Completing contracts ex post: How car manufacturers manage car dealers
This article illustrates how contracts are completed ex post in practice and, in so doing, indirectly suggests what the real function of contracts may be. Our evidence comes from the contracts between automobile manufacturers and their dealers in 23 dealership networks in Spain. Franchising dominates automobile distribution because of the need to decentralize pricing and control of service decisions. It motivates local managers to undertake these activities at minimum cost for the manufacturer. However, it creates incentive conflicts, both between manufacturers and dealers and among dealers themselves, concerning the level of sales and service provided. It also holds potential for expropriation of specific investments. Contracts deal with these conflicts by restricting dealers’ decision rights and granting manufacturers extensive completion, monitoring and enforcement powers. The main mechanism that may prevent abuse of these powers is the manufacturers’ reputational capital.Franchising, incomplete contracts, self-enforcement, automobile
Social Inequality and Diversity of Families Working Report (April 2010)
In this state‐of‐art report we focus on some of the more relevant issues from the
perspective of social inequality and families within and across European societies. We
begin by addressing the three main topics included in this existential field by the Family
Platform Project: migration, poverty, family violence. Additionally, we will look at two
key issues which are important in contextualizing and discussing the above‐mentioned
topics. First, we will summarize recent trends in social inequality in European societies.
Secondly, we will review some of existing research on the relationship between social
inequalities and families, by examining the impact of social inequality on family forms
and dynamics as well as the transmission and reproduction of inequalities within
families. Social inequality shapes family life, but families and their members must also
be seen as actors in the system of inequality (transmitting inequalities to subsequent
generations, reproducing them within the home and through their networks, and
resisting the effects of inequality).
Research review in this existential field was carried out separately on each of the abovementioned
topics. Migration, poverty and family violence are large and autonomous
fields of research which do not have common theoretical and methodological
underpinnings or empirical data sets. For this report it was therefore important to grasp
the major trends and findings within each research topic before moving on to broader
conclusions on research into social inequalities and diversity of families in Europe.FAMILYPLATFORM (SSH‐2009‐3.2.2 Social platform on research for families and

A criminological reading of the concept of vulnerability: a case study of Brazilian trafficking victims
The United Nations Trafficking Protocol establishes the ‘abuse of a position of vulnerability’ as one of the means used to traffic persons. This term, however, was not properly defined, leaving it open for multiple interpretations, many of which do not focus on the well-being of the supposedly vulnerable victims. Through a case study of how (potential) Brazilian victims of trafficking are dealt with in Brazil and (to a lesser extent) outside the country, this article focuses on how ‘vulnerability’ is often interpreted as a synonym of strain which leads to deviant behavior. In this way, the concept is co-opted to enable the punishment or restraint of certain people (particularly women from developing countries) who are considered to be unsuitable to migrate
Pedro Almodóvar and Icíar Bollaín on Gender Violence in Spanish Cinema
This study sought to determine whether Franco-period conservatism and traditionalist values played a role in the portrayal of women, as well as gender violence, in the post-Transition cinema of Pedro Almodóvar and Icíar Bollaín. Four of Almodóvar's movies were studied and categorized in two parts: pre and post 2000's. From Bollaín, three movies were studied, all released after the year 2000. The year 2000 is marked to represent a change in Spanish society's views of gender violence and governmental action was taken to protect women in abusive relationships. The study finds that while traditionalist ideals from the Franco regime are clearly represented in both Almodóvar and Bollaín's films, the purpose is primarily to show a distinction between the oppressive period against women and the obstacles women must battle for equal liberties in relationships and society after the Transition, showing that although Francisco Franco has not been in power, the morals from his time as dictator have a lasting effect on women in Spain. No embargoAcademic Major: Spanis
