    The idea of cancelling the acoustic noise by generating an anti-noise signal is very fascinating, and was first proposed by P. Lueg in 1936. In feedforward active noise control (ANC) systems, the anti-noise signal is generated with the help of reference and error microphones, an adaptive filtered-x-LMS (FxLMS) algorithm based ANC filter, and an electro-acoustic path named as the secondary path. For stable operation of ANC systems, the FxLMS algorithm needs an estimate of the secondary path. The anti-noise signal generated by the loudspeaker (part of secondary path) causes interference with the reference microphone signal. This interference is due to the presence of electro-acoustic path, named as feedback path, between the loudspeaker and the reference microphone. It is required to neutralize the effect of this feedback path, and hence an estimate of the feedback path is required. For online modeling of the secondary and feedback paths, an additional auxiliary noise is injected. This auxiliary noise contributes to the residual error, and thus degrades the noise-reduction-performance (NRP) of ANC system. In order to improve the NRP, a gain scheduling strategy is used to vary the variance of the injected auxiliary noise. The purpose of the gain scheduling is that when the model estimates of the secondary and the feedback paths are far from the actual unknown paths, auxiliary noise with large variance is injected. Once the model estimates are closer to the actual unknown paths, the variance of auxiliary noise is reduced to a small value. In this way, on one hand the gain scheduling can help us to achieve the required model estimates of secondary and feedback paths, and on the other hand to improve the NRP at the steady-state. In this thesis, we discuss the two most important issues, i.e., 1) online secondary path modeling (OSPM), and 2) online feedback path modeling and neutralization (FBPMN) with gain scheduling. In chapter 1, the basic underlying physical principle and configurations of active noise control (ANC) systems are explained. The application of the basic building block of an ANC system i.e. An adaptive filter, in different system identification scenarios is discussed. The most popular adaptive algorithm for ANC system, i.e., FxLMS algorithm is derived for the general secondary path. A brief overview is given for the two fundamental issues in ANC systems, i.e., 1) OSPM and 2) online FBPMN. The use of optimal excitation signal, i.e., Perfect sweep signals for system identification is described. In chapter 2, the existing methods for OSPM without gain scheduling, where the auxiliary noise with fixed variance is used in all operating conditions, are discussed. In this chapter a simplified structure for OSPM with the modified FxLMS (MFxLMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed. The advantage of the simplified structure is that it reduces the computational complexity of the MFxLMS algorithm based OSPM without having any compromise on the performance of ANC system. In chapter 3, the existing methods for OSPM with gain scheduling are discussed. The drawbacks with the existing gain scheduling strategies are highlighted, and some new gain scheduling strategies are proposed to improve the modeling accuracy of SPM filter and the NRP of an ANC system. In existing methods, the gain is varied based on the power of residual error signal which carries information only about the convergence status of ANC system. In the Proposed methods the gain is varied based on the power of error signal of SPM filter. This is more desirable way of controlling the gain because the power of error signal of SPM filter carries information about the convergence status of both the ANC system and the SPM filter. The performance comparison is carried out through the simulation results. In chapter 4, the second most important issue associated with the feedforward configuration of ANC system, i.e., the issue of online FBPMN is deal with. In the first part, the existing methods for online FBPMN without gain scheduling are discussed. A new structure is proposed for online FBPMN without gain scheduling. The performance of the existing methods is compare with the proposed method through the simulation results. In the new structure the good features from the existing structures are combined together. The predictor is used in the new structure to remove the predictable interference term from the error signal of adaptive FBPMN filter. In addition to this, the action of FBPM filter and the FBPN filter is combined into a single FBPMN filter. The advantage of the new structure over the existing structures is that it can better neutralize the effect of feedback coupling on the input signal of ANC filter, thus improves the convergence of ANC system. In the second part, a gain scheduling strategy is proposed to improve the NRP of ANC system. In addition to this, a self-tuned ANP scheduling strategy with matching step-size for FBPMN filter is also proposed that requires no tuning parameters and further improves the NRP of ANC systems.     Adaptive Algorithms Design for Active Noise Control Systems with Disturbance at Reference and Error Microphones

    Active noise control (ANC) is a popular choice for mitigating the acoustic noise in the surrounding environment resulting from industrial and medical equipment, appliances, and consumer electronics. ANC cancels the low frequency acoustic noise by generating a cancelling sound from speakers. The speakers are triggered by noise control filters and produce sound waves with the same amplitude and inverted phase to the original sound. Noise control filters are updated by adaptive algorithms. Successful applications of this technology are available in headsets, earplugs, propeller aircraft, cars and mobile phones. Since multiple applications are running simultaneously, efficiency of the adaptive control algorithms in terms of implementation, computations and performance is critical to the performance of the ANC systems.     Active cancellation of electromagnetic emissions of power electronic systems by injecting synthesized and synchronized signals

    In this thesis, a new method is developed for the active cancellation of predictable EMI by injecting synthesized and synchronized signals. At first, a generic description is derived for the active cancellation of conducted EMI of arbitrary single- and multi-port electronic systems. From the mathematical description, important requirements for the overall system and the cancellation signals are found. Analog active EMI filters as an established method for active EMI cancellation are discussed. These use analog circuitry to generate the cancellation signals from a measured quantity by a feedback or feedforward approach. It is shown that the performance of these structures is systematically limited by the amplifiers' gain-bandwidth products (that can also be interpreted as time constants) and the finite propagation speed of electrical signals. Digital active EMI filters use digital signal processing hardware instead of analog amplifiers in the feedback or feedforward structures. By doing so, restricting gain-bandwidth products are avoided. However, the signal processing causes significant delay times that limit the performance of these systems. Active cancellation methods and systems in the fields of power quality and acoustics are reviewed for their applicability to active EMI cancellation. The most promising approaches are applicable to periodic disturbances. These synthesize artificial cancellation signals and inject them in synchronicity with the disturbances. For quasi-periodic EMI, these systems can use the knowledge of the past for the future. Therefore, time constants and delay times can be compensated by shaping the cancellation signal and injecting it earlier than the EMI occurs. By doing so, the signal generation is no limiting factor for the achievable EMI reduction anymore. The remaining limitations are the capabilities of the digital hardware. These methods are further abstracted to a new active cancellation technique that uses synthesized and synchronized cancellation signals. This method requires the EMI to be predictable so that the cancellation signals can be synthesized and injected at the right time. The predictability is given for quasi-periodic signals (since the past signals allow for an extrapolation into the future), but may also be given for non-periodic signals if there is sufficient knowledge on the upcoming events. Various possibilities for implementation are discussed. The method is realized by an FPGA system with an ADC and a DAC, or a laboratory setup consisting of arbitrary waveform generators, an oscilloscope and a PC. The FPGA system is investigated and applied to one port of a DC-to-DC converter and a PFC. The laboratory setup is first applied to one and afterward to multiple ports of a DC-to-DC converter. After a system identification, the components are purposefully designed to fulfill specific EMI requirements. Measurement results demonstrate the high potential of the method with promising EMI reductions of up to 64 dB for 1 MHz and up to 47 dB for frequencies of up to 30 MHz

    Efficient Algorithms for Immersive Audio Rendering Enhancement

    Il rendering audio immersivo è il processo di creazione di un’esperienza sonora coinvolgente e realistica nello spazio 3D. Nei sistemi audio immersivi, le funzioni di trasferimento relative alla testa (head-related transfer functions, HRTFs) vengono utilizzate per la sintesi binaurale in cuffia poiché esprimono il modo in cui gli esseri umani localizzano una sorgente sonora. Possono essere introdotti algoritmi di interpolazione delle HRTF per ridurre il numero di punti di misura e per creare un movimento del suono affidabile. La riproduzione binaurale può essere eseguita anche dagli altoparlanti. Tuttavia, il coinvolgimento di due o più gli altoparlanti causa il problema del crosstalk. In questo caso, algoritmi di cancellazione del crosstalk (CTC) sono necessari per eliminare i segnali di interferenza indesiderati. In questa tesi, partendo da un'analisi comparativa di metodi di misura delle HRTF, viene proposto un sistema di rendering binaurale basato sull'interpolazione delle HRTF per applicazioni in tempo reale. Il metodo proposto mostra buone prestazioni rispetto a una tecnica di riferimento. L'algoritmo di interpolazione è anche applicato al rendering audio immersivo tramite altoparlanti, aggiungendo un algoritmo di cancellazione del crosstalk fisso, che considera l'ascoltatore in una posizione fissa. Inoltre, un sistema di cancellazione crosstalk adattivo, che include il tracciamento della testa dell'ascoltatore, è analizzato e implementato in tempo reale. Il CTC adattivo implementa una struttura in sottobande e risultati sperimentali dimostrano che un maggiore numero di bande migliora le prestazioni in termini di errore totale e tasso di convergenza. Il sistema di riproduzione e le caratteristiche dell'ambiente di ascolto possono influenzare le prestazioni a causa della loro risposta in frequenza non ideale. L'equalizzazione viene utilizzata per livellare le varie parti dello spettro di frequenze che compongono un segnale audio al fine di ottenere le caratteristiche sonore desiderate. L'equalizzazione può essere manuale, come nel caso dell'equalizzazione grafica, dove il guadagno di ogni banda di frequenza può essere modificato dall'utente, o automatica, la curva di equalizzazione è calcolata automaticamente dopo la misurazione della risposta impulsiva della stanza. L'equalizzazione della risposta ambientale può essere applicata anche ai sistemi multicanale, che utilizzano due o più altoparlanti e la zona di equalizzazione può essere ampliata misurando le risposte impulsive in diversi punti della zona di ascolto. In questa tesi, GEQ efficienti e un sistema adattativo di equalizzazione d'ambiente. In particolare, sono proposti e approfonditi tre equalizzatori grafici a basso costo computazionale e a fase lineare e quasi lineare. Gli esperimenti confermano l'efficacia degli equalizzatori proposti in termini di accuratezza, complessità computazionale e latenza. Successivamente, una struttura adattativa in sottobande è introdotta per lo sviluppo di un sistema di equalizzazione d'ambiente multicanale. I risultati sperimentali verificano l'efficienza dell'approccio in sottobande rispetto al caso a banda singola. Infine, viene presentata una rete crossover a fase lineare per sistemi multicanale, mostrando ottimi risultati in termini di risposta in ampiezza, bande di transizione, risposta polare e risposta in fase. I sistemi di controllo attivo del rumore (ANC) possono essere progettati per ridurre gli effetti dell'inquinamento acustico e possono essere utilizzati contemporaneamente a un sistema audio immersivo. L'ANC funziona creando un'onda sonora in opposizione di fase rispetto all'onda sonora in arrivo. Il livello sonoro complessivo viene così ridotto grazie all'interferenza distruttiva. Infine, questa tesi presenta un sistema ANC utilizzato per la riduzione del rumore. L’approccio proposto implementa una stima online del percorso secondario e si basa su filtri adattativi in sottobande applicati alla stima del percorso primario che mirano a migliorare le prestazioni dell’intero sistema. La struttura proposta garantisce un tasso di convergenza migliore rispetto all'algoritmo di riferimento.Immersive audio rendering is the process of creating an engaging and realistic sound experience in 3D space. In immersive audio systems, the head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are used for binaural synthesis over headphones since they express how humans localize a sound source. HRTF interpolation algorithms can be introduced for reducing the number of measurement points and creating a reliable sound movement. Binaural reproduction can be also performed by loudspeakers. However, the involvement of two or more loudspeakers causes the problem of crosstalk. In this case, crosstalk cancellation (CTC) algorithms are needed to delete unwanted interference signals. In this thesis, starting from a comparative analysis of HRTF measurement techniques, a binaural rendering system based on HRTF interpolation is proposed and evaluated for real-time applications. The proposed method shows good performance in comparison with a reference technique. The interpolation algorithm is also applied for immersive audio rendering over loudspeakers, by adding a fixed crosstalk cancellation algorithm, which assumes that the listener is in a fixed position. In addition, an adaptive crosstalk cancellation system, which includes the tracking of the listener's head, is analyzed and a real-time implementation is presented. The adaptive CTC implements a subband structure and experimental results prove that a higher number of bands improves the performance in terms of total error and convergence rate. The reproduction system and the characteristics of the listening room may affect the performance due to their non-ideal frequency response. Audio equalization is used to adjust the balance of different audio frequencies in order to achieve desired sound characteristics. The equalization can be manual, such as in the case of graphic equalization, where the gain of each frequency band can be modified by the user, or automatic, where the equalization curve is automatically calculated after the room impulse response measurement. The room response equalization can be also applied to multichannel systems, which employ two or more loudspeakers, and the equalization zone can be enlarged by measuring the impulse responses in different points of the listening zone. In this thesis, efficient graphic equalizers (GEQs), and an adaptive room response equalization system are presented. In particular, three low-complexity linear- and quasi-linear-phase graphic equalizers are proposed and deeply examined. Experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed GEQs in terms of accuracy, computational complexity, and latency. Successively, a subband adaptive structure is introduced for the development of a multichannel and multiple positions room response equalizer. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the subband approach in comparison with the single-band case. Finally, a linear-phase crossover network is presented for multichannel systems, showing great results in terms of magnitude flatness, cutoff rates, polar diagram, and phase response. Active noise control (ANC) systems can be designed to reduce the effects of noise pollution and can be used simultaneously with an immersive audio system. The ANC works by creating a sound wave that has an opposite phase with respect to the sound wave of the unwanted noise. The additional sound wave creates destructive interference, which reduces the overall sound level. Finally, this thesis presents an ANC system used for noise reduction. The proposed approach implements an online secondary path estimation and is based on cross-update adaptive filters applied to the primary path estimation that aim at improving the performance of the whole system. The proposed structure allows for a better convergence rate in comparison with a reference algorithm

    Active Control of Pressure Pulsation in a Switched Inertance Hydraulic System

    The nature of digital hydraulic systems may cause pressure pulsation problems. For example, switched inertance hydraulic systems (SIHS), which are applied to adjust or control flow and pressure by a means that does not rely on dissipation of power, have noise problems due to the pulsed nature of the flow. An effective method to reduce the pulsation is important to improve system performance and increase efficiency. Although passive systems to reduce the noise have been shown to be effective in many situations, their attenuation frequency range is limited and they may be bulky. Furthermore, attenuation devices based on expansion chambers, accumulators or hoses are likely to be unsuitable for SIHS as they add compliance to the system and would impair the dynamic response. This thesis is concerned with issues relating to the development of an active noise canceller for attenuating the pressure pulsation which is caused primarily by pulsed flow from high-speed valves in SIHS. Active control methods are widely and successfully applied in the area of structureborne noise (SBN) and air-borne noise (ABN) cancellation. The idea is using the intentional superposition of waves to create a destructive interference pattern such that a reduction of the unwanted noise occurs. However, applications for fluid-borne noise (FBN) attenuation based on the ‘Active noise control (ANC) principle’ are rare due to the restriction of the hardware and experimental apparatus in previous researches. In this thesis, an adaptive controller has been developed for active control of pressure pulsation in hydraulic system. The principle of the adaptive LMS filter and details of the controller design are described and the implementation was carried out through simulation. The designed controller was applied on a vibration test rig initially prior to the hydraulic testing in order to investigate its advantages and limitations in practice. Extensive testing on a switched inertance hydraulic rig proved that the controller, which used a piezoelectric valve with fast response and good bandwidth, is effective and that it has several advantages over previous methods, being effective for low frequency cancellation, with a quick response, and is robust and versatile. A novel method for the accurate measurement of unsteady flowrate in a pipe was proposed. This was applied and validated on a pipe, and was shown to give good results. This method solves the difficulty for measuring the unsteady flowrate currently by using easy-measured signals, such as pressures.     dissertationThe dissertation is concerned with the development and analysis of adaptive algorithms for the rejection of unknown periodic disturbances acting on an unknown system. The rejection of periodic disturbances is a problem frequently encountered in control engineering, and in active noise and vibration control in particular. A new adaptive algorithm is presented for situations where the plant is unknown and may be time-varying. Known as the adaptive harmonic steady-state or ADHSS algorithm, the approach consists in obtaining on-line estimates of the plant frequency response and of the disturbance parameters. The estimates are used to continuously update control parameters and cancel or minimize the effect of the disturbance. The dynamic behavior of the algorithm is analyzed using averaging theory. Averaging theory allows the nonlinear time-varying closed-loop system to be approximated by a nonlinear time-invariant system. Extensions of the algorithm to systems with multiple inputs/outputs and disturbances consisting of multiple frequency components are provided. After considering the rejection of sinusoidal disturbances of known frequency, the rejection of disturbances of unknown frequency acting on an unknown and time-varying plant is considered. This involves the addition of frequency estimation to the ADHSS algorithm. It is shown that when magnitude phase-locked loop (MPLL) frequency estimation is integrated with the ADHSS algorithm, the two components work together in such a way that the control input does not prevent frequency tracking by the frequency estimator and so that the order of the ADHSS can be reduced. While MPLL frequency estimation can be combined favorably with ADHSS disturbance rejection, stability is limited due to the local convergence properties of the MPLL. Thus, a new frequency estimation algorithm with semiglobal stability properties is introduced. Based on the theory of asynchronous electric machines, the induction motor frequency estimator, or IMFE, is shown to be appropriate for disturbance cancellation and, with modification, is shown to increase stability of the combined ADHSS/MPLL algorithm. Extensive active noise control experiments demonstrate the performance of the algorithms presented in the dissertation when disturbance and plant parameters are changing

    Vocal fold vibratory and acoustic features in fatigued Karaoke singers

    Session 3aMU - Musical Acoustics and Speech Communication: Singing Voice in Asian CulturesKaraoke is a popular singing entertainment particularly in Asia and is gaining more popularity in the rest of world. In Karaoke, an amateur singer sings with the background music and video (usually guided by the lyric captions on the video screen) played by Karaoke machine, using a microphone and an amplification system. As the Karaoke singers usually have no formal training, they may be more vulnerable to vocal fatigue as they may overuse and/or misuse their voices in the intensive and extensive singing activities. It is unclear whether vocal fatigue is accompanied by any vibration pattern or physiological changes of vocal folds. In this study, 20 participants aged from 18 to 23 years with normal voice were recruited to participate in an prolonged singing task, which induced vocal fatigue. High speed laryngscopic imaging and acoustic signals were recorded before and after the singing task. Images of /i/ phonation were quantitatively analyzed using the High Speed Video Processing (HSVP) program (Yiu, et al. 2010). It was found that the glottis became relatively narrower following fatigue, while the acoustic signals were not sensitive to measure change following fatigue. © 2012 Acoustical Society of Americapublished_or_final_versio
