Obstacle Sensing Autonomous Mobile Robot
The aim of this project is to design an autonomous mobile robot that have the ability to sense and avoid obstacles with considerable amount of cost. The robot is requires to have its own movement based on sensor and programmed microcontroller. A software architecture for electro-mobility services: a milestone for sustainable remote vehicle capabilities
To face the tough competition, changing markets and technologies in automotive industry,
automakers have to be highly innovative. In the previous decades, innovations were
electronics and IT-driven, which increased exponentially the complexity of vehicle’s internal
network. Furthermore, the growing expectations and preferences of customers oblige these
manufacturers to adapt their business models and to also propose mobility-based services.
One other hand, there is also an increasing pressure from regulators to significantly reduce
the environmental footprint in transportation and mobility, down to zero in the foreseeable
future.
This dissertation investigates an architecture for communication and data exchange
within a complex and heterogeneous ecosystem. This communication takes place between
various third-party entities on one side, and between these entities and the infrastructure
on the other. The proposed solution reduces considerably the complexity of vehicle
communication and within the parties involved in the ODX life cycle. In such an
heterogeneous environment, a particular attention is paid to the protection of confidential
and private data. Confidential data here refers to the OEM’s know-how which is enclosed
in vehicle projects. The data delivered by a car during a vehicle communication session
might contain private data from customers. Our solution ensures that every entity of this
ecosystem has access only to data it has the right to. We designed our solution to be
non-technological-coupling so that it can be implemented in any platform to benefit from
the best environment suited for each task. We also proposed a data model for vehicle
projects, which improves query time during a vehicle diagnostic session. The scalability and
the backwards compatibility were also taken into account during the design phase of our
solution.
We proposed the necessary algorithms and the workflow to perform an efficient vehicle
diagnostic with considerably lower latency and substantially better complexity time and
space than current solutions. To prove the practicality of our design, we presented a
prototypical implementation of our design. Then, we analyzed the results of a series of tests
we performed on several vehicle models and projects. We also evaluated the prototype
against quality attributes in software engineering
Many-Task Computing and Blue Waters
This report discusses many-task computing (MTC) generically and in the
context of the proposed Blue Waters systems, which is planned to be the largest
NSF-funded supercomputer when it begins production use in 2012. The aim of this
report is to inform the BW project about MTC, including understanding aspects
of MTC applications that can be used to characterize the domain and
understanding the implications of these aspects to middleware and policies.
Many MTC applications do not neatly fit the stereotypes of high-performance
computing (HPC) or high-throughput computing (HTC) applications. Like HTC
applications, by definition MTC applications are structured as graphs of
discrete tasks, with explicit input and output dependencies forming the graph
edges. However, MTC applications have significant features that distinguish
them from typical HTC applications. In particular, different engineering
constraints for hardware and software must be met in order to support these
applications. HTC applications have traditionally run on platforms such as
grids and clusters, through either workflow systems or parallel programming
systems. MTC applications, in contrast, will often demand a short time to
solution, may be communication intensive or data intensive, and may comprise
very short tasks. Therefore, hardware and software for MTC must be engineered
to support the additional communication and I/O and must minimize task dispatch
overheads. The hardware of large-scale HPC systems, with its high degree of
parallelism and support for intensive communication, is well suited for MTC
applications. However, HPC systems often lack a dynamic resource-provisioning
feature, are not ideal for task communication via the file system, and have an
I/O system that is not optimized for MTC-style applications. Hence, additional
software support is likely to be required to gain full benefit from the HPC
hardware
A Path toward User Control of Online Profiling
Online profiling is the practice of tracking information about consumers\u27 interests by monitoring their movements online. A primary purpose of online profiling is to deliver advertising tailored to the individual\u27s interests, a practice known as online behavioral advertising (OBA). In order to accomplish this, publishers and advertisers track a individual\u27s online behavior using cookies and other means. Publishers and advertisers aggregate the information, often compile it with information from offline sources, and sort individuals into groups based on characteristics such as age, income, and hobbies. Advertisers can then purchase access to these consumer groups, controlling their selections with such specificity that one commentator has compared the process of choosing the most desirable targets to fishing from a barrel. Part I of this Note presents an overview of the technologies that enable online profiling and the ways in which the online advertising industry uses gathered information to target users. Part II argues that legislation regulating online profiling is necessary because profiling is a harmful practice that users cannot prevent and for which no remedy is available. Part III examines the FTC\u27s recent proposal for a \u27do not track\u27 mechanism and proposes elements that future legislation should include in order to allow this mechanism to effectively address some of the concerns online profiling raises

FRAME: frame routing and manipulation engine
This research reports on the design and implementation of FRAME: an embedded hardware network processing platform designed to perform network frame manipulation and monitoring. This is possible at line speeds compliant with the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. The system provides frame manipulation functionality to aid in the development and implementation of network testing environments. Platform cost and ease of use are both considered during design resulting in fabrication of hardware and the development of Link, a Domain Specific Language used to create custom applications that are compatible with the platform. Functionality of the resulting platform is shown through conformance testing of designed modules and application examples. Throughput testing showed that the peak throughput achievable by the platform is limited to 86.4 Mbit/s, comparable to commodity 100 Mbit hardware and the total cost of the prototype platform ranged between 254
Mobile Robotics Platform
Students, particularly those that will be studying in upper-tier Unified Robotics courses at WPI, are in need of a robotics platform that will provide a foundation facilitating laboratory demonstrations and experiments on theoretical concepts in robotics, as well as a basis for robotic projects, allowing a focus on more complicated subjects instead of getting a system up and running first. The main purpose of this project is to design and prototype a modular robotics base that will fulfill the needs of these intended audiences. This base will be modular, allowing mechanical, electronic, and software modifications while maintaining an ease-of-use approach

In the leading universities of the developed countries, studies on Web-Based Education have started and in an increasing manner are going strong. In the last few years, the leading universities of Turkey are also greatly interested in Web-Based Education and have started their re-structuring accordingly.The goal of this study is to design a basic model to be utilized by a university aiming to offer web-based distance education. In achieving this; by the use of system approach, a model comprising of three subsystems, namely system analysis, system design and evaluation&control, working in coordination with each other, has been tried to be proposed. There may be only one missing point of this study, that is; since preparing a lesson or program according to this model was not foreseen in this thesis, the effectiveness evaluations suggested in the evaluation&control subsystem could not be realized. It is recommended to realize such an evaluation in a further study to make it possible to reveal the effectiveness of web-based education by preparing a lesson or program according to this model.On the other hand, a survey has been conducted in Turkey in some of the universities either offering web-based education or are interested in studies in this field.The aim of this survey is to analyze from system design point of view the studies carried out in our universities on this matter and to get a picture of the existing situation.The directed questions aiming this were prepared by taking into consideration of the three stages of system design subsystem, i.e. administrative design, educational design, and technological design. It is intended for the result of this survey to shed light to the new-coming institutions in this field. As a matter of fact, each stage of this subsystem is a survey item itself and should be researched one by one in other studies.Furthermore, for individuals interested in distance education and web-based distance education and for people newly involved in this matter, this thesis is intended to be a reference material and to serve this purpose the sections are prepared containing the basic information accordingly. Nevertheless, since most of the information regarding system design are prepared without taking into consideration the disabled people, the relevant information are not complete. In another study, the offering of the web-based education to the disabled people, especially for deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, and blind students, has to be investigated.Finally, in this thesis the proposed model for the Web-Based Distance Education, as being a basic and conceptual model, has a flexible structure; i.e., suitable for all the institutions and establishments intending to offer the web-based education.What is important here, is to exploit the potential sources within the institution that will display the required systematic approach
