Iterative Receiver for MIMO-OFDM System with ICI Cancellation and Channel Estimation
As a multi-carrier modulation scheme, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique can achieve high data rate in frequency-selective fading channels by splitting a broadband signal into a number of narrowband signals over a number of subcarriers, where each subcarrier is more robust to multipath. The wireless communication system with multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver, known as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, achieves high capacity by transmitting independent information over different antennas simultaneously. The combination of OFDM with multiple antennas has been considered as one of most promising techniques for future wireless communication systems. The challenge in the detection of a space-time signal is to design a low-complexity detector, which can efficiently remove interference resulted from channel variations and approach the interference-free bound. The application of iterative parallel interference canceller (PIC) with joint detection and decoding has been a promising approach. However, the decision statistics of a linear PIC is biased toward the decision boundary after the first cancellation stage. In this thesis, we employ an iterative receiver with a decoder metric, which considerably reduces the bias effect in the second iteration, which is critical for the performance of the iterative algorithm. Channel state information is required in a MIMO-OFDM system signal detection at the receiver. Its accuracy directly affects the overall performance of MIMO-OFDM systems. In order to estimate the channel in high-delay-spread environments, pilot symbols should be inserted among subcarriers before transmission. To estimate the channel over all the subcarriers, various types of interpolators can be used. In this thesis, a linear interpolator and a trigonometric interpolator are compared. Then we propose a new interpolator called the multi-tap method, which has a much better system performance. In MIMO-OFDM systems, the time-varying fading channels can destroy the orthogonality of subcarriers. This causes serious intercarrier interference (ICI), thus leading to significant system performance degradation, which becomes more severe as the normalized Doppler frequency increases. In this thesis, we propose a low-complexity iterative receiver with joint frequency- domain ICI cancellation and pilot-assisted channel estimation to minimize the effect of time-varying fading channels. At the first stage of receiver, the interference between adjacent subcarriers is subtracted from received OFDM symbols. The parallel interference cancellation detection with decision statistics combining (DSC) is then performed to suppress the interference from other antennas. By restricting the interference to a limited number of neighboring subcarriers, the computational complexity of the proposed receiver can be significantly reduced. In order to construct the time variant channel matrix in the frequency domain, channel estimation is required. However, an accurate estimation requiring complete knowledge of channel time variations for each block, cannot be obtained. For time- varying frequency-selective fading channels, the placement of pilot tones also has a significant impact on the quality of the channel estimates. Under the assumption that channel variations can be approximated by a linear model, we can derive channel state information (CSI) in the frequency domain and estimate time-domain channel parameters. In this thesis, an iterative low-complexity channel estimation method is proposed to improve the system performance. Pilot symbols are inserted in the transmitted OFDM symbols to mitigate the effect of ICI and the channel estimates are used to update the results of both the frequency domain equalizer and the PICDSC detector in each iteration. The complexity of this algorithm can be reduced because the matrices are precalculated and stored in the receiver when the placement of pilots symbols is fixed in OFDM symbols before transmission. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed MIMO-OFDM iterative receiver can effectively mitigate the effect of ICI and approach the ICI-free performance over time-varying frequency-selective fading channels
Randomly Spread CDMA: Asymptotics via Statistical Physics
This paper studies randomly spread code-division multiple access (CDMA) and
multiuser detection in the large-system limit using the replica method
developed in statistical physics. Arbitrary input distributions and flat fading
are considered. A generic multiuser detector in the form of the posterior mean
estimator is applied before single-user decoding. The generic detector can be
particularized to the matched filter, decorrelator, linear MMSE detector, the
jointly or the individually optimal detector, and others. It is found that the
detection output for each user, although in general asymptotically non-Gaussian
conditioned on the transmitted symbol, converges as the number of users go to
infinity to a deterministic function of a "hidden" Gaussian statistic
independent of the interferers. Thus the multiuser channel can be decoupled:
Each user experiences an equivalent single-user Gaussian channel, whose
signal-to-noise ratio suffers a degradation due to the multiple-access
interference. The uncoded error performance (e.g., symbol-error-rate) and the
mutual information can then be fully characterized using the degradation
factor, also known as the multiuser efficiency, which can be obtained by
solving a pair of coupled fixed-point equations identified in this paper. Based
on a general linear vector channel model, the results are also applicable to
MIMO channels such as in multiantenna systems.Comment: To be published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Transmission strategies for broadband wireless systems with MMSE turbo equalization
This monograph details efficient transmission strategies for single-carrier wireless broadband communication systems employing iterative (turbo) equalization. In particular, the first part focuses on the design and analysis of low complexity and robust MMSE-based turbo equalizers operating in the frequency domain. Accordingly, several novel receiver schemes are presented which improve the convergence properties and error performance over the existing turbo equalizers. The second part discusses concepts and algorithms that aim to increase the power and spectral efficiency of the communication system by efficiently exploiting the available resources at the transmitter side based upon the channel conditions. The challenging issue encountered in this context is how the transmission rate and power can be optimized, while a specific convergence constraint of the turbo equalizer is guaranteed.
In diesem Zusammenhang
existierende SC-MMSE Turbo-Entzerrer in verschiedenen Kanalumgebungen
Hilfe sogenannter Korrelationsdiagramme untersucht.
senderseitiger Singular-Value-Decomposition (SVD)-basierter Vorcodierung
untersucht.

Analysis and Design of Joint Communication and Sensing for Wireless Cellular Networks
Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) has emerged as an important piece of technology that will radically change ordinary wireless communication and radar systems. This research area, which has significantly grown over the last decade, aims to develop integrated systems that can provide both communication and sensing/radar functionalities simultaneously. The convergence of both systems into the same joint platform facilitates a more efficient use of the hardware and spectrum resources, enabling new civilian and professional applications.
This thesis focuses on the integration of JCAS functionalities into mobile cellular networks, such as fifth-generation new radio (5G NR) and sixth generation (6G) communication systems, which are developing toward higher frequency ranges at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bands, coming with wider bandwidths, and have massive antenna arrays, providing a great framework to develop sensing functionalities. By implementing JCAS, the different nodes of the cellular network, such as the base station and user equipment, can sense and reconstruct their surroundings. However, the JCAS operation yields multiple design challenges that need to be addressed. To this end, this thesis aims to develop novel algorithms in two relevant research areas that comprise self-interference (SI) cancellation and beamforming optimization techniques for JCAS systems.
This work analyzes the potential sensing performance of mobile cellular networks, proposing a joint framework and identifying the main radar processing techniques to support JCAS. The fundamental SI challenge stemming from the simultaneous operation of the transmitter and receiver is investigated, and different JCAS cancellation techniques are proposed. The performance and feasibility of the proposed JCAS system is evaluated through simulation and measurement experiments at different frequency bands and scenarios, identifying mm-wave frequencies as the key enabler for future JCAS systems.
Alternative antenna architectures and beamforming methods for mm-wave JCAS platforms are proposed by considering both communication and sensing requirements. Specifically, this thesis proposes novel beamforming methods that provide multiple beams, supporting efficient beamformed communications while an additional beam senses the environment simultaneously. In addition, the proposed beam-forming algorithms address the SI challenge by implementing an efficient spatial suppression scheme to suppress the direct transmitter–receiver coupling
