The supposed admission to the holy orders of Aldus Manutius the Younger (1547-1597) has been already a subject of debate a few years after his death. Some unknown letters by Aldus to Antonio Maria Graziani (1537-1611) allow to shed new light about this event. Through the review of already known documents and with the help of unpublished sources it can be argued that Aldus’ decision was closely connected to the end of his marriage with Francesca Giunti. Niccolò Manassi, Aldus’ associate and manager of the Venetian shop ad signum Aldi, had a considerable role in their separation; after Aldus’ death he married Francesca and took the lead of what remained of the glorious Aldine Press

Tra dottrina grammaticale e ortografia latina: l\u2019Aldina del De Aetna di Pietro Bembo

Diacritical marks introduced by Pietro Bembo with the help of his editor, Aldus Manutius, in the first edition of his dialogue De Aetna form a complex and well-structured system. Although devised for practical purposes, so as to ensure a correct reading and phrasing of the Latin text, this system is clearly based on solid theoretical premises. The decisive factor for its introduction was the experience of editing Greek texts, which became the impulse as well as the basis for the system of diacritical signs. The influence of Latin grammarians (in particular, Servius and Priscianus), who had applied Greek accent theory to Latin language, also played an important part. Within a system essentially devoid of ambiguity, the three accents conveyed a variety of indications bearing on the correct pronunciation of the text, from basic principles to expressive nuances. Several editorial decisions involving phrase accents suggest that Bembo considered not only private reading, whether oral or mental (endophasic), but also public declamation

Riflessioni sullo spirito editoriale di Aldo Manuzio

Il contributo tende a mostrare come lo spirito antiquariale che caratterizza molte edizioni di testi antichi già nel Quattrocento e per tutto il Cinquecento non appartiene alla mentalità di Aldo, interessato soprattutto alla messa in circolazione di testi fruibili e affidabili. La stessa filologia deve confinarsi, per Aldo, nella fase preparatoria delle stampe, ma i testi, una volta licenziati, devono ostentare una irrevocabile e quasi sacramentale definitività.The paper aims to prove that no kind of antiquarian impulse accounts for Aldus's project as a publisher. Philology itself, although regarded by him as a useful tool, must not be displayed in his books: once printed, Aldus’s editions are supposed to provide each text in its only possible form
