Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Multidimensional Index Modulation for 5G and Beyond Wireless Networks
This study examines the flexible utilization of existing IM techniques in a
comprehensive manner to satisfy the challenging and diverse requirements of 5G
and beyond services. After spatial modulation (SM), which transmits information
bits through antenna indices, application of IM to orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers has opened the door for the extension
of IM into different dimensions, such as radio frequency (RF) mirrors, time
slots, codes, and dispersion matrices. Recent studies have introduced the
concept of multidimensional IM by various combinations of one-dimensional IM
techniques to provide higher spectral efficiency (SE) and better bit error rate
(BER) performance at the expense of higher transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx)
complexity. Despite the ongoing research on the design of new IM techniques and
their implementation challenges, proper use of the available IM techniques to
address different requirements of 5G and beyond networks is an open research
area in the literature. For this reason, we first provide the dimensional-based
categorization of available IM domains and review the existing IM types
regarding this categorization. Then, we develop a framework that investigates
the efficient utilization of these techniques and establishes a link between
the IM schemes and 5G services, namely enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB),
massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable low-latency
communication (URLLC). Additionally, this work defines key performance
indicators (KPIs) to quantify the advantages and disadvantages of IM techniques
in time, frequency, space, and code dimensions. Finally, future recommendations
are given regarding the design of flexible IM-based communication systems for
5G and beyond wireless networks.Comment: This work has been submitted to Proceedings of the IEEE for possible

Cooperative diversity for the cellular uplink: Sharing strategies, performance analysis, and receiver design
In this thesis, we propose data sharing schemes for the cooperative diversity in a cellular uplink to exploit diversity and enhance throughput performance of the system. Particularly, we consider new two and three-or-more user decode and forward (DF) protocols using space time block codes. We discuss two-user and three-user amplify and forward (AF) protocols and evaluate the performance of the above mentioned data sharing protocols in terms of the bit error rate and the throughput in an asynchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular uplink. We develop a linear receiver for joint space-time decoding and multiuser detection that provides full diversity and near maximum-likelihood performance.;We also focus on a practical situation where inter-user channel is noisy and cooperating users can not successfully estimate other user\u27s data. We further design our system model such that, users decide not to forward anything in case of symbol errors. Channel estimation plays an important role here, since cooperating users make random estimation errors and the base station can not have the knowledge of the errors or the inter-user channels. We consider a training-based approach for channel estimation. We provide an information outage probability analysis for the proposed multi-user sharing schemes. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
Link Adaptation for WiMAX Supported Mobile Hotspot
In recent years, mobile hotspots have been getting much attention of the researchers. They are implemented on moving platforms. Research interests in mobile hotspots are motivated by the demand of seamless mobility. The IEEE 802.16e or mobile WiMAX opens a new door of possibility of mobile broadband. It provides extended mobility support and larger cell coverage. In this thesis we propose a simple link adaptation (LA) algorithm for the mobile hotspots, which are supported by (mobile) WiMAX network.
The role of link adaptation (LA) is very important because it controls the physical layer throughput. Therefore, all the higher layers are affected by LA. The main function of an LA algorithm is to select an appropriate burst profile. We consider downlink scenarios of WiMAX supported mobile hotspot. We formulate a discrete value optimization problem for LA, whose objective is throughput maximization. We choose forward error correction block rate (FBER) as constraint. The proposed LA algorithm comes as solution of the optimization problem. The proposed algorithm adapt with MAC layer performance. We develop a downlink channel estimation technique, propose an intra subchannel power allocation strategy, and propose an adaptive automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanism as part of LA technique. We estimate SNR using channel estimation and intra subchannel power allocation. Then the estimated SNR is adjusted based on velocity of mobile hotspot. Adjusted SNR is used to select optimum burst profile.
The performances of the proposed LA algorithm are evaluated through numerical results obtained from link level simulations. According to numerical results, the proposed LA algorithm is able to maintain a certain level quality of service (QoS)
A universal space-time architecture for multiple-antenna aided systems
In this tutorial, we first review the family of conventional multiple-antenna techniques, and then we provide a general overview of the recent concept of the powerful Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) family based on a universal Space-Time Shift Keying (STSK) philosophy. When appropriately configured, the proposed STSK scheme has the potential of outperforming conventional MIMO arrangements
Cancellation Techniques for Co-channel Interference in MIMO-OFDM Systems and Evaluating Their Performance
In a wireless communication system, the transmitted signal is exposed to various surfaces where it bounces and results in several delayed versions of the same signal at the receiver end. The delayed signals are in the form of electromagnetic waves that are diffracted and reflected from the various object surfaces. These result in co-channel interferences for wireless systems. MIMO has proven to be a striking solution for the new generation of wireless systems. MIMO-OFDM system with QPSK modulation is considered as the wireless system for studying the performance of interference cancellation techniques. The BER performance is studied in channels such as Rayleigh and Rician Fading Channels. The effects of interference are reduced to a certain extent by the inclusion of CDMA (spread spectrum technique) as Technique 1. The effects of interference on this system have been further reduced using the LMS filter as Technique 2. Hence, to show better performance in MIMO-OFDM systems, it is recommended to employ both CDMA and LMS filters to decrease the effects of co-channel interference. It is observed that the parameter BER reduces as the SNR increases for both these channels. Doi: 10.28991/esj-2021-01313 Full Text: PD
