    The Robert O. Anderson School and Graduate School of Management at The University of New Mexico Period of Report: July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000 Submitted by Howard L. Smith, Dean The Anderson Schools of Management is divided into four distinct divisions- the Department of Accounting; the Department of Finance, International and Technology Management; the Department of Marketing, Information and Decision Sciences; and the Department of Organizational Studies. This structure provides an opportunity for The Anderson Schools to develop four distinct areas of excellence, proven by results reported here. I. Significant Developments During the Academic Year The Anderson Schools of Management • As a result of the multi-year gift from the Ford Motor Company, completed renovation of The Schools\u27 Advisement and Placement Center, as well as all student organization offices. • The Ford gift also provided for $100,000 to support faculty research, case studies and course development. • The Schools revised the MBA curriculum to meet the changing needs of professional, advanced business education. • The Schools updated computer laboratory facilities, with the addition of a 45-unit cluster for teaching and student work. • The faculty and staff of The Schools furthered outreach in economic development activities by participating directly as committee members and leaders in the cluster workgroups of the Next Generation Economy Initiative. • The faculty, staff and students of The Schools contributed to the development of the Ethics in Business Awards; particularly exciting was the fact that all nominee packages were developed by student teams from The Anderson Schools. • The Schools continue to generate more credit hours per faculty member than any other division of the UNM community. The Accounting Department • Preparation and presentation of a progress report to accrediting body, the AACSB. The Department of Finance, International and Technology Management • The Department continued to focus on expansion of the Management of Technology program as a strategic strength of The Schools. The Department of Marketing. Information and Decision Sciences • Generated 9022 credit hours, with a student enrollment of 3070. The Department of Organizational Studies • Coordinated the 9th UNM Universidad de Guanajuato (UG) Mexico Student Exchange

It is strongly connected to the probabilistic analysis of large combinatorial structures and has fruitful connections to several disciplines, including statistical physics, algebraic combinatorics, graph theory and computer science. This workshop brought together experts from all these various fields, including also computer algebra, with the goal of promoting cooperation and interaction among researchers with largely varying backgrounds

    Classical Algebraic Geometry

    Progress in algebraic geometry often comes through the introduction of new tools and ideas to tackle the classical problems the development of the field. Examples include new invariants that capture some aspect of geometry in a novel way, such as the derived category, and the extension of the class of geometric objects considered to allow constructions not previously possible, such as the transition from varieties to schemes or from schemes to stacks. Many famous old problems and outstanding conjectures have been resolved in this way over the last 50 years. While the new theories are sometimes studied for their own sake, they are in the end best understood in the context of the classical questions they illuminate. The goal of the workshop was to study new developments in algebraic geometry, with a view toward their application to the classical problems

    African American Men and College Mathematics: Gaining Access and Attaining Success

    The research literature regarding African American male college students reports that they often experience difficulties with mathematics (Stage & Kloosterman, 1995; Treisman, 1992). It is also reported that many African American students enter college seeking to complete their degrees in mathematics and science, but few of these students successfully complete the core requirements (Hrabowski, Maton, & Greif, 1998; Treisman, 1992). In spite of these reported trends, there are some African American male students who, indeed, achieve in college mathematics. The purpose of this study was to analyze how being African American and male might play out in the college mathematics experiences of high-achieving African American men. Employing qualitative research methodology, specifically, multiple case study research (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007; Merriam, 1998) situated in critical race theory (CRT; Bell, 1992; Tate, 1997), I administered a survey instrument, conducted three interviews, and solicited artifacts from four African American men who are currently pursuing graduate degrees in mathematics or mathematics education. Coupling multiple case study research with CRT, I explored how they gained access to college mathematics, how they achieved in college mathematics, and how their race and/or racism affected their performance in mathematics. An analysis of the data revealed that the participants’ achievement and persistence in mathematics was explained, in part, by the participants’ (a) internal characteristics such as strong cultural identities as African American men, persistent attitudes, and spiritual connections; (b) ability to negotiate racial injustices as African American men; (c) positive mathematics identities developed as undergraduate mathematics majors at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs); and (d) positive outlooks concerning the participation of African American male students in mathematics. Findings from the study suggest that methodological and theoretical approaches that foreground race and utilize “voice” must be employed in mathematics education research, especially regarding African American male students. Furthermore, findings suggest that those invested in the mathematics education of African American male students should ensure that African American male students are granted access to mathematics, including at the collegiate level
