Signal Subspace Processing in the Beam Space of a True Time Delay Beamformer Bank
A number of techniques for Radio Frequency (RF) source location for wide bandwidth signals have been described that utilize coherent signal subspace processing, but often suffer from limitations such as the requirement for preliminary source location estimation, the need to apply the technique iteratively, computational expense or others. This dissertation examines a method that performs subspace processing of the data from a bank of true time delay beamformers. The spatial diversity of the beamformer bank alleviates the need for a preliminary estimate while simultaneously reducing the dimensionality of subsequent signal subspace processing resulting in computational efficiency. The pointing direction of the true time delay beams is independent of frequency, which results in a mapping from element space to beam space that is wide bandwidth in nature. This dissertation reviews previous methods, introduces the present method, presents simulation results that demonstrate the assertions, discusses an analysis of performance in relation to the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) with various levels of noise in the system, and discusses computational efficiency. One limitation of the method is that in practice it may be appropriate for systems that can tolerate a limited field of view. The application of Electronic Intelligence is one such application. This application is discussed as one that is appropriate for a method exhibiting high resolution of very wide bandwidth closely spaced sources and often does not require a wide field of view. In relation to system applications, this dissertation also discusses practical employment of the novel method in terms of antenna elements, arrays, platforms, engagement geometries, and other parameters. The true time delay beam space method is shown through modeling and simulation to be capable of resolving closely spaced very wideband sources over a relevant field of view in a single algorithmic pass, requiring no course preliminary estimation, and exhibiting low computational expense superior to many previous wideband coherent integration techniques

3-D Beamspace ML Based Bearing Estimator Incorporating Frequency Diversity and Interference Cancellation
The problem of low-angle radar tracking utilizing an array of antennas is considered. In the low-angle environment, echoes return from a low flying target via a specular path as well as a direct path. The problem is compounded by the fact that the two signals arrive within a beamwidth of each other and are usually fully correlated, or coherent. In addition, the SNR at each antenna element is typically low and only a small number of data samples, or snapshots, is available for processing due to the rapid movement of the target. Theoretical studies indicates that the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method is the only reliable estimation procedure in this type of scenario. However, the classical ML estimator involves a multi-dimensional search over a multi-modal surface and is consequently computationally burdensome. In order to facilitate real time processing, we here propose the idea of beamspace domain processing in which the element space snapshot vectors are first operated on by a reduced Butler matrix composed of three orthogonal beamforming weight vectors facilitating a simple, closed-form Beamspace Domain ML (BDML) estimator for the direct and specular path angles. The computational simplicity of the method arises from the fact that the respective beams associated with the three columns of the reduced Butler matrix have all but three nulls in common. The performance of the BDML estimator is enhanced by incorporating the estimation of the complex reflection coefficient and the bisector angle, respectively, for the symmetric and nonsymmetric multipath cases. To minimize the probability of track breaking, the use of frequency diversity is incorporated. The concept of coherent signal subspace processing is invoked as a means for retaining the computational simplicity of single frequency operation. With proper selection of the auxiliary frequencies, it is shown that perfect focusing may be achieved without iterating. In order to combat the effects of strong interfering sources, a novel scheme is presented for adaptively forming the three beams which retains the feature of common nulls
Performance analysis of direction of arrival algorithms for Smart Antenna
This paper presents the performance analysis of the direction of arrival estimation algorithms such as Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique (ESPRIT), Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC), Weighted Subspace Fitting (WSF), The Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR or capon) and beamspace. These algorithms are necessary to overcome the problem of detecting the arrival angles of the received signals in wireless communication. Therefore, these algorithms are evaluated and compared according to several constraints required in smart antenna system parameters, as the number of array elements, number of samples (snapshots), and number of the received signals. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the best estimation of the direction of arrival, which can be perfectly implemented in a smart antenna system. In this context, the ROOT-Weighted Subspace Fitting algorithm provides the most accurate detection of arrival angles in each of the proposed scenarios
Development of a Resource Manager Framework for Adaptive Beamformer Selection
Adaptive digital beamforming (DBF) algorithms are designed to mitigate the effects of interference and noise in the electromagnetic (EM) environment encountered by modern electronic support (ES) receivers. Traditionally, an ES receiver employs a single adaptive DBF algorithm that is part of the design of the receiver system. While the traditional form of receiver implementation is effective in many scenarios it has inherent limitations. This dissertation proposes a new ES receiver framework capable of overcoming the limitations of traditional ES receivers. The proposed receiver framework is capable of forming multiple, independent, simultaneous adaptive digital beams toward multiple signals of interest in an electromagnetic environment. The main contribution of the research is the development, validation, and verification of a resource manager (RM) algorithm. The RM estimates a set of parameters that characterizes the electromagnetic environment and selects an adaptive digital beam forming DBF algorithm for implementation toward all each signal of interest (SOI) in the environment. Adaptive DBF algorithms are chosen by the RM based upon their signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) improvement ratio and their computational complexity. The proposed receiver framework is demonstrated to correctly estimate the desired electromagnetic parameters and select an adaptive DBF from the LUT
Analysis of and techniques for adaptive equalization for underwater acoustic communication

in ocean science, defense, and homeland security. Acoustics remains the only practical
means of accomplishing long-range communication in the ocean. The acoustic
communication channel is fraught with difficulties including limited available bandwidth,
long delay-spread, time-variability, and Doppler spreading. These difficulties
reduce the reliability of the communication system and make high data-rate communication
challenging. Adaptive decision feedback equalization is a common method to
compensate for distortions introduced by the underwater acoustic channel. Limited
work has been done thus far to introduce the physics of the underwater channel into
improving and better understanding the operation of a decision feedback equalizer.
This thesis examines how to use physical models to improve the reliability and reduce
the computational complexity of the decision feedback equalizer. The specific topics
covered by this work are: how to handle channel estimation errors for the time varying
channel, how to use angular constraints imposed by the environment into an array
receiver, what happens when there is a mismatch between the true channel order and
the estimated channel order, and why there is a performance difference between the
direct adaptation and channel estimation based methods for computing the equalizer
coefficients. For each of these topics, algorithms are provided that help create a more
robust equalizer with lower computational complexity for the underwater channel.This work would not have been possible without support from the O ce of Naval

Convergent communication, sensing and localization in 6g systems: An overview of technologies, opportunities and challenges
Herein, we focus on convergent 6G communication, localization and sensing systems by identifying key technology enablers, discussing their underlying challenges, implementation issues, and recommending potential solutions. Moreover, we discuss exciting new opportunities for integrated localization and sensing applications, which will disrupt traditional design principles and revolutionize the way we live, interact with our environment, and do business. Regarding potential enabling technologies, 6G will continue to develop towards even higher frequency ranges, wider bandwidths, and massive antenna arrays. In turn, this will enable sensing solutions with very fine range, Doppler, and angular resolutions, as well as localization to cm-level degree of accuracy. Besides, new materials, device types, and reconfigurable surfaces will allow network operators to reshape and control the electromagnetic response of the environment. At the same time, machine learning and artificial intelligence will leverage the unprecedented availability of data and computing resources to tackle the biggest and hardest problems in wireless communication systems. As a result, 6G will be truly intelligent wireless systems that will provide not only ubiquitous communication but also empower high accuracy localization and high-resolution sensing services. They will become the catalyst for this revolution by bringing about a unique new set of features and service capabilities, where localization and sensing will coexist with communication, continuously sharing the available resources in time, frequency, and space. This work concludes by highlighting foundational research challenges, as well as implications and opportunities related to privacy, security, and trust
