related to an
increase of the mobility (μ) of charge carriers in the hybrid films

Efficient and bright warm-white electroluminescence from lead-free metal halides.
Solution-processed metal-halide perovskites are emerging as one of the most promising materials for displays, lighting and energy generation. Currently, the best-performing perovskite optoelectronic devices are based on lead halides and the lead toxicity severely restricts their practical applications. Moreover, efficient white electroluminescence from broadband-emission metal halides remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate efficient and bright lead-free LEDs based on cesium copper halides enabled by introducing an organic additive (Tween, polyethylene glycol sorbitan monooleate) into the precursor solutions. We find the additive can reduce the trap states, enhancing the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the metal halide films, and increase the surface potential, facilitating the hole injection and transport in the LEDs. Consequently, we achieve warm-white LEDs reaching an external quantum efficiency of 3.1% and a luminance of 1570 cd m-2 at a low voltage of 5.4 V, showing great promise of lead-free metal halides for solution-processed white LED applications
Design and tests of the hard X-ray polarimeter X-Calibur
X-ray polarimetry promises to give qualitatively new information about
high-energy astrophysical sources, such as binary black hole systems,
micro-quasars, active galactic nuclei, and gamma-ray bursts. We designed, built
and tested a hard X-ray polarimeter X-Calibur to be used in the focal plane of
the InFOCuS grazing incidence hard X-ray telescope. X-Calibur combines a low-Z
Compton scatterer with a CZT detector assembly to measure the polarization of
10-80 keV X-rays making use of the fact that polarized photons Compton scatter
preferentially perpendicular to the electric field orientation. X-Calibur
achieves a high detection efficiency of order unity.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, conference proceedings: SPIE 2011 (San Diego

Multi-Cation Perovskite Semiconductors for All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells
