    Towards a Theory of Parameterized Streaming Algorithms

    Parameterized complexity attempts to give a more fine-grained analysis of the complexity of problems: instead of measuring the running time as a function of only the input size, we analyze the running time with respect to additional parameters. This approach has proven to be highly successful in delineating our understanding of NP-hard problems. Given this success with the TIME resource, it seems but natural to use this approach for dealing with the SPACE resource. First attempts in this direction have considered a few individual problems, with some success: Fafianie and Kratsch [MFCS\u2714] and Chitnis et al. [SODA\u2715] introduced the notions of streaming kernels and parameterized streaming algorithms respectively. For example, the latter shows how to refine the Omega(n^2) bit lower bound for finding a minimum Vertex Cover (VC) in the streaming setting by designing an algorithm for the parameterized k-VC problem which uses O(k^{2}log n) bits. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of graph problems from the paradigm of parameterized streaming algorithms. We first define a natural hierarchy of space complexity classes of FPS, SubPS, SemiPS, SupPS and BrutePS, and then obtain tight classifications for several well-studied graph problems such as Longest Path, Feedback Vertex Set, Dominating Set, Girth, Treewidth, etc. into this hierarchy (see Figure 1 and Table 1). On the algorithmic side, our parameterized streaming algorithms use techniques from the FPT world such as bidimensionality, iterative compression and bounded-depth search trees. On the hardness side, we obtain lower bounds for the parameterized streaming complexity of various problems via novel reductions from problems in communication complexity. We also show a general (unconditional) lower bound for space complexity of parameterized streaming algorithms for a large class of problems inspired by the recently developed frameworks for showing (conditional) kernelization lower bounds. Parameterized algorithms and streaming algorithms are approaches to cope with TIME and SPACE intractability respectively. It is our hope that this work on parameterized streaming algorithms leads to two-way flow of ideas between these two previously separated areas of theoretical computer science

    Partitioned methods for coupled fluid flow problems

    Many flow problems in engineering and technology are coupled in their nature. Plenty of turbulent flows are solved by legacy codes or by ones written by a team of programmers with great complexity. As knowledge of turbulent flows expands and new models are introduced, implementation of modern approaches in legacy codes and increasing their accuracy are of great concern. On the other hand, industrial flow models normally involve multi-physical process or multi-domains. Given the different nature of the physical processes of each subproblem, they may require different meshes, time steps and methods. There is a natural desire to uncouple and solve such systems by solving each subphysics problem, to reduce the technical complexity and allow the use of optimized legacy sub-problems' codes. The objective of this work is the development, analysis and validation of new modular, uncoupling algorithms for some coupled flow models, addressing both of the above problems. Particularly, this thesis studies: i) explicitly uncoupling algorithm for implementation of variational multiscale approach in legacy turbulence codes, ii) partitioned time stepping methods for magnetohydrodynamics flows, and iii) partitioned time stepping methods for groundwater-surface water flows. For each direction, we give comprehensive analysis of stability and derive optimal error estimates of our proposed methods. We discuss the advantages and limitations of uncoupling methods compared with monolithic methods, where the globally coupled problems are assembled and solved in one step. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results

    Fast Algorithms for Biharmonic Problems and Applications to Fluid Dynamics

    Many areas of physics, engineering and applied mathematics require solutions of inhomogeneous biharmonic problems. For example, various problems on Stokes flow and elasticity can be cast into biharmonic boundary value problems. Hence the slow viscous flow problems are generally modeled using biharmonic boundary value problems which have widespread applications in many areas of industrial problems such as flow of molten metals, flow of particulate suspensions in bio-fluid dynamics, just to mention a few. In this dissertation, we derive, implement, validate, and apply fast and high order accurate algorithms to solve Poisson problems and inhomogeneous biharmonic problems in the interior of a unit disc in the complex plane. In particular, we use two methods to solve inhomogeneous biharmonic problems: (i) the double-Poisson method which is based on transforming biharmonic problems into solving a sequence of Poisson problems (sometime also one homogeneous biharmonic problem) and then making use of the fast Poisson solver developed in this dissertation.; (ii) the direct method which uses the fast biharmoninc solver also developed in this dissertation. Both of these methods are analyzed for accuracy, complexity and efficiency. These biharmonic solvers have been compared with each other and have been applied to solve several Stokes flow problems and elasticity problems. The fast Poisson algorithm is derived here from exact analysis of the Green’s function formulation in the complex plane. This algorithm is essentially a recast of the fast Poisson algorithm of Borges and Daripa from the real plane to the complex plane. The fast biharmonic algorithms for several boundary conditions for use in the direct method mentioned above have been derived in this dissertation from exact analysis of the representation of their solutions in terms of problem specific Green’s function in the complex plane. The resulting algorithms primarily use fast Fourier transforms and recursive relations in Fourier space. The algorithms have been analyzed for their accuracy, complexity, efficiency, and subsequently tested for validity against several benchmark test problems. These algorithms have an asymptotic complexity of O(log N ) per degree of freedom with very low constant which is hidden behind the order estimate. The direct and double-Poisson methods have been applied to solving the steady, incompressible slow viscous flow problem in a cir- cular cylinder and some problems from elasticity. The numerical results from these computations agree well with existing results on these problems

    This dissertation focuses on algorithmic aspects of program verification, and presents modeling and complexity advances on several problems related to the static analysis of programs, the stateless model checking of concurrent programs, and the competitive analysis of real-time scheduling algorithms. Our contributions can be broadly grouped into five categories. Our first contribution is a set of new algorithms and data structures for the quantitative and data-flow analysis of programs, based on the graph-theoretic notion of treewidth. It has been observed that the control-flow graphs of typical programs have special structure, and are characterized as graphs of small treewidth. We utilize this structural property to provide faster algorithms for the quantitative and data-flow analysis of recursive and concurrent programs. In most cases we make an algebraic treatment of the considered problem, where several interesting analyses, such as the reachability, shortest path, and certain kind of data-flow analysis problems follow as special cases. We exploit the constant-treewidth property to obtain algorithmic improvements for on-demand versions of the problems, and provide data structures with various tradeoffs between the resources spent in the preprocessing and querying phase. We also improve on the algorithmic complexity of quantitative problems outside the algebraic path framework, namely of the minimum mean-payoff, minimum ratio, and minimum initial credit for energy problems. Our second contribution is a set of algorithms for Dyck reachability with applications to data-dependence analysis and alias analysis. In particular, we develop an optimal algorithm for Dyck reachability on bidirected graphs, which are ubiquitous in context-insensitive, field-sensitive points-to analysis. Additionally, we develop an efficient algorithm for context-sensitive data-dependence analysis via Dyck reachability, where the task is to obtain analysis summaries of library code in the presence of callbacks. Our algorithm preprocesses libraries in almost linear time, after which the contribution of the library in the complexity of the client analysis is (i)~linear in the number of call sites and (ii)~only logarithmic in the size of the whole library, as opposed to linear in the size of the whole library. Finally, we prove that Dyck reachability is Boolean Matrix Multiplication-hard in general, and the hardness also holds for graphs of constant treewidth. This hardness result strongly indicates that there exist no combinatorial algorithms for Dyck reachability with truly subcubic complexity. Our third contribution is the formalization and algorithmic treatment of the Quantitative Interprocedural Analysis framework. In this framework, the transitions of a recursive program are annotated as good, bad or neutral, and receive a weight which measures the magnitude of their respective effect. The Quantitative Interprocedural Analysis problem asks to determine whether there exists an infinite run of the program where the long-run ratio of the bad weights over the good weights is above a given threshold. We illustrate how several quantitative problems related to static analysis of recursive programs can be instantiated in this framework, and present some case studies to this direction. Our fourth contribution is a new dynamic partial-order reduction for the stateless model checking of concurrent programs. Traditional approaches rely on the standard Mazurkiewicz equivalence between traces, by means of partitioning the trace space into equivalence classes, and attempting to explore a few representatives from each class. We present a new dynamic partial-order reduction method called the Data-centric Partial Order Reduction (DC-DPOR). Our algorithm is based on a new equivalence between traces, called the observation equivalence. DC-DPOR explores a coarser partitioning of the trace space than any exploration method based on the standard Mazurkiewicz equivalence. Depending on the program, the new partitioning can be even exponentially coarser. Additionally, DC-DPOR spends only polynomial time in each explored class. Our fifth contribution is the use of automata and game-theoretic verification techniques in the competitive analysis and synthesis of real-time scheduling algorithms for firm-deadline tasks. On the analysis side, we leverage automata on infinite words to compute the competitive ratio of real-time schedulers subject to various environmental constraints. On the synthesis side, we introduce a new instance of two-player mean-payoff partial-information games, and show how the synthesis of an optimal real-time scheduler can be reduced to computing winning strategies in this new type of games

    U ovom radu govorimo o problemu toka kroz mrežu. Najprije definiramo neke osnovne pojmove koji su nam potrebni za daljnje razmatranje problema. Potom opisujemo Ford-Fulkersonov algoritam, koji je jedan od najznačajnijih algoritama za rješavanje problema toka kroz mrežu. Analiziramo složenost algoritma te na primjeru pokazujemo kako se može izračunati maksimalan tok kroz mrežu pomoću ovog algoritma. Prije same analize, navodimo teorem maksimalnog toka, odnosno, minimalnog reza, koji govori o odnosu ta dva problema. Nakon Ford-Fulkersonovog algoritma, opisujemo Edmonds-Karpov algoritam, koji je, zapravo, jedno poboljšanje Ford-Fulkersonovog algoritma. Zatim uvodimo neka proširenja problema toka kroz mrežu, poput cirkulacija sa zahtjevima i cirkulacija sa zahtjevima i donjim granicama. Navedena proširenja poslužit će nam kod rješavanja problema provođenja nadzora i određivanja rasporeda letenja. First of all, we define some of the basic terms needed for the future analysis of the problem. Then we describe the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm, which is one of the most important algorithms for solving the network flow problem. We analyse the complexity of the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm and also demonstrate by example how to compute the maximum flow by using this algorithm. Before the complexity analysis, we first talk about Max-Flow/Min-Cut Theorem, that talks about the relationship between maximum flow and minimum cut problems. After describing Ford-Fulkerson’s algorithm, we describe the Edmonds-Karp algorithm, which is, actually, one of improvements of the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. Finally, we introduce some extensions of the maximum flow problem, like circulations with demands and circulations with demands and lower bounds. Above mentioned extensions of the maximum flow will be used to solve the problem of survey design and airline scheduling. Survey design and airline scheduling are just some applications of the maximum flow problem

    Complexity of evolutionary equilibria in static fitness landscapes

    A fitness landscape is a genetic space -- with two genotypes adjacent if they differ in a single locus -- and a fitness function. Evolutionary dynamics produce a flow on this landscape from lower fitness to higher; reaching equilibrium only if a local fitness peak is found. I use computational complexity to question the common assumption that evolution on static fitness landscapes can quickly reach a local fitness peak. I do this by showing that the popular NK model of rugged fitness landscapes is PLS-complete for K >= 2; the reduction from Weighted 2SAT is a bijection on adaptive walks, so there are NK fitness landscapes where every adaptive path from some vertices is of exponential length. Alternatively -- under the standard complexity theoretic assumption that there are problems in PLS not solvable in polynomial time -- this means that there are no evolutionary dynamics (known, or to be discovered, and not necessarily following adaptive paths) that can converge to a local fitness peak on all NK landscapes with K = 2. Applying results from the analysis of simplex algorithms, I show that there exist single-peaked landscapes with no reciprocal sign epistasis where the expected length of an adaptive path following strong selection weak mutation dynamics is eO(n1/3)e^{O(n^{1/3})} even though an adaptive path to the optimum of length less than n is available from every vertex. The technical results are written to be accessible to mathematical biologists without a computer science background, and the biological literature is summarized for the convenience of non-biologists with the aim to open a constructive dialogue between the two disciplines.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Sensor networks and distributed CSP: communication, computation and complexity

    We introduce SensorDCSP, a naturally distributed benchmark based on a real-world application that arises in the context of networked distributed systems. In order to study the performance of Distributed CSP (DisCSP) algorithms in a truly distributed setting, we use a discrete-event network simulator, which allows us to model the impact of different network traffic conditions on the performance of the algorithms. We consider two complete DisCSP algorithms: asynchronous backtracking (ABT) and asynchronous weak commitment search (AWC), and perform performance comparison for these algorithms on both satisfiable and unsatisfiable instances of SensorDCSP. We found that random delays (due to network traffic or in some cases actively introduced by the agents) combined with a dynamic decentralized restart strategy can improve the performance of DisCSP algorithms. In addition, we introduce GSensorDCSP, a plain-embedded version of SensorDCSP that is closely related to various real-life dynamic tracking systems. We perform both analytical and empirical study of this benchmark domain.
