    Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming

    The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented. A simulative performance evaluation investigated the impact of Wi-Fi offloading on the QoE and energy consumption of mobile HAS.Die Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Quality of Experience (QoE) – der subjektiv empfundenen Dienstgüte – von adaptivem HTTP Videostreaming (HAS) und mit Verkehrsmanagement, das in Zugangsnetzwerken eingesetzt werden kann, um die QoE des adaptiven Videostreamings zu verbessern. Zuerst wurde der Einfluss von Adaptionsparameters und der Zeit pro Qualitätsstufe auf die QoE von adaptivem Videostreaming mittels subjektiver Crowdsourcingstudien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden benutzt, um die QoE-optimale Adaptionsstrategie für gegebene Videos und Netzwerkbedingungen zu berechnen. Dies ermöglicht Dienstanbietern von Videostreaming verbesserte Adaptionsstrategien für adaptives Videostreaming zu entwerfen und zu benchmarken. Weiterhin untersuchte die Arbeit Konzepte zum Überwachen von QoE von Videostreaming in der Applikation und im Netzwerk, die von Netzwerkbetreibern im Kreislauf des QoE-bewussten Verkehrsmanagements eingesetzt werden können. Außerdem wurde eine analytische und simulative Leistungsbewertung von QoE-bewusstem Verkehrsmanagement auf einer Engpassverbindung durchgeführt. Schließlich untersuchte diese Arbeit sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement für adaptives Videostreaming mittels WLAN Offloading, also dem Auslagern von mobilen Videoflüssen über WLAN Netzwerke. Es wurde ein Modell für die Verteilung von öffentlichen WLAN Zugangspunkte und eine Plattform für sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement auf privaten, häuslichen WLAN Routern vorgestellt. Abschließend untersuchte eine simulative Leistungsbewertung den Einfluss von WLAN Offloading auf die QoE und den Energieverbrauch von mobilem adaptivem Videostreaming

    Systematic Approaches for Telemedicine and Data Coordination for COVID-19 in Baja California, Mexico

Our model is based on human-centric design factors and cross disciplinary collaborations for scalable data-driven enablement of smartphone, cellular, and video Teleconsul-tation technologies to link hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services for point-of-care assessments of COVID testing, and for subsequent treatment and quar-antine decisions. A multidisciplinary team was rapidly created, in cooperation with different institutions, including: the Autonomous University of Baja California, the Ministry of Health, the Command, Communication and Computer Control Center of the Ministry of the State of Baja California (C4), Colleges of Medicine, and the College of Psychologists. Our objective is to provide information to the public and to evaluate COVID-19 in real time and to track, regional, municipal, and state-wide data in real time that informs supply chains and resource allocation with the anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 cases. RESUMEN Proporcionamos un modelo para la implementación sistemática de la telemedicina dentro de un gran centro de evaluación de COVID-19 en el área de Baja California, México. Nuestro modelo se basa en factores de diseño centrados en el ser humano y colaboraciones interdisciplinarias para la habilitación escalable basada en datos de tecnologías de teleconsulta de teléfonos inteligentes, celulares y video para vincular hospitales, clínicas y servicios médicos de emergencia para evaluaciones de COVID en el punto de atención. pruebas, y para el tratamiento posterior y decisiones de cuarentena. He offers a clear-headed analysis of the high stakes in this debate about the Internet's future, and fearlessly refutes the misinformation and misconceptions that about' Professor Rob Freiden, Penn State University Net Neutrality is a very heated and contested policy principle regarding access for content providers to the Internet end-user, and potential discrimination in that access where the end-user's ISP (or another ISP) blocks that access in part or whole. The suggestion has been that the problem can be resolved by either introducing greater competition, or closely policing conditions for vertically integrated service, such as VOIP. However, that is not the whole story, and ISPs as a whole have incentives to discriminate between content for matters such as network management of spam, to secure and maintain customer experience at current levels, and for economic benefit from new Quality of Service standards. This includes offering a ‘priority lane' on the network for premium content types such as video and voice service.     Security Engineering of Patient-Centered Health Care Information Systems in Peer-to-Peer Environments: Systematic Review

    Background: Patient-centered health care information systems (PHSs) enable patients to take control and become knowledgeable about their own health, preferably in a secure environment. Current and emerging PHSs use either a centralized database, peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, or distributed ledger technology for PHS deployment. The evolving COVID-19 decentralized Bluetooth-based tracing systems are examples of disease-centric P2P PHSs. Although using P2P technology for the provision of PHSs can be flexible, scalable, resilient to a single point of failure, and inexpensive for patients, the use of health information on P2P networks poses major security issues as users must manage information security largely by themselves. Objective: This study aims to identify the inherent security issues for PHS deployment in P2P networks and how they can be overcome. In addition, this study reviews different P2P architectures and proposes a suitable architecture for P2P PHS deployment. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) reporting guidelines. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. We searched the following databases: IEEE Digital Library, PubMed, Science Direct, ACM Digital Library, Scopus, and Semantic Scholar. The search was conducted on articles published between 2008 and 2020. The Common Vulnerability Scoring System was used as a guide for rating security issues. Results: Our findings are consolidated into 8 key security issues associated with PHS implementation and deployment on P2P networks and 7 factors promoting them. Moreover, we propose a suitable architecture for P2P PHSs and guidelines for the provision of PHSs while maintaining information security. Conclusions: Despite the clear advantages of P2P PHSs, the absence of centralized controls and inconsistent views of the network on some P2P systems have profound adverse impacts in terms of security. The security issues identified in this study need to be addressed to increase patients\u27 intention to use PHSs on P2P networks by making them safe to use

    Uma abordagem preditiva de DASH QoE baseada em aprendizado de máquina em multi-access edge computing

Os serviços de vídeo que usam técnicas de Dynamic Adaptive Streaming sobre HTTP (DASH) dominaram o tráfego total da Internet para transportar o tráfego de vídeo. Espera-se que as operadoras de rede móvel (Mobile Network Operators - MNOs) continuem atendendo a essa demanda crescente por tráfego de vídeo suportado por DASH, ao mesmo tempo em que fornecem uma alta qualidade de experiência (Quality of Experience - QoE) aos usuários finais. Além disso, as operadoras precisam ter um conhecimento claro acerca da qualidade de vídeo percebida pelos usuários finais e relacioná-la com o monitoramento em nível de rede, ou com informações de telemetria para identificação de problemas, análise da causa raiz e predição de padrões. Para garantir um gerenciamento de tráfego de rede com reconhecimento de QoE, um pré-requisito é que os MNOs monitorem o tráfego de rede passivamente e realizem medições efetivas de indicadores-chave de desempenho (Key Performance Indicators - KPIs) de QoE, como resoluções, eventos de paralisação, entre outros, que influenciam diretamente a percepção do usuário final. Muitas abordagens da literatura foram propostas para medir os KPIs com o objetivo de fornecer uma qualidade de serviço de vídeo aceitável. A maioria das soluções exige consciência de contexto do usuário final, o que não é viável do ponto de vista do MNO. No entanto, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), outra solução mais amplamente usada para estimar os KPIs diretamente do tráfego de rede, não é mais uma solução conveniente para as operadoras devido à adoção de criptografia de streaming de vídeo fim-a-fim sobre TCP (HTTPs) e QUIC. Portanto, o aprendizado de máquina (Machine Learning - ML) passou a ser recentemente aceito como uma solução bem reconhecida para estimar KPIs de QoE, analisando os padrões de tráfego criptografados bem como estatísticas como qualidade de serviço (Quality of Service - QoS). Este trabalho apresenta uma abordagem mais refinada e leve, baseada em aprendizado de máquina, denominada Edge QoE Probe, para estimar QoE do usuário final para o serviço de vídeo DASH, monitorando passivamente o tráfego de rede criptografado na borda da rede. Nossa abordagem pode avaliar vários KPIs de QoE, como por exemplo resolução, taxa de bits, proporção de paralisação, entre outros, tanto em tempo real quanto por sessão. Além disso, neste trabalho investigamos o desempenho do vídeo DASH sobre o protocolo de transporte tradicional TCP (HTTPs) e QUIC. Para este propósito, avaliamos experimentalmente diferentes traces de rede celular em um ambiente emulado de alta fidelidade e comparamos o desempenho comportamental de algoritmos Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABS) considerando KPIs de QoE sobre TCP (HTTPs) e QUIC. Nossos resultados empíricos mostram que os algoritmos tradicionais de ABS usando QUIC como transporte precisariam alterações específicas para melhorar o desempenho em termos de QoE de vídeo baseados em DASHAbstract: Multimedia video services traffic is rapidly growing in mobile networks in recent years. Video services using Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) techniques have dominated the total internet traffic to carry video traffic. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are expected to run on with this growing demand for DASH-supported video traffic while providing a high Quality of Experience (QoE) to the end-users. Besides, operators need to have a crystal notion of video quality perceived by the end-users and correlate them with network-level monitoring or telemetry information for problem identification, root cause analysis, and pattern prediction. To ensure QoE–aware network traffic management, a prerequisite for the MNOs is to monitor the network traffic passively and measure objective QoE Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) (such as resolutions and stalling events) effectively that directly influence end-user subjective feedback. Many literature approaches have been proposed to measure the KPIs aimed to deliver acceptable video service quality. Most of the solutions require end-user awareness, which is not viable from the MNOs' perspective. However, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), another most widely used solution to estimate the KPIs directly from network traffic, is not a convenient solution anymore for the operators due to the adoption of end-to-end video streaming encryption over TCP (HTTPs) and QUIC transport protocol. Hence, in recent, Machine Learning (ML) has been accepted as a well-recognized solution for estimating QoE KPIs by analyzing the encrypted traffic patterns and statistics as Quality of Service (QoS). This work presents an ML-based lightweight and fine-grained Edge QoE Probe approach to estimate the end-user QoE for DASH video service by passively monitoring the encrypted network traffic on the edge of the network. Our approach can assess numerous QoE KPIs (such as resolution, bit-rate, quality switches, startup delay, and stall ratio) both in a real-time and per-session manner. Moreover, we investigate the DASH video service performance over the traditional TCP (HTTPs) and QUIC transport protocol in this work. For this purpose, we experimentally evaluate different cellular network traces in a high-fidelity emulated testbed and compare the behavioral performance of Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABS) algorithms considering QoE KPIs over TCP (HTTPs) and QUIC.     Network-Based Management for Optimising Video Delivery

    The past decade has witnessed a massive increase in Internet video traffic. The Cisco Visual Forecast index indicates that, by 2022, (79%) of the world's mobile data traffic will be video traffic. In order to increase the video streaming market revenue, service providers need to provide services to the end-users characterised by high Quality of Experience (QoE). However, delivering good-quality video services is a very challenging task due to the stringent constraints related to bandwidth and latency requirements in video streaming. Among the available streaming services, HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has become the de facto standard for multimedia delivery over the Internet. HAS is a pull-based approach, since the video player at the client side is responsible for adapting the requested video based on the estimated network conditions. Furthermore, HAS can traverse any firewall or proxy server that lets through standard HTTP data traffic over content delivery networks. Despite the great benefits HAS solutions bring, they also face challenges relating to quality fluctuations when they compete for a shared link. To overcome these issues, the network and video providers must exchange information and cooperate. In this context, Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging technology used to deploy such architecture by providing centralised control for efficient and flexible network management. One of the first problems addressed in this thesis is that of providing QoE-level fairness for the competing HAS players and efficient resource allocation for the available network resources. This has been achieved by presenting a dynamic programming-based algorithm, based on the concept of Max-Min fairness, to provide QoE-level fairness among the competing HAS players. In order to deploy the proposed algorithm, an SDN-based architecture has been presented, named BBGDASH, that leverages the flexibility of the SDN’s management and control to deploy the proposed algorithm on the application and the network level. Another question answered by this thesis is that of how the proposed guidance approach maintains a balance between stability and scalability. To answer this question, a scalable guidance mechanism has been presented that provides guidance to the client without moving the entire control logic to an additional entity or relying purely on the client-side decision. To do so, the guidance scheme provides each client with the optimal bitrate levels to adapt the requested bitrate within the provided levels. Although the proposed BGGDASH can improve the QoE within a wired network, deploying it in a wireless network environment could result in sub-optimal decisions being made due to the high level of fluctuations in the wireless environment. In order to cope with this issue, two time series-based forecasting approaches have been presented to identify the optimal set of bitrate levels for each client based on the network conditions. Additionally, the implementation of the BBGDASH architecture has been extended by proposing an intelligent streaming architecture (named BBGDASH+). Finally, in order to evaluate the feasibility of deploying the bounding bitrate guidance with different network conditions, it has been evaluated under different network conditions to provide generic evaluations. The results show that the proposed algorithms can significantly improve the end-users QoE compared to other compared approaches

    Abandonment and its Impact on P2P VoD Streaming

    Abstract-Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems have evolved from being used for file sharing to delivering streaming video on demand (VoD). The policies adopted in P2P VoD, however, have not taken user viewing behavior -that users abandon videosinto account. We show that abandonment can result in increased interruptions and wasted resources. As a result, we reconsider the set of policies to use in the presence of abandonment. Our goal is to balance the conflicting needs of delivering videos without interruptions while minimizing wastage. We find that an Earliest-First chunk selection policy in conjunction with the Earliest-Deadline peer selection policy allows us to achieve high download rates. We take advantage of abandonment by converting peers to "partial seeds"; this increases capacity. We minimize wastage by using a playback lookahead window. We use analysis and simulation experiments using real-world traces to show the effectiveness of our approach

    Doutoramento em Engenharia EletrotécnicaOver-The-Top (OTT) multimedia delivery is a very appealing approach for providing ubiquitous, exible, and globally accessible services capable of low-cost and unrestrained device targeting. In spite of its appeal, the underlying delivery architecture must be carefully planned and optimized to maintain a high Qualityof- Experience (QoE) and rational resource usage, especially when migrating from services running on managed networks with established quality guarantees. To address the lack of holistic research works on OTT multimedia delivery systems, this Thesis focuses on an end-to-end optimization challenge, considering a migration use-case of a popular Catch-up TV service from managed IP Television (IPTV) networks to OTT. A global study is conducted on the importance of Catch-up TV and its impact in today's society, demonstrating the growing popularity of this time-shift service, its relevance in the multimedia landscape, and tness as an OTT migration use-case. Catch-up TV consumption logs are obtained from a Pay-TV operator's live production IPTV service containing over 1 million subscribers to characterize demand and extract insights from service utilization at a scale and scope not yet addressed in the literature. This characterization is used to build demand forecasting models relying on machine learning techniques to enable static and dynamic optimization of OTT multimedia delivery solutions, which are able to produce accurate bandwidth and storage requirements' forecasts, and may be used to achieve considerable power and cost savings whilst maintaining a high QoE. A novel caching algorithm, Most Popularly Used (MPU), is proposed, implemented, and shown to outperform established caching algorithms in both simulation and experimental scenarios. The need for accurate QoE measurements in OTT scenarios supporting HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) motivates the creation of a new QoE model capable of taking into account the impact of key HAS aspects. By addressing the complete content delivery pipeline in the envisioned content-aware OTT Content Delivery Network (CDN), this Thesis demonstrates that signi cant improvements are possible in next-generation multimedia delivery solutions.A entrega de conteúdos multimédia em Over-The-Top (OTT) e uma proposta atractiva para fornecer um serviço flexível e globalmente acessível, capaz de alcançar qualquer dispositivo, com uma promessa de baixos custos. Apesar das suas vantagens, e necessario um planeamento arquitectural detalhado e optimizado para manter níveis elevados de Qualidade de Experiência (QoE), em particular aquando da migração dos serviços suportados em redes geridas com garantias de qualidade pré-estabelecidas. Para colmatar a falta de trabalhos de investigação na área de sistemas de entrega de conteúdos multimédia em OTT, esta Tese foca-se na optimização destas soluções como um todo, partindo do caso de uso de migração de um serviço popular de Gravações Automáticas suportado em redes de Televisão sobre IP (IPTV) geridas, para um cenário de entrega em OTT. Um estudo global para aferir a importância das Gravações Automáticas revela a sua relevância no panorama de serviços multimédia e a sua adequação enquanto caso de uso de migração para cenários OTT. São obtidos registos de consumos de um serviço de produção de Gravações Automáticas, representando mais de 1 milhão de assinantes, para caracterizar e extrair informação de consumos numa escala e âmbito não contemplados ate a data na literatura. Esta caracterização e utilizada para construir modelos de previsão de carga, tirando partido de sistemas de machine learning, que permitem optimizações estáticas e dinâmicas dos sistemas de entrega de conteúdos em OTT através de previsões das necessidades de largura de banda e armazenamento, potenciando ganhos significativos em consumo energético e custos. Um novo mecanismo de caching, Most Popularly Used (MPU), demonstra um desempenho superior as soluções de referencia, quer em cenários de simulação quer experimentais. A necessidade de medição exacta da QoE em streaming adaptativo HTTP motiva a criaçao de um modelo capaz de endereçar aspectos específicos destas tecnologias adaptativas. Ao endereçar a cadeia completa de entrega através de uma arquitectura consciente dos seus conteúdos, esta Tese demonstra que são possíveis melhorias de desempenho muito significativas nas redes de entregas de conteúdos em OTT de próxima geração
