Energy storage systems and grid code requirements for large-scale renewables integration in insular grids
This thesis addresses the topic of energy storage systems supporting increased penetration of renewables in insular systems. An overview of energy storage management, forecasting tools and demand side solutions is carried out, comparing the strategic utilization of storage and other competing strategies. Particular emphasis is given to energy storage systems on islands, as a new contribution to earlier studies, addressing their particular requirements, the most appropriate technologies and existing operating projects throughout the world. Several real-world case studies are presented and discussed in detail. Lead-acid battery design parameters are assessed for energy storage applications on insular grids, comparing different battery models. The wind curtailment mitigation effect by means of energy storage resources is also explored. Grid code requirements for large-scale integration of renewables are discussed in an island context, as another new contribution to earlier studies. The current trends on grid code formulation, towards an improved integration of distributed renewable resources in island systems, are addressed. Finally, modeling and control strategies with energy storage systems are addressed. An innovative energy management technique to be used in the day-ahead scheduling of insular systems with Vanadium Redox Flow battery is presented.Esta tese aborda a temática dos sistemas de armazenamento de energia visando o aumento da penetração de energias renováveis em sistemas insulares. Uma visão geral é apresentada acerca da gestão do armazenamento de energia, ferramentas de previsão e soluções do lado da procura de energia, comparando a utilização estratégica do armazenamento e outras estratégias concorrentes. É dada ênfase aos sistemas de armazenamento de energia em ilhas, como uma nova contribuição no estado da arte, abordando as suas necessidades específicas, as tecnologias mais adequadas e os projetos existentes e em funcionamento a nível mundial. Vários casos de estudos reais são apresentados e discutidos em detalhe. Parâmetros de projeto de baterias de chumbo-ácido são avaliados para aplicações de armazenamento de energia em redes insulares, comparando diferentes modelos de baterias. O efeito de redução do potencial de desperdício de energia do vento, recorrendo ao armazenamento de energia, também é perscrutado. As especificidades subjacentes aos códigos de rede para a integração em larga escala de energias renováveis são discutidas em contexto insular, sendo outra nova contribuição no estado da arte. As tendências atuais na elaboração de códigos de rede, no sentido de uma melhor integração da geração distribuída renovável em sistemas insulares, são abordadas. Finalmente, é estudada a modelação e as estratégias de controlo com sistemas de armazenamento de energia. 3D-in-2D Displays for ATC.
This paper reports on the efforts and accomplishments
of the 3D-in-2D Displays for ATC project at the end of Year 1.
We describe the invention of 10 novel 3D/2D visualisations that
were mostly implemented in the Augmented Reality ARToolkit.
These prototype implementations of visualisation and interaction
elements can be viewed on the accompanying video. We have
identified six candidate design concepts which we will further
research and develop. These designs correspond with the early
feasibility studies stage of maturity as defined by the NASA
Technology Readiness Level framework. We developed the
Combination Display Framework from a review of the literature,
and used it for analysing display designs in terms of display
technique used and how they are combined. The insights we
gained from this framework then guided our inventions and the
human-centered innovation process we use to iteratively invent.
Our designs are based on an understanding of user work
practices. We also developed a simple ATC simulator that we
used for rapid experimentation and evaluation of design ideas.
We expect that if this project continues, the effort in Year 2 and 3
will be focus on maturing the concepts and employment in a
operational laboratory settings

Essays on the impact of information technology on identity
Depuis quelques années maintenant, les technologies de l'information (TI) ne sont plus l'apanage des spécialistes et des experts. De plus en plus, des acteurs de divers secteurs intègrent les TI pour accomplir leur travail. Seulement voilà, pour s'adapter à leur environnement, les individus sont appelés à développer des nouvelles habilités, instaurer des nouvelles pratiques ou reléguer d'autres au second plan. Auquel cas, l'identité de ces acteurs, c'est-à-dire la façon dont ils se définissent et se décrivent eu égard à leur travail pourrait en être potentiellement affectée. Dès lors, il n'est pas encore clair comment les individus s'adaptent aux défis que posent les TI à leur identité, ni comment ils s'efforcent à définir ou redéfinir leur soi en réponse aux changements, parfois substantiels, induits par les TI. La thèse constitue une étape pour combler ce vide. Son objectif est de développer une théorie qui explique comment les individus s'adaptent aux défis posés par les TI à leur identité. Nous avons donc défini quatre stratégies, à savoir : 1) agir sur la situation (acting on situation); 2) ajuster le sens de soi (adjusting the self); 3) pratiques cathartiques (cathartic practices), et 4) distanciation (distancing coping). Nous avons suggéré que ces quatre stratégies mènent à l'une des quatre types d'identité : 1) identité renforcée (reinforced identity) 2) identité redéfinie (redefined identity) 3) identité ambivalente (ambivalent identity) 4) et l'anti-identité (anti-identity). La théorie est validée par une étude de terrain menée auprès des professionnels de la santé, à savoir, des médecins et des infirmièr(e)s dont les pratiques cliniques ont connu des changements substantiels induits par des systèmes de dossiers patients électroniques. En somme, l'étude contribue à la littérature en offrant à point singulier pour examiner comment l'identité est construite dans le processus d'interaction avec les technologies de l'information qui, en retour, affectent certains comportements eu égard les TI tels que l'utilisation, l'appropriation et la résistance. La thèse contribue aussi au niveau pratique en offrant des outils singuliers aux gestionnaires, particulièrement du secteur de la santé, pour réussir l'introduction des systèmes de dossiers patients électroniques.\ud

A comprehensive review is given of worldwide satellite communication programs that range in time from the inception of satellite communications to mid-1974. Particular emphasis is placed on program results, including experiments conducted, communications system operational performance, and technology employed. The background for understanding these results is established through brief summaries of the program organization, system configuration, and satellite and ground terminal characteristics. Major consideration is given to the communications system aspects of each program, but general spacecraft technology and other experiments conducted as part of the same program are mentioned summarily

E-Governance: Strategy for Mitigating Non-Inclusion of Citizens in Policy Making in Nigeria
The Nigerian federation that currently has 36 states structure adopted the Weberian Public Administrative system
before now as an ideal way of running government, which was characterized with the traditional way of doing things without
recourse to the deployment of Information Communication Technology (ICT). Today e-governance is seen as a paradigm
shift from the previous way of governance. Research has shown that, the adoption and implementation of e-governance is
more likely to bring about effective service delivery, mitigate corruption and ultimately enhance citizens’ participation in
governmental affairs. However, it has been argued that infrastructure such as regular electricity power and access to the
Internet, in addition to a society with high rate of literacy level are required to effectively implement and realize the
potentials of e-governance for improved delivery of services. Due to the difficulties currently experienced, developing nations
need to adequately prepare for the implementation of e-governance on the platform of Information Communication
Technology (ICT). Hence, this study seeks to examine whether the adoption and implementation of e-governance in the
context of Nigeria would mitigate the hitherto non-inclusion of citizens in the formulation and implementation of
government policies aimed at enhanced development. To achieve the objective of the study, data were sourced and analyzed
majorly by examining government websites of 20 states in the Nigerian federation to ascertain if there are venues for citizens
to interact with government in the area of policy making and feedback on government actions, as a way of promoting
participatory governance. The study revealed that the adoption and implementation of e-governance in the country is yet to
fully take place. This is due to lack of infrastructure, low level of literacy rate and government inability to provide the
necessary infrastructure for e-governance to materialize. The paper therefore, recommends among others the need for the
Federal Government to involve a sound and clear policy on how to go about the adoption and implementation of egovernance
through deliberate effort at increasing budgetary allocation towards infrastructural development and mass
education of citizens
The Impact of e-Democracy in Political Stability of Nigeria
The history of the Nigerian electoral process has been hitherto characterized by violence stemming from disputes
in election outcomes. For instance, violence erupted across some states in Northern Nigeria when results indicated that a
candidate who was popular in that part of the country was losing the election leading to avoidable loss of lives. Beside, this
dispute in election outcome lingers for a long time in litigation at the electoral tribunals which distracts effective governance.
However, the increasing penetrating use of ICTs in Nigeria is evident in the electoral processes with consequent shift in the
behavior of actors in the democratic processes, thus changing the ways Nigerians react to election outcomes. This paper
examines the trend in the use ICT in the Nigerian political system and its impact on the stability of the polity. It assesses the
role of ICT in recent electoral processes and compares its impact on the outcome of the process in lieu of previous
experiences in the Nigeria. Furthermore, the paper also examines the challenges and risks of implementing e-Democracy in
Nigeria and its relationship to the economy in the light of the socio-economic situation of the country. The paper adopted
qualitative approach in data gathering and analysis. From the findings, the paper observed that e-democracy is largely
dependent on the level of ICT adoption, which is still at its lowest ebb in the country. It recognizes the challenges in the
provision of ICT infrastructure and argues that appropriate low-cost infrastructure applicable to the Nigerian condition can
be made available to implement e-democracy and thus arouse the interest of the populace in governance, increase the
number of voters, and enhance transparency, probity and accountability, and participation in governance as well as help
stabilize the nascent democrac

MEASUREMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT IN ADJUNCT INSTRUCTORS TEACHING WITHIN A MID-SOUTH COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM BASED ON HIRING ORIENTATION CHARACTERISTICS
The United States community college student population is a broad demographic that continues to grow. The result is a higher demand for classes and an increasing reliance of college administrators on temporary, part-time adjunct instructors. Temporary employees are found to exhibit a low organizational commitment (OC) to their employers. The social exchange theory and the concept of reciprocity served as the framework for studying OC of adjunct instructors in a mid-south community college system. A regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between three hiring orientation characteristics and OC, while controlling for years of teaching experience. Each variable was linearly associated with OC. A descriptive study was then employed to examine employment issues important to adjunct instructor commitment. Results demonstrated that adjunct instructors rated insufficient rates of pay, job insecurity, and a lack of respect as still significant in their perceived relationship with hiring institutions. Without making efforts to improve hiring orientations and other factors for adjunct instructors, hiring administrators risk losing their availability to other institutions or more satisfying work outside of higher education.
