Work System Modeling Method with Different Levels of Specificity and Rigor for Different Stakeholder Purposes
This paper proposes a modeling method (the work system modeling method - WSMM) that addresses key issues related to enterprise and process modeling. Those issues lead to modeling method requirements that call for relaxing common assumptions about the nature of modeling methods and related modeling languages and metamodels. A summary of work system theory (WST)and the work system method (WSM) provides background for understanding WSMM. A design space for modeling positions most applications of WSM in relation to seven purposes of modeling that call for successively more formal approaches. WSMM is presented in relation to the seven purposes, thereby extending WSM in new directions. A final section summarizes how WSMM addresses the issues and requirements from the introduction, explains how coherence is maintained within WSMM, and identifies areas for future research
A Development Method for the Conceptual Design of Multi-View Modeling Tools with an Emphasis on Consistency Requirements
The main objective of this thesis is to bridge the gap between modeling method experts on the one side and tool developers on the other. More precisely, the focus is on the specification of requirements for multi-view modeling tools. In this regard, the thesis introduces a methodological approach that supports the specification of conceptual designs for multi-view modeling tools in a stepwise manner: the MuVieMoT approach. MuVieMoT utilizes generic multi-view modeling concepts and the model-driven engineering paradigm to establish an overarching specification of multi-view modeling tools with an emphasis on consistency requirements. The approach builds on and extends the theoretical foundation of metamodeling and multi-view modeling: generic multi-view modeling concepts, integrated multi-view modeling approaches, and possibilities for formalized modeling method specifications. Applicability and utility of MuVieMoT are evaluated using an illustrative scenario, therefore specifying a conceptual design for a multi-view modeling tool for the Semantic Object Model enterprise modeling method. The thesis moreover introduces the MuVieMoT modeling environment, enabling the efficient application of the approach as well as the model-driven development of initial multi-view modeling tools based on the conceptual models created with MuVieMoT. Consequently, the approach fosters an intersubjective and unambiguous understanding of the tool requirements between method experts and tool developers
Model-based Digital Twins of Medicine Dispensers for Healthcare IoT Applications
Healthcare applications with the Internet of Things (IoT) are often
safety-critical, thus, require extensive testing. Such applications are often
connected to smart medical devices from various vendors. System-level testing
of such applications requires test infrastructures physically integrating
medical devices, which is time and monetary-wise expensive. Moreover,
applications continuously evolve, e.g., introducing new devices and users and
updating software. Nevertheless, a test infrastructure enabling testing with a
few devices is insufficient for testing healthcare IoT systems, hence
compromising their dependability. In this paper, we propose a model-based
approach for the creation and operation of digital twins (DTs) of medicine
dispensers as a replacement for physical devices to support the automated
testing of IoT applications at scale. We evaluate our approach with an
industrial IoT system with medicine dispensers in the context of Oslo City and
its industrial partners, providing healthcare services to its residents. We
study the fidelity of DTs in terms of their functional similarities with their
physical counterparts: medicine dispensers. Results show that the DTs behave
more than 92% similar to the physical medicine dispensers, providing a faithful
replacement for the dispenser
Towards an Open Repository for Design Science Research: A Meta-Model and its Instantiation for the Representation of Design Science Research Processes
Design Science Research (DSR) is a well-established paradigm in the Information Systems field generating knowledge on the design of innovative solutions to real-world problems. The maturity of DSR has increased due to many methodological contributions, including conceptualization of the design process, templates on how to plan and document, as well as guidelines on how to conduct DSR projects. At the same time, given the dynamic nature of design in the digital era, DSR methods are also constantly further developed by the community. Both access to existing DSR methods and its further development are hindered today by the way we represent DSR methods. Most of the DSR methods are scattered in different papers or books. In order to foster accessibility and further development, we propose a harmonized representation of DSR process knowledge (as a core component of DSR methods) in an open repository. Applying DSR ourselves, we 1) identify meta-requirements for a DSR process modeling system 2) derive initial design principles 3) propose a meta-model 4) provide an instantiation of the meta-model in the form of an open repository, and 5) evaluate our design based on interviews with DSR researchers using the repository. We report from two DSR cycles, then discuss our findings and outline avenues for future research
Modeling 4.0: Conceptual Modeling in a Digital Era
Digitization provides entirely new affordances for our economies and societies. This leads to previously unseen design opportunities and complexities as systems and their boundaries are re-defined, creating a demand for appropriate methods to support design that caters to these new demands. Conceptual modeling is an established means for this, but it needs to be advanced to adequately depict the requirements of digitization. However, unlike the actual deployment of digital technologies in various industries, the domain of conceptual modeling itself has not yet undergone a comprehensive renewal in light of digitization. Therefore, inspired by the notion of Industry 4.0, an overarching concept for digital manufacturing, in this commentary paper, we propose Modeling 4.0 as the notion for conceptual modeling mechanisms in a digital environment. In total, 12 mechanisms of conceptual modeling are distinguished, providing ample guidance for academics and professionals interested in ensuring that modeling techniques and methods continue to fit contemporary and emerging requirements
An evaluation of the challenges of Multilingualism in Data Warehouse development
In this paper we discuss Business Intelligence and define what is meant by support for Multilingualism in a Business Intelligence reporting context. We identify support for Multilingualism as a challenging issue which has implications for data warehouse design and reporting performance. Data warehouses are a core component of most Business Intelligence systems and the star schema is the approach most widely used to develop data warehouses and dimensional Data Marts. We discuss the way in which Multilingualism can be supported in the Star Schema and identify that current approaches have serious limitations which include data redundancy and data manipulation, performance and maintenance issues. We propose a new approach to enable the optimal application of multilingualism in Business Intelligence. The proposed approach was found to produce satisfactory results when used in a proof-of-concept environment. Future work will include testing the approach in an enterprise environmen
