    With an aging population and a greater desire for independence, the dangers of falling incidents in the elderly have become particularly pronounced. In light of this, several technologies have been developed with the aim of preventing or monitoring falls. Failing to strike the balance between several factors including reliability, complexity and invasion of privacy has seen prohibitive in the uptake of these systems. Some systems rely on cameras being mounted in all rooms of a user's home while others require being worn 24 hours a day. This paper explores a system using a humanoid NAO robot with dual vertically mounted cameras to perform the task of fall detection

    The increase in computational power and the networking abilities of home appliances are revolutionizing the way we interact with our homes. This trend is growing stronger and opening a number of technological challenges. From the point of view of distributed systems, there is a need to design architectures for enhancing the comfort and safety of the home, which deal with issues of heterogeneity, scalability and openness. By considering the evolution of domotic research and projects, we advocate a role for web services in the domestic network, and propose an infrastructure based on web services. As a case study, we present an implementation for monitoring the health of an elder adult using multiple sensors and clients

    ANGELAH: A Framework for Assisting Elders At Home

    The ever growing percentage of elderly people within modern societies poses welfare systems under relevant stress. In fact, partial and progressive loss of motor, sensorial, and/or cognitive skills renders elders unable to live autonomously, eventually leading to their hospitalization. This results in both relevant emotional and economic costs. Ubiquitous computing technologies can offer interesting opportunities for in-house safety and autonomy. However, existing systems partially address in-house safety requirements and typically focus on only elder monitoring and emergency detection. The paper presents ANGELAH, a middleware-level solution integrating both ”elder monitoring and emergency detection” solutions and networking solutions. ANGELAH has two main features: i) it enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed at home for emergency detection and ii) provides a solid framework for creating and managing rescue teams composed of individuals willing to promptly assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of ANGELAH, designed for a case study for helping elders with vision impairments, is developed and interesting results are obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed

    Visual Sensor Based Abnormal Event Detection with Moving Shadow Removal in Home Healthcare Applications

    Vision-based abnormal event detection for home healthcare systems can be greatly improved using visual sensor-based techniques able to detect, track and recognize objects in the scene. However, in moving object detection and tracking processes, moving cast shadows can be misclassified as part of objects or moving objects. Shadow removal is an essential step for developing video surveillance systems. The goal of the primary is to design novel computer vision techniques that can extract objects more accurately and discriminate between abnormal and normal activities. To improve the accuracy of object detection and tracking, our proposed shadow removal algorithm is employed. Abnormal event detection based on visual sensor by using shape features variation and 3-D trajectory is presented to overcome the low fall detection rate. The experimental results showed that the success rate of detecting abnormal events was 97% with a false positive rate of 2%. Our proposed algorithm can allow distinguishing diverse fall activities such as forward falls, backward falls, and falling asides from normal activities

    We have designed an automated visual surveillance system for monitoring sleeping infants. The low-level image processing is implemented on an embedded Xilinx’s Virtex II XC2v6000 FPGA and quantifies the level of scene activity using a specially designed background subtraction algorithm. We present our algorithm and show how we have optimised it for this platform

    A Big Bang–Big Crunch Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System for Machine-Vision-Based Event Detection and Summarization in Real-World Ambient-Assisted Living

    The area of ambient-assisted living (AAL) focuses on developing new technologies, which can improve the quality of life and care provided to elderly and disabled people. In this paper, we propose a novel system based on 3-D RGB-D vision sensors and interval type-2 fuzzy-logic-based systems (IT2FLSs) employing the big bang-big crunch algorithm for the real-time automatic detection and summarization of important events and human behaviors from the large-scale data. We will present several real-world experiments, which were conducted for AAL-related behaviors with various users. It will be shown that the proposed BB-BC IT2FLSs outperform the type-1 fuzzy logic system counterparts as well as other conventional nonfuzzy methods, and the performance improves when the number of subjects increases

    Automatic fall incident detection in compressed video for intelligent homecare

    [[abstract]]This paper presents a compressed-domain fall incident detection scheme for intelligent homecare applications. First, a compressed-domain object segmentation scheme is performed to extract moving objects based on global motion estimation and local motion clustering. After detecting the moving objects, three compressed-domain features of each object are then extracted for identifying and locating fall incidents. The proposed system can differentiate fall-down from squatting by taking into account the event duration.
