    Running real time distributed simulations under Linux and CERTI

    This paper presents some experiments and some results to enforce real time distributed simulations in accordance with the High Level Architecture (HLA). Simulations were run by using CERTI, an open source middleware, as the Run Time Infrastructure (RTI). Models were distributed over computers under various available versions of the 2.6 Linux kernel. Studies and experiments relied on a real case study. The chosen case study was the simulation of an "in formation" flight of observation satellites. This case study brings up some real applicative needs in real time distributed simulations and real configurations of simulators and models. Two simulations of "in formation" flight of satellites were studied. The study consisted in modeling the behaviour of the simulators and in running these models by using various kernel or middleware operating mechanisms and services. Time measurements were performed at each test giving some results on the ability of the simulation to meet its real time requirements

    Evaluation of ADAM/1 model for advanced coal extraction concepts

    Several existing computer programs for estimating life cycle cost of mining systems were evaluated. A commercially available program, ADAM/1 was found to be satisfactory in relation to the needs of the advanced coal extraction project. Two test cases were run to confirm the ability of the program to handle nonconventional mining equipment and procedures. The results were satisfactory. The model, therefore, is recommended to the project team for evaluation of their conceptual designs

    Engineering visualization utilizing advanced animation

    Engineering visualization is the use of computer graphics to depict engineering analysis and simulation in visual form from project planning through documentation. Graphics displays let engineers see data represented dynamically which permits the quick evaluation of results. The current state of graphics hardware and software generally allows the creation of two types of 3D graphics. The use of animated video as an engineering visualization tool is presented. The engineering, animation, and videography aspects of animated video production are each discussed. Specific issues include the integration of staffing expertise, hardware, software, and the various production processes. A detailed explanation of the animation process reveals the capabilities of this unique engineering visualization method. Automation of animation and video production processes are covered and future directions are proposed

    HLA high performance and real-time simulation studies with CERTI

    Our work takes place in the context of the HLA standard and its application in real-time systems context. Indeed, current HLA standard is inadequate for taking into consideration the different constraints involved in real-time computer systems. Many works have been invested in order to provide real-time capabilities to Run Time Infrastructures (RTI). This paper describes our approach focusing on achieving hard real-time properties for HLA federations through a complete state of the art on the related domain. Our paper also proposes a global bottom up approach from basic hardware and software basic requirements to experimental tests for validation of distributed real-time simulation with CERTI

    Quantum Computing in the NISQ era and beyond

    Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) technology will be available in the near future. Quantum computers with 50-100 qubits may be able to perform tasks which surpass the capabilities of today's classical digital computers, but noise in quantum gates will limit the size of quantum circuits that can be executed reliably. NISQ devices will be useful tools for exploring many-body quantum physics, and may have other useful applications, but the 100-qubit quantum computer will not change the world right away --- we should regard it as a significant step toward the more powerful quantum technologies of the future. Quantum technologists should continue to strive for more accurate quantum gates and, eventually, fully fault-tolerant quantum computing.Comment: 20 pages.     Imaging spontaneous imbibition in full Darcy‐scale samples at pore‐scale resolution by fast X‐ray tomography

    Spontaneous imbibition is a process occurring in a porous medium which describes wetting phase replacing nonwetting phase spontaneously due to capillary forces. This process is conventionally investigated by standardized, well-established spontaneous imbibition tests. In these tests, for instance, a rock sample is surrounded by wetting fluid. The following cumulative production of nonwetting phase versus time is used as a qualitative measure for wettability. However, these test results are difficult to interpret, because many rocks do not show a homogeneous but a mixed wettability in which the wetting preference of a rock varies from location to location. Moreover, during the test the flow regime typically changes from countercurrent to cocurrent flow and no phase pressure or pressure drop can be recorded. To help interpretation, we complement Darcy-scale production curves with X-ray imaging to describe the differences in imbibition processes between water-wet and mixed-wet systems. We found that the formation of a spontaneous imbibition front occurs only for water-wet systems; mixed-wet systems show localized imbibition events only. The asymmetry of the front depends on the occurrence of preferred production sites, which influences interpretation. Fluid layers on the outside of mixed-wet samples increase connectivity of the drained phase and the effect of buoyancy on spontaneous imbibition. The wider implication of our study is the demonstration of the capability of benchtop laboratory equipment to image a full Darcy-scale experiment while at the same time obtaining pore-scale information, resolving the natural length and time scale of the underlying processes

    A Role for Virtual Engineering in Engineering Skills Development

    The paper will address how the Problem-Based-Learning (PBL) approach developed at Liverpool for undergraduate and graduate students has been extended to the continued professional development (CPD) of practising engineers. As the complexity of engineering systems grows, engineers increasingly need to be able to use a range of tools to undertake synthesis and analysis, address affordability goals, and reduce risk as they work in the various phases of the engineering life-cycle. To assist engineers operate successfully within this product life-cycle, there have been significant developments in modelling and simulation tools. Integrating these tools in a Virtual Engineering (VE) environment allows engineers to examine potentially conflicting requirements within the different phases of the life-cycle, to develop a co-ordinated approach to requirements capture and product design through to identifying costly problems that might occur later in the development and operations phases. Technical skills development to use these tools is critical in this process. This paper presents the experiences, learning outcomes and lessons gleaned in the development and implementation of bespoke rotorcraft engineering training programmes at The University of Liverpool. The programmes were designed using a Problem Based Learning (PBL) framework where knowledge and skills are gained through solving problems. Four cases studies are presented in the paper, demonstrating how this PBL/VE approach has been used effectively in training programmes. Consideration is given to the future use of VE tools, together with some challenges for their successful application
