Green lettuce is a vegetable that is widely consumed in Indonesia. These vegetables come from conventional and hydroponic farming. This study aims to compare the antioxidant content of these two types of vegetables. This vegetable is extracted by the infundation method. The extract obtained was determined for its antioxidant content by the MPM method. This method was validated by using parameter LoD, LoQ, linearity, precision and accuracy. The results showed that this method was valid for determining the total antioxidant content in conventional and hydroponic green lettuce samples. The total antioxidant content in conventional and hydroponic green lettuce samples was 2.68 ± 0.65 mg aa/g FW and 1.67 ± 0.40 mg AA/g FW, respectively. T test stated that the antioxidant content of the two samples was significantly different

    Get PDF
In the present work the total content of phenolic antioxidants in juice of some fruit and vegetables, in wines, water extracts of tea and herb were measured by amperometry. Efficiency of the method allowed determining the total antioxidant content in their binary and multimixes, including processes of frosting-defrosting and juice diluting as well. The deviation of experimentally received values of the total antioxidant content in some drink mixes from the values calculated proceeding from the additivity principle of the antioxidant content in separate drinks has been revealed

Blackberries (Rubus caesius), elderberries (Sambucus nigra L), highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L) and black currants (Ribes nigrum) were selected for research on their content of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins and comparing their content in these berries. Samples were also assayed for ascorbic acid and soluble solid content. The unifying mark of these fruits is purple-black color, which indicates high content of anthocyanins. Analyses of these fruits showed that they contain high biological activity components that justify the uses of these fruits. The research was done at the Department of Chemistry, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, year 2019. Berry samples were bought at the supermarket (highbush blueberries) or collected from garden in Jelgava, Latvia (blackberries, elderberries and black currants). All berries were at full maturity. The content of ascorbic acid, total phenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids as well as soluble solids was determined. Descending order of ascorbic acid content in berries is: black currants > blackberries > elderberries > highbush blueberries. Elderberries had the highest content of anthocyanins, total phenols and flavonoids on average 161.5, 537.9 and 112.6 mg 100 g -1 FW, respectively. The content of soluble solids changes from 5.83 Brix (elderberries) to 13.67 Brix (black currants)

The properties and applications of Moringa oleifera are so vast that it is called the "miracle tree". The objective of this work is to study the seasonal variations in the leaf antioxidant content and the scavenging activity on DPPH radicals in concordance with its growth on M. oleifera plants of two seed origin, Commercial (C, seeds that were obtained from a market) and Bolivia (B, seeds that were obtained from a commercial forest of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia); the experiment was conducted at Buenos Aires, Argentina. Significant differences were found on leaf growth, antioxidant content and DPPH activity along the growing season. The lower leaf dry weight as percentage of fresh weight, higher specific leaf area, higher relative growth rate and lower phenol content on B leaves than C leaves could indicate that B plants are geared for a higher productivity rate of resource acquisition than C plants. Specific leaf area, leaf dry weight as percentage of fresh weight, phenol content and activity of DPPH radicals on leaf extracts were significantly correlated, which could be used on productivity estimation and nutraceutical valuation. The phenol content and activity of DPPH radicals of leaf extracts of B and C origins indicate that the leaves of the plants growing in the described conditions are of noteworthy value. These are the first antecedents for M. oleifera growing at Buenos Aires, Argentina, allowing to preliminary consider this area as one of the southernmost zone.Fil: Arena, Miriam Elisabet. Comparison of antioxidant properties of pomelo [Citrus Grandis (L) Osbeck] varieties

    Get PDF
This study aimed to compare the antioxidant content and antioxidant capacity of pulp and peel of two varieties of pomelo fruit (Tambun White and Tambun Pink). Antioxidants including total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and ascorbic acid content were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent assay, aluminium chloride colorimetric assay and AOAC method, respectively. Antioxidant capacity of pomelo pulp and peel was measured using ferric reducing antioxidant potential and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assays. The peels of both pomelo fruits had higher antioxidant content and capacity than their pulps. Moreover, the white variety of pomelo had higher antioxidant content and capacity compared to the pink counterpart. Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity of the samples was positively high correlated with total phenolic content (r = 0.978) and total flavonoid content (r =0.959), except for ascorbic acid. Therefore, pomelo peel from white variety possessed higher antioxidant properties and it is potentially rich sources of natural antioxidants

Rat liver antioxidant response to iron and copper overloads

The rat liver antioxidant response to Fe and Cu overloads (0–60 mg/kg) was studied. Dose- and time-responses were determined and summarized by t1/2 and C50, the time and the liver metal content for half maximal oxidative responses. Liver GSH (reduced glutathione) and GSSG (glutathione disulfide) were determined. The GSH content and the GSH/GSSG ratio markedly decreased after Fe (58–66%) and Cu (79–81%) loads, with t1/2 of 4.0 and 2.0 h. The C50 were in a similar range for all the indicators (110–124 μg Fe/g and 40–50 μg Cu/g) and suggest a unique free-radical mediated process. Hydrophilic antioxidants markedly decreased after Fe and Cu (60–75%; t1/2: 4.5 and 4.0 h). Lipophilic antioxidants were also decreased (30–92%; t1/2: 7.0 and 5.5 h) after Fe and Cu. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities (Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD) and protein expression were adaptively increased after metal overloads (Cu,Zn-SOD: t1/2: 8–8.5 h and Mn-SOD: t1/2: 8.5–8.0 h). Catalase activity was increased after Fe (65%; t1/2: 8.5 h) and decreased after Cu (26%; t1/2: 8.0 h), whereas catalase expression was increased after Fe and decreased after Cu overloads. Glutathione peroxidase activity decreased after metal loads by 22–39% with a t1/2 of 4.5 h and with unchanged protein expression. GSH is the main and fastest responder antioxidant in Fe and Cu overloads. The results indicate that thiol (SH) content and antioxidant enzyme activities are central to the antioxidant defense in the oxidative stress and damage after Fe and Cu overloads.Fil: Musacco Sebio, Rosario Natalia. The Antioxidant Content of Wong Lo Kat Tea

    Get PDF
Wong Lo Kat (or Wanglaoji in Mandarin) is a popular soft drink containing herbal tea that is often used as a Chinese folk remedy for mild ailments. The herbs included in the drink are the following: Chinese Mesona, White Frangipani, Microcos, Chrysanthemum, Japanese Honeysuckle, Heal All, and Chinese Licorice. While there is research on the individual plants, there is limited information on the combined mixture of the herbs included in the Wong Lo Kat drink, particularly in published English literature. Antioxidant content for the individual herbs and a combined mixture of equal parts of each herb was tested using the TEAC test. To prepare the combined herb solution, each herb’s phenolics were sonicated, centrifuged, and concentrated using a rotary evaporator, then combined in equal parts using 1 mL each. The antioxidant activities were found to be the following: Chinese Mesona was 1.5586 ± 0.1217; White Frangipani was 1.4277 ± 0.2351; Microcos was 1.2813 ± 0.1398; Chrysanthemum was 1.2183 ± 0.1961; Japanese Honeysuckle was 1.4751 ± 0.1702; Heal All was 1.4905 ± 0.1702; Chinese Licorice was 1.1554 ± 0.1483; and combined was 1.2463 ± 0.1892. All values were reported in mmol Trolox equivalency/g sample. ANOVA test was used with Tukey\u27s test to determine that the means of the herbs and combined mixture were not statistically significant from each other. Comparing the Wong Lo Kat mixture with teas available in the market, the antioxidant activity is comparable to several high-quality iterations of green tea and other teas in the market

Functional compounds of einkorn and emmer genotypes

    Get PDF
Three einkorn and two emmer genotypes were analysed for concentration of microelements (Fe, Zn and Se) and lipid soluble antioxidants (α-tocopherol, α-tocotrienol and β-carotene). A diversity was observed in micronutrient content, but most of the genotypes have significantly higher trace element and antioxidant contents than the control wheat variety. The emmer genotypes contain lower Fe and β-carotene concentration than einkorn genotypes. The einkorn genotypes have significant higher antioxidant content than the wheat control. On average einkorn has more than three times more β-carotene than the wheat variety. Our results are useful for species/variety choice in functional food production not only for organic but also for conventional farmers, who have/want to operate under low input conditions, especially in Central Europe
