    Proactive Advising in Admission Services: Minding the Gap in Effective Communication through Text Messaging

    abstract: It is vital for schools to have qualified teachers educating our children. Institutions with teacher preparation programs supply a valuable service to their communities by providing classrooms with devoted professionals who thrive on helping children learn, and the Teachers College, where this study is set, is one such institution. The Teachers College offers two pathways to gain teacher certification: a traditional bachelor’s degree in teaching areas such as elementary, secondary, or special education, as well as master’s degrees in those same teaching areas which offer students with a bachelor’s degree in an area other than teaching, another pathway to teacher certification. Many people who receive their bachelor degrees and then return to college to earn advanced K-12 teacher education degrees are from the millennial generation. The decision to return to college to earn a master’s degree with teacher certification can be a stressful one. Millennial students seeking teacher certification often have fulltime jobs and families, and therefore need the process of returning to school to be quick and efficient. How well these prospective students communicate with the admissions staff at their school of choice will determine if they receive the information needed to complete their applications. The focus of this study is to investigate if a proactive advising text message innovation developed for this study called TextEd, used during the admission process for graduate level, teacher certification programs at the Teachers College, affected applicant communication levels and customer satisfaction through the application process. More specifically, surveys and interviews were conducted with applicants from three teacher certifications programs to determine if TextEd was an effective tool for communication with millennial applicants. Results indicated that applicants’ preferred method of communication was their cell phone, and an increased level of customer satisfaction occurred when using a proactive advising approach with text messaging during the admissions process.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 201

    Usability Enhancement of SMS Interface for Illiterate Users

    This article analyzes several User Interface (UI) designs and puts forward some more general design principles for interfaces designed for low-literate users. The results of this study highlight the importance of text-free interfaces compared to text-based interfaces for the illiterate and low-literate population. The study developed a Short Message Service (SMS) interface consisting of many design elements, including graphical icons, voice, and text reduction. The participants were more satisfied with the designed SMS interface as compared to the traditional text-based interface of SMS. We believe that if the user interface is appropriately designed, users will not need formal literacy, computer skills, or any external help to operate the application. It has been shown that an interface with minimal or no text but one or more graphics, audio, and digital components is helpful for users with low literacy rates

    Turing-Test Evaluation of a Mobile Haptic Virtual Reality Kissing Machine

    Various communication systems have been developed to integrate the haptic channel in digital communication. Future directions of such haptic technologies are moving towards realistic virtual reality applications and human-robot social interaction. With the digitisation of touch, robots equipped with touch sensors and actuators can communicate with humans on a more emotional and intimate level, such as sharing a hug or kiss just like humans do. This paper presents the design guideline, implementation and evaluations of a novel haptic kissing machine for smart phones - the Kissenger machine. The key novelties and contributions of the paper are: (i) A novel haptic kissing device for mobile phones, which uses dynamic perpendicular force stimulation to transmit realistic sensations of kissing in order to enhance intimacy and emotional connection of digital communication; (ii) Extensive evaluations of the Kissenger machine, including a lab experiment that compares mediated kissing with Kissenger to real kissing, a unique haptic Turing test that involves the first academic study of humanmachine kiss, and a field study of the effects of Kissenger on long distance relationships

    A Proposal for the Use of Wireless Technology in Healthcare

    The annual healthcare cost in the United States is a staggering 2.6trillionUSDorover172.6 trillion USD or over 17% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Research consultancy firm McKinsey reports that remote patient monitoring of chronically ill patients alone could reduce healthcare costs by as much as 200 billion per year. Enhancements in mobile communication devices and networks make them on par or more advanced than some of the standard instruments used in healthcare today. In addition, these devices are available at much lower costs than traditional healthcare devices. Thus, leveraging these devices and wireless networks could significantly reduce the cost of healthcare delivery and expand coverage. Wireless operators have the distribution channels and marketing capability to reach the majority of the population. Wireless operators are looking to vertical industries like healthcare for future revenue growth due to saturation in the consumer market (greater than 103% penetration). Mobile operators have networks that cover over 97% of the total US population. In addition, they have a large employee base to leverage for m-health trials. With their large employee base, mobile operators have influence over large health insurers such as United Healthcare, Wellpoint, Kaiser and others. Since healthcare insurers and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services influence the industry through reimbursements for services, gaining their acceptance is tantamount to success

    MOBILE APPLICATION BANKING AND BUSINESS PERFORMANCE IN DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS

    This study examines the relationship between mobile application banking and business performance in deposit money banks. An explanatory research design was adopted. Fourteen (14) deposit money banks were enlisted for study, drawn from Nigeria Stock Exchange as represented in Port Harcourt. However, our cross-sectional data were collected from 140 individuals, 10 purposively selected from each of the 14 banks.  The findings of the study showed that mobile application banking does not significantly relate to business performance. Based on the findings, it was concluded that mobile application banking has a dual impact on business performance. Based on this, we recommended that mobile application banking and other innovative approaches improving the mundane applications as well, ensuring efficiency in delivery and improved site traffic positively

    Sports broadcasting:an accelerator of business integration in the media industry

    The present article analyses how various forms of business integrations, combined with technology innovation, have affected the sports broadcasting market in Norway. Interviews with representatives of Norwegian TV broadcasters and transmission companies documented that extremely fierce competition can motivate former rivals to collaborate. Even the new entrants tend to operate together with others instead of operating autonomously. Such collusion can transfer market power from the sellers to the buyers of sports rights. The interviews showed how product innovations can improve the profitability of sports broadcasting. They confirmed that integration can generate economies of scope advantages (cost reductions from the joint use of inputs), for example by using labour more efficiently within parent companies. Additionally, they also showed that economies of scope advantages can come from similarities in the distribution of goods and services, not only from similarities in the production process.publishedVersio
