Design of Scalable On-Demand Video Streaming Systems Leveraging Video Viewing Patterns
The explosive growth in on-demand access of video across all forms of delivery (Internet, traditional cable, IPTV, wireless) has renewed the interest in scalable delivery methods. Approaches using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), Peer-to-Peer (P2P) approaches, and their combinations have been proposed as viable options to ease the load on servers and network links. However, there has been little focus on how to take advantage of user viewing patterns to understand their impact on existing mechanisms and to design new solutions that improve the streaming service quality.
In this dissertation, we leverage on the observation that users watch only a small portion of videos to understand the limits of existing designs and to optimize two scalable approaches -- the content placement and P2P Video-on-Demand (VoD) streaming. Then, we present our novel scalable system called Joint-Family which enables adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) in P2P VoD, supporting user viewing patterns.
We first provide evidence of such user viewing behavior from data collected from a nationally deployed VoD service. In contrast to using a simplistic popularity-based placement and traditionally proposed caching strategies (such as CDNs), we use a Mixed Integer Programming formulation to model the placement problem and employ an innovative approach that scales well. We have performed detailed simulations using actual traces of user viewing sessions (including stream control operations such as pause, fast-forward, and rewind). Our results show that the use of segment-based placement strategy yields substantial savings in both disk storage requirements at origin servers/VHOs as well as network bandwidth use. For example, compared to a simple caching scheme using full videos, our MIP-based placement using segments can achieve up to 71% reduction in peak link bandwidth usage.
Secondly, we note that the policies adopted in existing P2P VoD systems have not taken user viewing behavior -- that users abandon videos -- into account. We show that abandonment can result in increased interruptions and wasted resources. As a result, we reconsider the set of policies to use in the presence of abandonment. Our goal is to balance the conflicting needs of delivering videos without interruptions while minimizing wastage. We find that an Earliest-First chunk selection policy in conjunction with the Earliest-Deadline peer selection policy allows us to achieve high download rates. We take advantage of abandonment by converting peers to "partial seeds"; this increases capacity. We minimize wastage by using a playback lookahead window. We use analysis and simulation experiments using real-world traces to show the effectiveness of our approach.
Finally, we propose Joint-Family, a protocol that combines P2P and adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming for VoD. While P2P for VoD and ABR have been proposed previously, they have not been studied together because they attempt to tackle problems with seemingly orthogonal goals. We motivate our approach through analysis that overcomes a misconception resulting from prior analytical work, and show that the popularity of a P2P swarm and seed staying time has a significant bearing on the achievable per-receiver download rate. Specifically, our analysis shows that popularity affects swarm efficiency when seeds stay "long enough". We also show that ABR in a P2P setting helps viewers achieve higher playback rates and/or fewer interruptions.
We develop the Joint-Family protocol based on the observations from our analysis. Peers in Joint-Family simultaneously participate in multiple swarms to exchange chunks of different bitrates. We adopt chunk, bitrate, and peer selection policies that minimize occurrence of interruptions while delivering high quality video and improving the efficiency of the system. Using traces from a large-scale commercial VoD service, we compare Joint-Family with existing approaches for P2P VoD and show that viewers in Joint-Family enjoy higher playback rates with minimal interruption, irrespective of video popularity
Dataset on usage of a live & VoD P2P IPTV service
This paper presents a dataset of user statistics collected from a P2P multimedia service infrastructure that delivers both live and on-demand content in high quality to users via different platforms: PC/Mac, and set top boxes. The dataset covers a period of seven months starting from October 2011, exposing a total of over 94k system statistic reports from thousands of user devices at a fine granularity. Such rich data source is made available to fellow researchers to aid in developing better understanding of video delivery mechanisms, user behaviour, and programme popularity evolution

mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesHoje em dia a Internet é considerada um bem essencial devido ao facto de
haver uma constante necessidade de comunicar, mas também de aceder e
partilhar conteúdos. Com a crescente utilização da Internet, aliada ao aumento
da largura de banda fornecida pelos operadores de telecomunicações,
criaram-se assim excelentes condições para o aumento dos serviços multimédia
Over-The-Top (OTT), demonstrado pelo o sucesso apresentado
pelos os serviços Netflix e Youtube.
O serviço OTT engloba a entrega de vídeo e áudio através da Internet sem
um controlo direto dos operadores de telecomunicações, apresentando uma
proposta atractiva de baixo custo e lucrativa.
Embora a entrega OTT seja cativante, esta padece de algumas limitações.
Para que a proposta se mantenha em crescimento e com elevados padrões de
Qualidade-de-Experiência (QoE) para os consumidores, é necessário investir
na arquitetura da rede de distribuição de conteúdos, para que esta seja capaz
de se adaptar aos diversos tipos de conteúdo e obter um modelo otimizado
com um uso cauteloso dos recursos, tendo como objectivo fornecer serviços
OTT com uma boa qualidade para o utilizador, de uma forma eficiente e
escalável indo de encontro aos requisitos impostos pelas redes móveis atuais
e futuras.
Esta dissertação foca-se na distribuição de conteúdos em redes sem fios,
através de um modelo de cache distribuída entre os diferentes pontos de
acesso, aumentando assim o tamanho da cache e diminuindo o tráfego
necessário para os servidores ou caches da camada de agregação acima.
Assim, permite-se uma maior escalabilidade e aumento da largura de banda
disponível para os servidores de camada de agregação acima. Testou-se
o modelo de cache distribuída em três cenários: o consumidor está em
casa em que se considera que tem um acesso fixo, o consumidor tem um
comportamento móvel entre vários pontos de acesso na rua, e o consumidor
está dentro de um comboio em alta velocidade.
Testaram-se várias soluções como Redis2, Cachelot e Memcached para servir
de cache, bem como se avaliaram vários proxies para ir de encontro ás características necessárias. Mais ainda, na distribuição de conteúdos testaram-se
dois algoritmos, nomeadamente o Consistent e o Rendezvouz Hashing.
Ainda nesta dissertação utilizou-se uma proposta já existente baseada na
previsão de conteúdos (prefetching ), que consiste em colocar o conteúdo
nas caches antes de este ser requerido pelos consumidores.
No final, verificou-se que o modelo distribuído com a integração com prefecthing
melhorou a qualidade de experiência dos consumidores, bem como
reduziu a carga nos servidores de camada de agregação acima.Nowadays, the Internet is considered an essential good, due to the fact that
there is a need to communicate, but also to access and share information.
With the increasing use of the Internet, allied with the increased bandwidth
provided by telecommunication operators, it has created conditions for the
increase of Over-the-Top (OTT) Multimedia Services, demonstrated by the
huge success of Net
ix and Youtube.
The OTT service encompasses the delivery of video and audio through the
Internet without direct control of telecommunication operators, presenting
an attractive low-cost and pro table proposal.
Although the OTT delivery is captivating, it has some limitations. In order
to increase the number of clients and keep the high Quality of Experience
(QoE) standards, an enhanced architecture for content distribution network
is needed. Thus, the enhanced architecture needs to provide a good quality
for the user, in an e cient and scalable way, supporting the requirements
imposed by future mobile networks.
This dissertation aims to approach the content distribution in wireless networks,
through a distributed cache model among the several access points,
thus increasing the cache size and decreasing the load on the upstream
servers. The proposed architecture was tested in three di erent scenarios:
the consumer is at home and it is considered that it has a xed access, the
consumer is mobile between several access points in the street, the consumer
is in a high speed train.
Several solutions were evaluated, such as Redis2, Cachelot and Memcached
to serve as caches, along with the evaluation of several proxies server in order
to ful ll the required features. Also, it was tested two distributed algorithms,
namely the Consistent and Rendezvous Hashing.
Moreover, in this dissertation it was integrated a prefetching mechanism,
which consists of inserting the content in caches before being requested by
the consumers.
At the end, it was veri ed that the distributed model with prefetching improved
the consumers QoE as well as it reduced the load on the upstream
servers
40 Gbps Access for Metro networks: Implications in terms of Sustainability and Innovation from an LCA Perspective
In this work, the implications of new technologies, more specifically the new
optical FTTH technologies, are studied both from the functional and
non-functional perspectives. In particular, some direct impacts are listed in
the form of abandoning non-functional technologies, such as micro-registration,
which would be implicitly required for having a functioning operation before
arrival the new high-bandwidth access technologies. It is shown that such
abandonment of non-functional best practices, which are mainly at the
management level of ICT, immediately results in additional consumption and
environmental footprint, and also there is a chance that some other new
innovations might be 'missed.' Therefore, unconstrained deployment of these
access technologies is not aligned with a possible sustainable ICT picture,
except if they are regulated. An approach to pricing the best practices,
including both functional and non-functional technologies, is proposed in order
to develop a regulation and policy framework for a sustainable broadband

Computer Science and Technology Series : XV Argentine Congress of Computer Science. Selected papers
CACIC'09 was the fifteenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Engineering of the National University of Jujuy. The Congress included 9 Workshops with 130 accepted papers, 1 main Conference, 4 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. CACIC 2009 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 9 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of three chairs of different Universities.
The call for papers attracted a total of 267 submissions. An average of 2.7 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 720 review reports that involved about 300 different reviewers.

Dynamic and Dual Streaming Methods for H.264 Video and Parallel Performance Modeling
Traditional approaches to streaming H.264 video over a network typically rely on a single method of transport (i.e., reliable or unreliable) and/or use static values for parameters that can have a significant negative impact on the perceptual quality of the received video. This dissertation presents a dynamic method for wireless channel selection during video streaming, and explores the latency and QoE improvements yielded by the FDSP dual streaming method.
The increased workload that results from these dynamic methods can lead to a counterproductive impairment of streaming performance, and therefore requires efficient use of the multiple cores typically present in both sender and receiver (or server and client). This dissertation therefore presents a performance cost model which can be used to guide the parallelization of specific types of client or server-side streaming components -- specifically, programs containing non-DOALL loops that have inter-iteration data dependences which constrain their parallelism
Security Engineering of Patient-Centered Health Care Information Systems in Peer-to-Peer Environments: Systematic Review
Background: Patient-centered health care information systems (PHSs) enable patients to take control and become knowledgeable about their own health, preferably in a secure environment. Current and emerging PHSs use either a centralized database, peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, or distributed ledger technology for PHS deployment. The evolving COVID-19 decentralized Bluetooth-based tracing systems are examples of disease-centric P2P PHSs. Although using P2P technology for the provision of PHSs can be flexible, scalable, resilient to a single point of failure, and inexpensive for patients, the use of health information on P2P networks poses major security issues as users must manage information security largely by themselves. Objective: This study aims to identify the inherent security issues for PHS deployment in P2P networks and how they can be overcome. In addition, this study reviews different P2P architectures and proposes a suitable architecture for P2P PHS deployment. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) reporting guidelines. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. We searched the following databases: IEEE Digital Library, PubMed, Science Direct, ACM Digital Library, Scopus, and Semantic Scholar. The search was conducted on articles published between 2008 and 2020. The Common Vulnerability Scoring System was used as a guide for rating security issues. Results: Our findings are consolidated into 8 key security issues associated with PHS implementation and deployment on P2P networks and 7 factors promoting them. Moreover, we propose a suitable architecture for P2P PHSs and guidelines for the provision of PHSs while maintaining information security. Conclusions: Despite the clear advantages of P2P PHSs, the absence of centralized controls and inconsistent views of the network on some P2P systems have profound adverse impacts in terms of security. The security issues identified in this study need to be addressed to increase patients\u27 intention to use PHSs on P2P networks by making them safe to use

ubiquitous,
exible, and globally accessible services capable of low-cost
and unrestrained device targeting. In spite of its appeal, the underlying delivery
architecture must be carefully planned and optimized to maintain a high Qualityof-
Experience (QoE) and rational resource usage, especially when migrating from
services running on managed networks with established quality guarantees. To address
the lack of holistic research works on OTT multimedia delivery systems, this
Thesis focuses on an end-to-end optimization challenge, considering a migration
use-case of a popular Catch-up TV service from managed IP Television (IPTV)
networks to OTT. A global study is conducted on the importance of Catch-up
TV and its impact in today's society, demonstrating the growing popularity of
this time-shift service, its relevance in the multimedia landscape, and tness as
an OTT migration use-case. Catch-up TV consumption logs are obtained from
a Pay-TV operator's live production IPTV service containing over 1 million subscribers
to characterize demand and extract insights from service utilization at a
scale and scope not yet addressed in the literature. This characterization is used
to build demand forecasting models relying on machine learning techniques to enable
static and dynamic optimization of OTT multimedia delivery solutions, which
are able to produce accurate bandwidth and storage requirements' forecasts, and
may be used to achieve considerable power and cost savings whilst maintaining a
high QoE. A novel caching algorithm, Most Popularly Used (MPU), is proposed,
implemented, and shown to outperform established caching algorithms in both
simulation and experimental scenarios. The need for accurate QoE measurements
in OTT scenarios supporting HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) motivates the creation
of a new QoE model capable of taking into account the impact of key HAS
aspects. By addressing the complete content delivery pipeline in the envisioned
content-aware OTT Content Delivery Network (CDN), this Thesis demonstrates
that signi cant improvements are possible in next-generation multimedia delivery
solutions.A entrega de conteúdos multimédia em Over-The-Top (OTT) e uma proposta
atractiva para fornecer um serviço flexível e globalmente acessível, capaz de alcançar qualquer dispositivo, com uma promessa de baixos custos. Apesar das suas vantagens, e necessario um planeamento arquitectural detalhado e optimizado para manter níveis elevados de Qualidade de Experiência (QoE), em particular aquando da migração dos serviços suportados em redes geridas com garantias de qualidade pré-estabelecidas. Para colmatar a falta de trabalhos de investigação na área de sistemas de entrega de conteúdos multimédia em OTT, esta Tese foca-se na optimização destas soluções como um todo, partindo do caso de uso de migração de um serviço popular de Gravações Automáticas suportado em redes de Televisão sobre IP (IPTV) geridas, para um cenário de entrega em OTT. Um estudo global para aferir a importância das Gravações Automáticas revela a sua relevância no panorama de serviços multimédia e a sua adequação enquanto caso de uso de
migração para cenários OTT. São obtidos registos de consumos de um serviço
de produção de Gravações Automáticas, representando mais de 1 milhão de assinantes,
para caracterizar e extrair informação de consumos numa escala e âmbito
não contemplados ate a data na literatura. Esta caracterização e utilizada para
construir modelos de previsão de carga, tirando partido de sistemas de machine
learning, que permitem optimizações estáticas e dinâmicas dos sistemas de entrega
de conteúdos em OTT através de previsões das necessidades de largura de banda e
armazenamento, potenciando ganhos significativos em consumo energético e custos.
Um novo mecanismo de caching, Most Popularly Used (MPU), demonstra um
desempenho superior as soluções de referencia, quer em cenários de simulação quer
experimentais. A necessidade de medição exacta da QoE em streaming adaptativo
HTTP motiva a criaçao de um modelo capaz de endereçar aspectos específicos
destas tecnologias adaptativas. Ao endereçar a cadeia completa de entrega através
de uma arquitectura consciente dos seus conteúdos, esta Tese demonstra que são
possíveis melhorias de desempenho muito significativas nas redes de entregas de
conteúdos em OTT de próxima geração
