    Graphics calculators and algebra

    Get PDF
The personal technology of the graphics calculator is presently the only one likely to be available widely enough to influence curriculum design and implementation on a large scale. The algebra curriculum of the past is overburdened with symbolic manipulation at the expense of understanding for most students. But algebra is much more than just symbolic manipulation. Connections between some aspects of algebra: expressing generality, functions, equations and advanced algebra and some graphics calculator capabilities are briefly described. It is suggested that these kinds of connections need to be taken into account in developing the algebra curriculum as well as in classroom teaching

An effort to produce a representative workstation for the Space Station Data Management Test Bed that provides man/machine interface design options for consolidating, automating, and integrating the space station work station, and hardware/software technology demonstrations of space station applications is discussed. The workstation will emphasize the technologies of advanced graphics engines, advanced display/control medias, image management techniques, multifunction controls, and video disk utilizations

Interactive Computer Graphics - An Advanced Computer Technology

    Get PDF
Computers have been an invaluable aid as man has grappled with advancing technology. As the computer tool has become more sophisticated, man\u27s ability to master new technologies and applications has been proportionately accelerated. One of the very promising sophistications today is graphics. A research project to: 1. Determine capability and 2. Promote utilization has been underway at Boeing Huntsville and is the subject of this paper. Reference 1 is devoted to some of the mechanics of the program and its operation. This complimentary paper will document the graphics program as an entity, its relationship to the parent organization\u27s function, and some of the details of selected applications

Interactive color display of 3-D engineering analysis results

    Get PDF
A general approach to three-dimensional postprocessing of engineering analyses is presented. The approach is versatile and may handle the results from a wide range of engineering analysis methods which involve the discretization of continua. To facilitate the understanding of complex three-dimensional numerical models, advanced interactive color postprocessing techniques are introduced. Finite element, finite difference, and boundary element models are evaluated with the prototype postprocessor. The existing color graphics program (POSTPRO3D) was ported to a high-resolution device. Interactive graphic tools were implemented to facilitate qualitative mesh evaluation from a single analysis. A postprocessing environment was design for workstation technology

Knowledge representation in space flight operations

In space flight operations rapid understanding of the state of the space vehicle is essential. Representation of knowledge depicting space vehicle status in a dynamic environment presents a difficult challenge. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory has pursued areas of technology associated with the advancement of spacecraft operations environment. This has led to the development of several advanced mission systems which incorporate enhanced graphics capabilities. These systems include: (1) Spacecraft Health Automated Reasoning Prototype (SHARP); (2) Spacecraft Monitoring Environment (SME); (3) Electrical Power Data Monitor (EPDM); (4) Generic Payload Operations Control Center (GPOCC); and (5) Telemetry System Monitor Prototype (TSM). Knowledge representation in these systems provides a direct representation of the intrinsic images associated with the instrument and satellite telemetry and telecommunications systems. The man-machine interface includes easily interpreted contextual graphic displays. These interactive video displays contain multiple display screens with pop-up windows and intelligent, high resolution graphics linked through context and mouse-sensitive icons and text

Early Development of Graphical Literacy through Knowledge Building

    Get PDF
This study examined growth in graphical literacy for students contributing to an online, multimedia, communal environment as they advanced their understanding of biology, history and optics. Their science and history studies started early in Grade 3 and continued to the end of Grade 4; students did not receive instruction in graphics production, nor were they required to produce graphics. Results show that students spontaneously produced graphics that advanced along seven dimensions, including effective representation of complex ideas, use of source information and captions, and aesthetic quality. On average, the scores for the seven dimensions were higher for Grade 4 students with two years of experience with Knowledge Building pedagogy and technology (Knowledge Forum®) than for Grade 6 students with one year of experience. The overall pattern of results suggests reciprocal enhancement of graphical, textual, digital, and scientific literacy, with students exceeding expectations by available norms, and performance enhanced through extended Knowledge Building experience

The art and science of speech recognition have been advanced to the state where it is now possible to communicate reliably with a computer by speaking to it in a disciplined manner using a vocabulary of moderate size. There are many applications of speech recognition technology in telecommunications and other fields. Voice Interactive Computer Graphics And Games (VICGG) describes and emphasizes how voice recognition can be applied to design a real-time interactive graphics system. The VICGG system consists of a recognition module and a graphics module; The recognition module is used for isolated word recognition. Three separate implementations of recognition algorithms have been evaluated. The first algorithm illustrate the effect of noise reduction filters in the recognition process. The second algorithm usee a noise-gate in the recognition process. The third algorithm is an improved version of the first two and is implemented using short-time Fourier analysis and bank of filters. The relative merits and demerits of these algorithm have been discussed. Using a vocabulary of moderate size, accuracy and real-time performance have been achieved in the third algorithm; The graphics module has a set of 3-dimensional Dinosaur animations, which are totally controlled by the recognition module. The event driven graphics module is implemented using OpenGL. The recognized word from the recognition module is linked to a corresponding animation in the graphics module; The VICGG sysem demonstrates how speech technology will play an increasingly important role in the current multimedia era. This reaserch also illustrates the applications of speech recogntion technology in diverse fields
