    Fragments of ML Decidable by Nested Data Class Memory Automata

    The call-by-value language RML may be viewed as a canonical restriction of Standard ML to ground-type references, augmented by a "bad variable" construct in the sense of Reynolds. We consider the fragment of (finitary) RML terms of order at most 1 with free variables of order at most 2, and identify two subfragments of this for which we show observational equivalence to be decidable. The first subfragment consists of those terms in which the P-pointers in the game semantic representation are determined by the underlying sequence of moves. The second subfragment consists of terms in which the O-pointers of moves corresponding to free variables in the game semantic representation are determined by the underlying moves. These results are shown using a reduction to a form of automata over data words in which the data values have a tree-structure, reflecting the tree-structure of the threads in the game semantic plays. In addition we show that observational equivalence is undecidable at every third- or higher-order type, every second-order type which takes at least two first-order arguments, and every second-order type (of arity greater than one) that has a first-order argument which is not the final argument

    AbstractWe investigate the decidability of observational equivalence and approximation in Reynolds’ “Syntactic Control of Interference” (SCI), a prototypical functional-imperative language in which covert interference between functions and their arguments is prevented by the use of an affine typing discipline.By associating denotations of terms in a fully abstract “relational” model of finitary basic SCI (due to Reddy) with multitape finite state automata, we show that observational approximation is not decidable (even at first order), but that observational equivalence is decidable for all terms.We then consider the same problems for basic SCI extended with non-local control in the form of backwards jumps. We show that both observational approximation and observational equivalence are decidable in this “observably sequential” version of the language by describing a fully abstract games model in which strategies are regular languages

    Interval vs. Point Temporal Logic Model Checking: an Expressiveness Comparison

    Model checking is a powerful method widely explored in formal verification to check the (state-transition) model of a system against desired properties of its behaviour. Classically, properties are expressed by formulas of a temporal logic, such as LTL, CTL, and CTL*. These logics are "point-wise" interpreted, as they describe how the system evolves state-by-state. On the contrary, Halpern and Shoham\u27s interval temporal logic (HS) is "interval-wise" interpreted, thus allowing one to naturally express properties of computation stretches, spanning a sequence of states, or properties involving temporal aggregations, which are inherently "interval-based". In this paper, we study the expressiveness of HS in model checking, in comparison with that of the standard logics LTL, CTL, and CTL*. To this end, we consider HS endowed with three semantic variants: the state-based semantics, introduced by Montanari et al., which allows branching in the past and in the future, the linear-past semantics, allowing branching only in the future, and the linear semantics, disallowing branching. These variants are compared, as for their expressiveness, among themselves and to standard temporal logics, getting a complete picture. In particular, HS with linear (resp., linear-past) semantics is proved to be equivalent to LTL (resp., finitary CTL*)

    Incompleteness Theorems, Large Cardinals, and Automata over Finite Words

    International audienceWe prove that one can construct various kinds of automata over finite words for which some elementary properties are actually independent from strong set theories like Tn =:ZFC + "There exist (at least) n inaccessible cardinals", for integers n ≄ 0. In particular, we prove independence results for languages of finite words generated by context-free grammars, or accepted by 2-tape or 1-counter automata. Moreover we get some independence results for weighted automata and for some related finitely generated subsemigroups of the set Z ^{3×3} of 3-3 matrices with integer entries. Some of these latter results are independence results from the Peano axiomatic system PA

    On Model-Checking Higher-Order Effectful Programs (Long Version)

    Model-checking is one of the most powerful techniques for verifying systems and programs, which since the pioneering results by Knapik et al., Ong, and Kobayashi, is known to be applicable to functional programs with higher-order types against properties expressed by formulas of monadic second-order logic. What happens when the program in question, in addition to higher-order functions, also exhibits algebraic effects such as probabilistic choice or global store? The results in the literature range from those, mostly positive, about nondeterministic effects, to those about probabilistic effects, in the presence of which even mere reachability becomes undecidable. This work takes a fresh and general look at the problem, first of all showing that there is an elegant and natural way of viewing higher-order programs producing algebraic effects as ordinary higher-order recursion schemes. We then move on to consider effect handlers, showing that in their presence the model checking problem is bound to be undecidable in the general case, while it stays decidable when handlers have a simple syntactic form, still sufficient to capture so-called generic effects. Along the way we hint at how a general specification language could look like, this way justifying some of the results in the literature, and deriving new ones

    Game semantic analysis of equivalence in IMJ

    Using game semantics, we investigate the problem of verifying contextual equivalences in Interface Middleweight Java (IMJ), an imperative object calculus in which program phrases are typed using interfaces. Working in the setting where data types are non-recursive and restricted to finite domains, we identify the frontier between decidability and undecidability by reference to the structure of interfaces present in typing judgments. In particular, we show how to determine the decidability status of problem instances (over a fixed type signature) by examining the position of methods inside the term type and the types of its free identifiers. Our results build upon the recent fully abstract game semantics of IMJ. Decidability is proved by translation into visibly pushdown register automata over infinite alphabets with fresh-input recognition

    Contextual equivalence for state and control via nested data

    We consider contextual equivalence in an ML-like language, where contexts have access to both general references and continuations. We show that in a finitary setting, i.e. when the base types are finite and there is no recursion, the problem is decidable for all programs with first-order references and continuations, assuming they have continuation- and reference-free interfaces. This is the best one can hope for in this case, because the addition of references to functions, to continuations or to references makes the problem undecidable. The result is notable since, unlike earlier work in the area, we need not impose any restrictions on type-theoretic order or the use of first-order references inside terms. In particular, the programs concerned can generate unbounded heaps. Our decidability argument relies on recasting the corresponding fully abstract trace semantics of terms as instances of automata with a decidable equivalence problem. The automata used for this purpose belong to the family of automata over infinite alphabets (aka data automata), where the infinite alphabet (dataset) has the shape of a forest
