Variations in Alaska tidewater glacier frontal ablation, 1985â2013
Our incomplete knowledge of the proportion of mass loss due to frontal ablation (the sum of ice loss through calving and submarine melt) from tidewater glaciers outside of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets has been cited as a major hindrance to accurate predictions of global sea level rise. We present a 28 year record (1985â2013) of frontal ablation for 27 Alaska tidewater glaciers (representing 96% of the total tidewater glacier area in the region), calculated from satellite-derived ice velocities and modeled estimates of glacier ice thickness. We account for cross-sectional ice thickness variation, long-term thickness changes, mass lost between an upstream fluxgate and the terminus, and mass change due to changes in terminus position. The total mean rate of frontal ablation for these 27 glaciers over the period 1985â2013 is 15.11 ± 3.63Gtaâ»Âč. Two glaciers, Hubbard and Columbia, account for approximately 50% of these losses. The regional total ablation has decreased at a rate of 0.14Gtaâ»Âč over this time period, likely due to the slowing and thinning of many of the glaciers in the study area. Frontal ablation constitutes only âŒ4% of the total annual regional ablation, but roughly 20% of net mass loss. Comparing several commonly used approximations in the calculation of frontal ablation, we find that neglecting cross-sectional thickness variations severely underestimates frontal ablation
Strain-Dependence of Surface Diffusion: Ag on Ag(111) and Pt(111)
Using density-functional theory with the local-density approximation and the
generalized gradient approximation we compute the energy barriers for surface
diffusion for Ag on Pt(111), Ag on one monolayer of Ag on Pt(111), and Ag on
Ag(111). The diffusion barrier for Ag on Ag(111) is found to increase linearly
with increasing lattice constant. We also discuss the reconstruction that has
been found experimentally when two Ag layers are deposited on Pt(111). Our
calculations explain why this strain driven reconstruction occurs only after
two Ag layers have been deposited.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Phys. Rev. B 55 (1997), in pres
A nesting conformation of the 5âČ-bromo-1âČ,3âČ-xylyl-18-crown-5·tert-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate complex; the correlation of the structures of crown ether complexes in the solid state and in solution
Single-crystal X-ray analysis of the 5âČ-bromo-1âČ,3âČ-xylyl-18-crown-5· tert-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate complex shows that the complex is of the ânestingâ type in which the cation and the aryl group are on the same face of the macroring and that the macroring has a (ag+a) (agâa) (ag+a) (agâa)(ag+a) (agâa) conformation

On Modulo AG-groupoids
A groupoid G is called an AG-groupoid if it satisfies the left invertive law:
(ab)c = (cb)a. An AG-group G, is an AG-groupoid with left identity e \in G
(that is, ea = a for all a \in G) and for all a \in G there exists a' \in G
such that a.a' = a'.a = e. In this article we introduce the concept of
AG-groupoids (mod n) and AG-group (mod n) using Vasantha's constructions [1].
This enables us to prove that AG-groupoids (mod n) and AG-groups (mod n) exist
for every integer n \geq 3. We also give some nice characterizations of some
classes of AG-groupoids in terms of AG-groupoids (mod n).Comment: 10 page
Shuffle on array languages generated by array grammars
Motivated by the studies done by G. Siromoney et al. (1973) and Alexan-
dru Mateescu et al. (1998) we examine the language theoretic results related to shuf- fle on trajectories by making use of Siromoney array grammars such as (R : R)AG, (R : C F )AG, (C F : R)AG, (C F : C F )AG, (C S : R)AG, (C S : C S)AG and (C F : C S)AG which are more powerful than the Siromoney matrix grammars (1972)
and are used to make digital pictures
