The power system transition to smart grids brings challenges to electricity distribution network development since it involves several stakeholders and actors whose needs must be met to be successful for the electricity network upgrade. The technological challenges arise mainly from the various distributed energy resources (DERs) integration and use and network optimization and security. End-customers play a central role in future network operations. Understanding the network’s evolution through possible network operational scenarios could create a dedicated and reliable roadmap for the various stakeholders’ use. This paper presents a method to develop the evolving operational scenarios and related management schemes, including microgrid control functionalities, and analyzes the evolution of electricity distribution networks considering medium and low voltage grids. The analysis consists of the dynamic descriptions of network operations and the static illustrations of the relationships among classified actors. The method and analysis use an object-oriented and standardized software modeling language, the unified modeling language (UML). Operational descriptions for the four evolution phases of electricity distribution networks are defined and analyzed by Enterprise Architect, a UML tool. This analysis is followed by the active management architecture schemes with the microgrid control functionalities. The graphical models and analysis generated can be used for scenario building in roadmap development, real-time simulations, and management system development. The developed method, presented with high-level use cases (HL-UCs), can be further used to develop and analyze several parallel running control algorithms for DERs providing ancillary services (ASs) in the evolving electricity distribution networks.© 2021 by the authors. The rapidly expanding power system grid infrastructure and the need to reduce the occurrence of major blackouts and prevention or hardening of systems against cyber-attacks, have led to increased interest in the improved resilience of the electrical grid. Distributed and decentralized control have been widely applied to computer science research. However, for power system applications, the real-time application of decentralized and distributed control algorithms introduce several challenges. In this dissertation, new algorithms and methods for decentralized control, protection and energy management of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) and the Active Distribution Network (ADN) are developed to improve the resiliency of the power system. To evaluate the findings of this dissertation, a laboratory-scale integrated Wide WAMPAC and ADN control platform was designed and implemented. The developed platform consists of phasor measurement units (PMU), intelligent electronic devices (IED) and programmable logic controllers (PLC). On top of the designed hardware control platform, a multi-agent cyber-physical interoperability viii framework was developed for real-time verification of the developed decentralized and distributed algorithms using local wireless and Internet-based cloud communication. A novel real-time multiagent system interoperability testbed was developed to enable utility independent private microgrids standardized interoperability framework and define behavioral models for expandability and plug-and-play operation. The state-of-theart power system multiagent framework is improved by providing specific attributes and a deliberative behavior modeling capability. The proposed multi-agent framework is validated in a laboratory based testbed involving developed intelligent electronic device prototypes and actual microgrid setups. Experimental results are demonstrated for both decentralized and distributed control approaches. A new adaptive real-time protection and remedial action scheme (RAS) method using agent-based distributed communication was developed for autonomous hybrid AC/DC microgrids to increase resiliency and continuous operability after fault conditions. Unlike the conventional consecutive time delay-based overcurrent protection schemes, the developed technique defines a selectivity mechanism considering the RAS of the microgrid after fault instant based on feeder characteristics and the location of the IEDs. The experimental results showed a significant improvement in terms of resiliency of microgrids through protection using agent-based distributed communication

The high proliferation of converter-dominated Distributed Renewable Energy Sources (DRESs) at the distribution grid level has gradually replaced the conventional synchronous generators (SGs) of the transmission system, resulting in emerging stability and security challenges. The inherent characteristics of the SGs are currently used for providing ancillary services (ASs), following the instructions of the Transmission System Operator, while the DRESs are obliged to o er specific system support functions, without being remunerated for these functions, but only for the energy they inject. This changing environment has prompted the integration of energy storage systems as a solution for transfusing new characteristics and elaborating their business in the electricity markets, while the smart grid infrastructure and the upcoming microgrid architectures contribute to the transformation of the distribution grid. This review investigates the existing ASs in transmission system with the respective markets (emphasizing the DRESs’ participation in these markets) and proposes new ASs at distribution grid level, with emphasis to inertial response, active power ramp rate control, frequency response, voltage regulation, fault contribution and harmonic mitigation. The market tools and mechanisms for the procurement of these ASs are presented evolving the existing role of the Operators. Finally, potential barriers in the technical, regulatory, and financial framework have been identified and analyzed.Unión Europea (Programa Horizonte 2020) 76409

Numerous systems require the capability to switch their operational modes seamlessly without any disruptions. The "Synced Parallel Control Paths" method is an innovative control system architecture designed for seamless mode switching. It features multiple parallel control paths: the primary path for essential operational references, and the auxiliary paths that continuously align with the primary, ensuring synchronized operation. This reduces operational disruptions common in traditional systems during mode transitions. This approach enhances system stability, reliability, and adaptability, making it a significant advancement in control technology for a variety of dynamic systems

Various approaches for power balancing in grid-connected and islanded microgrids

One of the promising solutions to reduce power imbalance, an undesired impact of intermittent renewable energy sources, is to supply the loads by means of local distributed energy resources in the form of a microgrid. Microgrids offer several benefits such as reduction of line losses, increased system reliability, and maximum utilisation of local energy resources. A microgrid, during its islanded operation, is more susceptible to the frequency and voltage fluctuation caused by a sudden dispatch either from the generation or load. Therefore, additional control is required to manage either the output power from the generation side or the demand from the end-user side. Thus, appropriate and efficient control and monitoring systems need to be installed. However, the cost of such a system will reduce the rate of investment return on microgrid projects. This research has focused on developing various techniques to maintain the voltage and frequency within acceptable limits in microgrids, taking into account various influencing factors. This study proposes an additional active power management technique through the use of inverters, that can maintain the microgrid’s frequency when the generated power in the microgrid is much higher than its demand. Also, to facilitate the microgrid’s transition from grid-connected to islanded mode, the inverters can be controlled with a soft starting ramp. Moreover, a control function employing a droop control method is proposed in order to reduce the output power of the renewable sources when the microgrid frequency is much higher than the nominal frequency. On the other hand, when the demand is higher than the generated power, managing the demand under a demand response program is proposed as a means of maintaining the microgrid stability. This is an inexpensive solution which will not reduce the rate of investment return on the microgrid project. However, this requires the installation of appropriate enabling technologies at the utility and end-user sides. Moreover, the participation from demand response participants is influenced by the profit earned from engaging in the program. Therefore, in this research, the technical and economic benefits of demand response deployment are analysed in detail. The execution of the demand response program through load-shifting, reducing the appliances’ consumed power, and load-shedding causes customer discomfort. To minimise this discomfort, in this thesis, suitable strategies are suggested for various groups of loads. Furthermore, each load profile contains information on its capacity, flexibility, and operating time. The proposed approach ensures that the loads with a larger capacity and flexibility are the most preferred ones to be controlled during demand response events so that customer discomfort and the number of affected loads can be minimised. Also, this study examines the load’s economic value, power losses, emission factor, and cost of energy production to maximise the microgrid operator’s profit as a result of deploying the demand response program. Meanwhile, to encourage end-users’ engagement in demand response programs, the microgrid operator should offer incentives to the customer as compensation for any incurred costs and discomfort felt. The given incentives should be such that both the microgrid operator and the end-user gain the maximum profit. Therefore, this study proposes an approach for calculating the level of incentives that should be given to the participants by comparing the differences between ongoing revenue and the cost of energy with and without demand response

The aim of this thesis is to define and study the key elements and the main characteris-tics of the integration of the low voltage (LV) distribution systems to distribution auto-mation (DA). The key elements are defined by studying the development of essential systems in LV distribution networks as well as by studying the development of the net-works by way of evolution phases. The key elements and the main characteristics of the integration to DA are illustrated by a certain model of a LV distribution network under its development. For a start DA is reviewed by generally used functions and by technologies. The review includes the data and the information systems and in addition the communication net-works are studied generally. Thereafter the main elements of LV distribution networks are presented and their evolution visions are introduced. The main elements comprises of the distribution network, distributed generation, smart energy metering, electric vehicles and energy storages. The approach to the integration is the evolution of LV distribution networks, so four main evolution phases are introduced; traditional, boom of distributed generation, mi-crogrid and intelligent microgrid. The evolution phases bases on general research publi-cations and visions of Smart Grids. Management architectures for the networks are pre-sented. Also requirements for communication are evaluated by studying the number of nodes, capacity requirements for transferred data types and fault and event frequencies. In order to define a proposal for integrating LV distribution networks to DA, the man-agement architectures and the studied requirements are compared to produce functions for DA. As a result, the proposal is presented based on the studied architectures and re-quirements. In addition considerable issues are introduced relating to the functions in devices or sub-systems, which are needed for DA applications. This thesis indicates the need for further studies, such as: Which are the desired DA functions to be extended to LV distribution networks? Which device or system should offer the desired functions? How well the potential protocols using some media type serves the functions?fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format
